They are parameter-free, widely applicable, and very effective in several domains. However, little has been done to interpret their results or to explain their behavior. In this paper, we take a step toward understanding compression distances by performing an experimental evaluation of the impact of several kinds of information distortion on compression-based text clustering. We show how progressively removing words in such a way that the complexity of a document is slowly reduced helps the compression-based text clustering and improves its accuracy. In fact, we show how the nondistorted text clustering can be improved by means of annealing text distortion. The experimental results shown in this paper are consistent using different data sets, and different compression algorithms belonging to the most important compression families: Lempel-Ziv, Statistical and Block-Sorting.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science under TIN2010-19872 and TIN2010-19607 projects

    High-ISO long-exposure image denoising based on quantitative blob characterization

    Blob detection and image denoising are fundamental, sometimes related tasks in computer vision. In this paper, we present a computational method to quantitatively measure blob characteristics using normalized unilateral second-order Gaussian kernels. This method suppresses non-blob structures while yielding a quantitative measurement of the position, prominence and scale of blobs, which can facilitate the tasks of blob reconstruction and blob reduction. Subsequently, we propose a denoising scheme to address high-ISO long-exposure noise, which sometimes spatially shows a blob appearance, employing a blob reduction procedure as a cheap preprocessing for conventional denoising methods. We apply the proposed denoising methods to real-world noisy images as well as standard images that are corrupted by real noise. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods over state-of-the-art denoising methods

    Shot boundary detection in MPEG videos using local and global indicators

    Shot boundary detection (SBD) plays important roles in many video applications. In this letter, we describe a novel method on SBD operating directly in the compressed domain. First, several local indicators are extracted from MPEG macroblocks, and AdaBoost is employed for feature selection and fusion. The selected features are then used in classifying candidate cuts into five sub-spaces via pre-filtering and rule-based decision making. Following that, global indicators of frame similarity between boundary frames of cut candidates are examined using phase correlation of dc images. Gradual transitions like fade, dissolve, and combined shot cuts are also identified.     Monitoring wild animal communities with arrays of motion sensitive camera traps

    Studying animal movement and distribution is of critical importance to addressing environmental challenges including invasive species, infectious diseases, climate and land-use change. Motion sensitive camera traps offer a visual sensor to record the presence of a broad range of species providing location -specific information on movement and behavior. Modern digital camera traps that record video present new analytical opportunities, but also new data management challenges. This paper describes our experience with a terrestrial animal monitoring system at Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Our camera network captured the spatio-temporal dynamics of terrestrial bird and mammal activity at the site - data relevant to immediate science questions, and long-term conservation issues. We believe that the experience gained and lessons learned during our year long deployment and testing of the camera traps as well as the developed solutions are applicable to broader sensor network applications and are valuable for the advancement of the sensor network research. We suggest that the continued development of these hardware, software, and analytical tools, in concert, offer an exciting sensor-network solution to monitoring of animal populations which could realistically scale over larger areas and time spans
