    This thesis is concerned with the link layer design of indoor (IrDA) and outdoor infrared links, as well as the performance of the higher layers of two major Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) technologies: IrDA and Bluetooth. Recent advancesin wireless technology have made it possible to put networking technology into small portable devices. During the past few years, WPAN technologies have been the subject of a tremendous growth both in research and development. Although many studies have been conducted on wireless links to address different issues on physical and link layers, wireless communications are still characterised by high error rates becauseof the frequently changing medium. On the other hand, performance studies of the higher layers are also very important. In this thesis, for the first time, a comprehensivestudy of the interactions betweenthe higher and the lower protocol layers of IrDA and Bluetooth has been carried out to improve the overall system performance. Mathematical models for the link layers are introduced for the infrared systems: infrared data association (IrDA) and free space optics (FSO). A model for the IrDA (indoor infrared) link layer is developed by considering the presence of bit errors. Based on this model, the effect of propagation delay on the link through put is investigated. An optimization study is also carried out to maximize the link throughput. FSO (outdoor infrared) links are often characterized by high speed and long link distance. A mathematical model for the FSO link layer is also developed. Significant improvement of the link throughput is achieved by optimizing the link parameters. Based on the link layer model, the performance of the IrDA higher layers (transport, session and application layers) is investigated. First, a mathematical model of TinyTP (transport protocol) is elaborated and subsequently verified by simulations. The effects of multiple connections and available buffer size are investigated. The throughput at the TinyTP level is optimized for different buffer sizes. Subsequently, the session layer, including Object Exchange (OBEX) and IrDA Burst (IrBurst) protocols, is studied and modelled. The derived mathematical model is verified by simulation results. A set of protocol parameters and hardware selection guidelines is proposed to optimize the overall system performance while also keeping the hardware requirementto a minimum. Finally, two rapidly developing IrDA applications, IrDA financial messaging(IrFM) and IrDA simple connection (IrSC), are studied. IrFM is investigated by comparison to other digital payment technologies, while the performance of IrSC is compared in two different technical approaches. In order to improve the throughput and minimize the transmission delay for the Bluetooth data applications, a systematic analysis is carried out for the Bluetooth Logical Link Control and Adaptation Layer Protocol (L2CAP). L2CAP is layered above the Bluetooth link layer (Baseband) and is essential to Bluetooth data applications. A simple and intuitive mathematical model is developed to derive simple equations for the L2CAP throughput and the average packet delay. The derived throughput equation, which is validated by simulations, takes into account bit errors as well as packet retry limits. Finally, a number of easy-to-implement performance enhancement schemes are proposed, including the optimum use of the protocol parameters

The platform embeds a real vehicle into SUMO, a microscopic road traffic simulation package.     Health monitoring is nowadays one of the hottest markets due to the increasing interest in prevention and treatment of physical problems. In this context the development of wearable, wireless, open-source, and nonintrusive sensing solutions is still an open problem. Indeed, most of the existing commercial architectures are closed and provide little flexibility. In this paper, an open hardware architecture for designing a modular wireless sensor node for health monitoring is proposed. By separating the connection and sensing functions in two separate boards, compliant with the IEEE1451 standard, we add plug and play capabilities to analog transducers, while granting at the same time a high level of customization. As an additional contribution of the work, we developed a cosimulation tool which simplifies the physical connection with the hardware devices and provides support for complex systems. Finally, a wireless body area network for fall detection and health monitoring, based on wireless node prototypes realized according to the proposed architecture, is presented as an application scenario

    A low-cost tracking system for running race applications based on bluetooth low energy technology

    Timing points used in running races and other competition events are generally based on radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology. Athletes’ times are calculated via passive RFID tags and reader kits. Specifically, the reader infrastructure needed is complex and requires the deployment of a mat or ramps which hide the receiver antennae under them. Moreover, with the employed tags, it is not possible to transmit additional and dynamic information such as pulse or oximetry monitoring, alarms, etc. In this paper we present a system based on two low complex schemes allowed in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE): the non-connectable undirected advertisement process and a modified version of scannable undirected advertisement process using the new capabilities present in Bluetooth 5. After fully describing the system architecture, which allows full real-time position monitoring of the runners using mobile phones on the organizer side and BLE sensors on the participants’ side, we derive the mobility patterns of runners and capacity requirements, which are determinant for evaluating the performance of the proposed system. They have been obtained from the analysis of the real data measured in the last Barcelona Marathon. By means of simulations, we demonstrate that, even under disadvantageous conditions (50% error ratio), both schemes perform reliably and are able to detect the 100% of the participants in all the cases. The cell coverage of the system needs to be adjusted when non-connectable process is considered. Nevertheless, through simulation and experimental, we show that the proposed scheme based on the new events available in Bluetooth 5 is clearly the best implementation alternative for all the cases, no matter the coverage area and the runner speed. The proposal widely exceeds the detection requirements of the real scenario, surpassing the measured peaks of 20 sensors per second incoming in the coverage area, moving at speeds that range from 1.5 m/s to 6.25 m/s. The designed real test-bed shows that the scheme is able to detect 72 sensors below 600 ms, fulfilling comfortably the requirements determined for the intended application. The main disadvantage of this system would be that the sensors are active, but we have proved that its consumption can be so low (9.5 µA) that, with a typical button cell, the sensor battery life would be over 10,000 h of use.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

In addition, routing in a multi-hop dynamic Bluetooth network, where a number of masters and bridges exist, sometimes creates technical hitches in a scatternet. It has been observed that frequent link disconnections and a new route construction consume more system resources that ultimately degrade the performance of the whole network. As, Bluetooth specification has defined piconet configuration, scatternet configuration has still not been standardized.     Towards the efficient use of LoRa for wireless sensor networks

    Since their inception in 1998 with the Smart Dust Project from University of Berkeley, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) had a tremendous impact on both science and society, influencing many (new) research fields, like Cyber-physical System (CPS), Machine to Machine (M2M), and Internet of Things (IoT). In over two decades, WSN researchers have delivered a wide-range of hardware, communication protocols, operating systems, and applications, to deal with the now classic problems of resourceconstrained devices, limited energy sources, and harsh communication environments. However, WSN research happened mostly on the same kind of hardware. With wireless communication and embedded hardware evolving, there are new opportunities to resolve the long standing issues of scaling, deploying, and maintaining a WSN. To this end, we explore in this work the most recent advances in low-power, longrange wireless communication, and the new challenges these new wireless communication techniques introduce. Specifically, we focus on the most promising such technology: LoRa. LoRa is a novel low-power, long-range communication technology, which promises a single-hop network with millions of sensor nodes. Using practical experiments, we evaluate the unique properties of LoRa, like orthogonal spreading factors, nondestructive concurrent transmissions, and carrier activity detection. Utilising these unique properties, we build a novel TDMA-style multi-hop Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol called LoRaBlink. Based on empirical results, we develop a communication model and simulator called LoRaSim to explore the scalability of a LoRa network. We conclude that, in its current deployment, LoRa cannot support the scale it is envisioned to operate at. One way to improve this scalability issue is Adaptive Data Rate (ADR). We develop two ADR protocols, Probing and Optimistic Probing, and compare them with the de facto standard ADR protocol used in the crowdsourced TTN LoRaWAN network. We demonstrate that our algorithms are much more responsive, energy efficient, and able to reach a more efficient configuration quicker, though reaching a suboptimal configuration for poor links, which is offset by the savings caused by the convergence speed. Overall, this work provides theoretical and empirical proofs that LoRa can tackle some of the long standing problems within WSN. We envision that future work, in particular on ADR and MAC protocols for LoRa and other low-power, long-range communication technologies, will help push these new communication technologies to main-stream status in WSNs
