    An Implantable Low Pressure, Low Drift, Dual BioPressure Sensor and In-Vivo Calibration Methods Thereof

    The human body’s intracranial pressure (ICP) is a critical component in sustaining healthy blood flow to the brain while allowing adequate volume for brain tissue within the rigid structures of the cranium. Disruptions in the body’s autoregulation of intracranial pressure are often caused by hemorrhage, tumors, edema, or excess cerebral spinal fluid resulting in treatments that are estimated to globally cost up to approximately five billion dollars annually. A critical element in the contemporary management of acute head injury, intracranial hemorrhage, stroke, or other conditions resulting in intracranial hypertension, is the real-time monitoring of ICP. Currently, such mainstream clinical monitoring can only take place short-term within an acute care hospital. The monitoring is prone to measurement drift and is comprised of externally tethered pressure sensors that are temporarily implanted into the brain, thus carrying a significant risk of infection. To date, reliable, low drift, completely internalized, long-term ICP monitoring devices remain elusive. The successful development of such a device would not only be safer and more reliable in the short-term but would expand the use of ICP monitoring for the management of chronic intracranial hypertension and enable further clinical research into these disorders. The research herein reviews the current challenges of existing ICP monitoring systems, develops a new novel sensing technology, and evaluates the same for potentially facilitating long-term implantable ICP sensing. Based upon the findings of this research, this dissertation proposes and evaluates a dual matched-die piezo-resistive strain sensing device, with a novel in-vivo calibration system and method thereof, for application to long-term implantable ICP sensing

    Polymeric Microsensors for Intraoperative Contact Pressure Measurement

    Biocompatible sensors have been demonstrated using traditional microfabrication techniques modified for polymer substrates and utilize only materials suitable for implantation or bodily contact. Sensor arrays for the measurement of the load condition of polyethylene spacers in the total knee arthroplasty (TKA) prosthesis have been developed. Arrays of capacitive sensors are used to determine the three-dimensional strain within the polyethylene prosthesis component. Data from these sensors can be used to give researchers a better understanding of component motion, loading, and wear phenomena for a large range of activities. This dissertation demonstrates both analytically and experimentally the fabrication of these sensor arrays using biocompatible polymer substrates and dielectrics while preserving industry-standard microfabrication processing for micron-level resolution. An array of sensors for real-time measurement of pressure profiles is the long-term goal of this research. A custom design using capacitive-based sensors is an excellent selection for such measurement, giving high spatial resolution across the sensing surface and high load resolution for pressures applied normal to that surface while operating at low power

    Inductive angular position sensors (IAPS) are widely used for high accuracy and low cost angular position sensing in harsh automotive environments, such as suspension height sensor and throttle body position sensor. These sensors ensure high resolution and long lifetime due to their contactless sensing mode and their simple structure. Furthermore, they are suitable for wider application areas. For instance, they can be miniaturized to fit into a compact packaging space, or be adopted to measure the relative angle of multiple rotating targets for the purposes of torque sensing. In this work, a detailed SIMULINK model of an IAPS is first proposed in order to study and characterize the sensor performance. The model is validated by finite element analysis and circuit simulation, which provides a powerful design tool for sensor performance analysis. The sensor error introduced by geometry imperfection is thoroughly investigated for two-phase and three-phase configurations, and a corresponding correction method to improve the accuracy is proposed. A design optimization method based on the response surface methodology is also developed and used in the sensor development. Three types of sensors are developed to demonstrate the inductive sensor technology. The first type is the miniaturized inductive sensor. To compensate for the weak signal strength and the reduced quality (Q) factor due to the scaling down effect, a resonant rotor is developed for this type of sensor. This sensor is fabricated by using the electrodeposition technique. The prototype shows an 8mm diameter sensor can function well at 1.5mm air gap. The second type is a steering torque sensor, which is designed to detect the relative torsional angle of a rotating torsional shaft. It demonstrates the mutual coupling of multiple inductive sensors. By selecting a proper layout and compensation algorithm, the torque sensor can achieve 0.1 degree accuracy. The third type is a passive inductive sensor, which is designed to reduce power consumption and electromagnetic emissions. The realization and excellent performance of these three types of sensors have shown the robustness of the inductive sensor technology and its potential applications. The research conducted in this dissertation is expected to improve understanding of the performance analysis of IAPS and provide useful guidelines for the design and performance optimization of inductive sensors

    Determining the Position and Orientation of In-body Medical Instruments Using Reactive Magnetic Field Mapping

    There has been a huge demand for localizing in-body medical instruments (IBMI), such as wireless capsule endoscope (WCE) and nasogastric tube (NGT). Some stud ies have been conducted to solve this issue over the last three decades. In these studies, they either used a permanent magnet (PM), a static current source (SCS), radio frequency (RF) fields or integration of two of these. The PM is a stable and reliable magnetic field source. However, due to the size restriction of the NGT and the WCE, only a small PM can be used. Subsequently, the small size issue causes low power delivery at the larger tracking distance. Also, the PM field is very susceptible to ambient noise, and the PM-based localization is not possible in ap plications requiring robotic actuation. Even though an SCS can be used to replace the permanent magnet, and thus the current level can be varied in relation to the dis tance for optimized power delivery, it requires a relatively high power to generate a higher strength magnetic field. Consequently, a more powerful and larger battery is needed to feed the circuit.Radio frequency field sources require high frequencies to achieve sufficient precision, but these frequencies undergo high attenuation in the body. Therefore, the low-frequency RF field is preferred 1 . In the near-field 2 , plane wave assumption of the far-field fails for localization methods since the waves in this region are spherical. Hence, the wave-front has to be formulated by both the range and the direction of arrival (DOA). The DOA requires the phase difference of neighbouring sensors to be calculated. However, if the operating wavelength is much larger than the distance between the source and the receiver, it is not feasible to compute the phase difference between the neigh bouring sensors. Thus, there are numerous algorithms in the literature to overcome these issues, such as MUSIC or ESPRIT which are either complicated or computa tionally expensive. In RF-based localization, generally the time of arrival (TA), the time differ ence of arrival (TDA), the angle of arrival (AOA) and the received signal strength (RSS) are widely used for localization. However, the TA and TDA require accu rate knowledge of field speed and good time synchronization. It is not possible to accurately know while travelling through the body tissues due to complexity of the tissues. The AOA is also impractical for intra-body applications owing to multiple reflections signal from the tissues, commonly known as the multipath effect. The RSS precision is dependent on good knowledge of power loss in complex body tis sues. Also, the RSS method requires accurate knowledge of the transmitted signal strength. However, the power of transmitted frequencies may vary due to the ca pacitive effect of human tissue on Resonant frequency of source, hence RSS-based techniques prove difficult in practice. Therefore, a novel method of mapping the magnetic field vector in the near field region is proposed. This magnetic field mapping (MFM) uses single-axis coils placed orthogonally with respect to a sensor plane (SP). These single-axis sensors pick up only the orthogonal component of the magnetic field, which varies as a function of the orientation of the source and distance to the source. Thus, using this information, the field strength captured by each sensor is mapped to its correspond ing position on the SP as pixels. Next, these field strengths with known positions are used to detect the location and orientation of the field source relative to the SP. MATLAB and CST Microwave simulation were conducted, and many laboratory experiments were performed, and we show that the novel technique not only over comes the issues faced in the methods mentioned above but also accomplishes an accurate source positioning with a precision of better than ± 0.5 cm in 3-D and orientation with a maximum error of ±5◦

    Wireless Telemetry System for Implantable Sensors

    Advanced testing of medical treatments involves experimentation on small laboratory animals, such as genetically modified mice. These subjects are used to help researchers develop medication and cures for humans. To understand the effects of the treatments, innovative telemetry systems are developed, that enable remote real-time cardiac monitoring. The latest research in the field of cardiac monitoring has revealed two major limitations with wireless implantable systems: a) the current size of implantable electronics limits the physical size of the system to larger subjects; and b) the systems only interface with one sensor type (e.g., pressure sensor only). This research focuses on the design of a wireless telemetry system architecture, intended to retrieve blood pressure and volume data. A physical prototype is created that is 2.475 cm3 and weights 4.01 g. This thesis will enable a path towards miniaturization, leading to the incorporation of a wireless system into small laboratory animals

    Piezoelectric energy harvesting from low frequency and random excitation using frequency up-conversion

    The field of energy harvesting comprises all methods to produce energy locally and from surrounding sources, e.g. solar illumination, thermal gradients, vibration, radio frequency, etc. The focus of this thesis is on inertial power generation from host motion, in particular for low frequency and random excitation sources such as the human body. Under such excitation, the kinetic energy available to be converted into electrical energy is small and conversion efficiency is of utmost importance. Broadband harvesting based on frequency tuning or on non-linear vibrations is a possible strategy to overcome this challenge. The technique of frequency up-conversion, where the low frequency excitation is converted to a higher frequency that is optimal for the operation of the transducer is especially promising. Regardless of the source excitation, energy is converted more efficiently. After a general introduction to the research area, two different prototypes based on this latter principle and using piezoelectric bending beams as transducers are presented, one linear design and one rotational. Especially for human motion, the advantages of rotational designs are discussed. Furthermore, magnetic coupling is used to prevent impact on the brittle piezoceramic material when actuating. A mathematical model, combining the magnetic interaction forces and the constitutive mechanical and electrical equations for the piezoelectric bending beam is introduced and the results are provided. Theoretical findings are supported by experimental measurements and the calculation model is validated. The outcome is the successful demonstration of a rotational energy harvester, tested on a custom made shaking set-up and in the real world when worn on the upper arm during running.Open Acces
