    Control of 7-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor drive post three failures

    The article is introducing a new control technique for the 7-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive to enhance its robustness against the failure of phases ‘a’ and ‘c’ in addition to the failure of the encoder occurring simultaneously. The article is firstly developing a new multi-dimension space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique as a part of the fault-tolerant control technique (FTC) to control the magnitudes and angles of the motor’s current after the failures of phases ‘a’ and ‘c’. Moreover, the paper is developing another FTC to obtain a sensorless operation of the 7-phase motor after the failure in the encoder while the phase ‘a’ and ‘c’ are faulted based on the tracking of the saturation saliency. Simulation results prove that the ripple in the speed post the three failures was maintained to be less than 10 rpm compared to 2 rpm when the 7-phase drive is running without faults. In addition to that, the results demonstrated that the motor responded to instant changes in speeds and loads with a dynamic response very close to that obtained when the 7-phase motor ran under healthy operating conditions

    Optimal Modeled Six-Phase Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation Method for Stator Voltage Harmonic Suppression

    Dual Y shift 30 six-phase motors are expected to be extensively applied in high-power yet energy-effective fields, and a harmonic-suppressing control strategy plays a vital role in extending their prominent features of low losses and ultra-quiet operation. Aiming at the suppression of harmonic voltages, this paper proposes a six-phase space vector pulse width modulation method based on an optimization model, namely OM-SVPWM. First, four adjacent large vectors are employed in each of 12 sectors on a fundamental sub-plane. Second, the optimization model is constructed to intelligently determine activation durations of the four vectors, where its objective function aims to minimize the synthesis result on a harmonic sub-plane, and its constraint condition is that the synthesis result on the fundamental sub-plane satisfies a reference vector. Finally, to meet the real-time requirement, optimum solutions are obtained by using general central path following algorithm (GCPFA). Simulation and experiment results prove that, the OM-SVPWM performs around 37% better than a state-of-the-art competitive SVPWM in terms of harmonics suppression, which promise the proposed OM-SVPWM conforms to the energy-effective direction in actual engineering applications.Peer reviewe

    Multidimensional two-level multiphase space vector PWM algorithm and its comparison with multifrequency space vector PWM method

    A multilevel multiphase space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) algorithm has been introduced recently, in which the reference is separated into an integer part and a fractional part. The fractional part is, in essence, a two-level multiphase space vector algorithm. This paper shows that, with appropriate adaptations, the fractional part of the general space vector multilevel multiphase PWM can be applied as a stand-alone PWM method in conjunction with two-level voltage-source converters with any number of phases. Simulation results of the five- and six-phase cases are shown, and the new algorithm is compared with another recent multifrequency SVPWM algorithm, which follows the standard approach of selecting the switching vectors and calculating their application times using planes. The experimental verification is provided using a five-phase two-motor series-connected induction motor drive, supplied from a custom-designed five-phase voltage-source inverter.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación | Ref.     Performance Analysis of a Four-Switch Three-Phase Grid-Side Converter with Modulation Simplification in a Doubly-Fed Induction Generator-Based Wind Turbine (DFIG-WT) with Different External Disturbances

    This paper investigates the performance of a fault-tolerant four-switch three-phase (FSTP) grid-side converter (GSC) in a doubly-fed induction generator-based wind turbine (DFIG-WT). The space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique is simplified and unified duty ratios are used for controlling the FSTP GSC. Steady DC-bus voltage, sinusoidal three-phase grid currents and unity power factor are obtained. In addition, the balance of capacitor voltages is accomplished based on the analysis of current flows at the midpoint of DC bus in different operational modes. Besides, external disturbances such as fluctuating wind speed and grid voltage sag are considered to test its fault-tolerant ability. Furthermore, the effects of fluctuating wind speed on the performance of DFIG-WT system are explained according to an approximate expression of the turbine torque. The performance of the proposed FSTP GSC is simulated in Matlab/Simulink 2016a based on a detailed 1.5 MW DFIG-WT Simulink model. Experiments are carried out on a 2 kW platform by using a discrete signal processor (DSP) TMS320F28335 controller to validate the reliability of DFIG-WT for the cases with step change of the stator active power and grid voltage sag, respectively

    Dear Colleagues, I am very happy to have this Special Issue of the journal Energies on the topic of Design and Control of Electrical Motor Drives published. Electrical motor drives are widely used in the industry, automation, transportation, and home appliances. Indeed, rolling mills, machine tools, high-speed trains, subway systems, elevators, electric vehicles, air conditioners, all depend on electrical motor drives.However, the production of effective and practical motors and drives requires flexibility in the regulation of current, torque, flux, acceleration, position, and speed. Without proper modeling, drive, and control, these motor drive systems cannot function effectively.To address these issues, we need to focus on the design, modeling, drive, and control of different types of motors, such as induction motors, permanent magnet synchronous motors, brushless DC motors, DC motors, synchronous reluctance motors, switched reluctance motors, flux-switching motors, linear motors, and step motors.Therefore, relevant research topics in this field of study include modeling electrical motor drives, both in transient and in steady-state, and designing control methods based on novel control strategies (e.g., PI controllers, fuzzy logic controllers, neural network controllers, predictive controllers, adaptive controllers, nonlinear controllers, etc.), with particular attention to transient responses, load disturbances, fault tolerance, and multi-motor drive techniques. This Special Issue include original contributions regarding recent developments and ideas in motor design, motor drive, and motor control. The topics include motor design, field-oriented control, torque control, reliability improvement, advanced controllers for motor drive systems, DSP-based sensorless motor drive systems, high-performance motor drive systems, high-efficiency motor drive systems, and practical applications of motor drive systems.     Developing a new SVPWM control strategy for open-winding brushless doubly fed reluctance generators

    In this paper, a new open-winding control strategy is proposed for a brushless doubly fed reluctance generator (BDFRG) used for stand-alone wind turbine or ship generators. The BDFRG is characterized with two windings on the stator: a power winding and a control winding. The control winding is fed with dual two-level three-phase converters, and a vector control scheme based on space vector pulsewidth modulation is designed. Compared with traditional three-level inverter systems, the dc-link voltage and the voltage rating of power devices in the proposed system are reduced by 50% while still greatly improving the reliability, redundancy, and fault tolerance of the proposed system by increasing the switching modes. Its performance is evaluated by simulation in MATLAB/Simulink and an experimental study on a 42-kW prototype machine

    Experimental Investigation of Decoupled Discontinuous PWM Strategies in Open-End Winding Induction Motor Supplied by a Common DC-link

This is the accepted manuscript version of an article which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1109/JESTPE.2023.3258799Currently, open-end winding induction motors fed by a dual inverter (OEWIM-DI) present an innovative approach to enhance the performance of modern electric drive systems, such as electrical vehicles and electric aircraft applications. However, the DI topology requires a proper switching control strategy to enable the OEWIM drive to fully achieve its performance. This work aims to investigate experimentally the impact of different decoupled discontinuous pulsewidth modulation (DDPWM) control strategies on the performance of the OEWIM-DI supplied by a common dc-link. The criteria performances adopted in this study are: 1) the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the current and voltage; 2) the zero sequence voltage (ZSV); 3) the common mode voltage (CMV); and 4) the DI losses. The various DDPWM control schemes for the 1.5-kW OEWIM-DI motor drive are implemented on a dSPACE 1104 board, and the results are compared with the popular and widely used space-vector PWM (SVPWM) strategy. From the results, it can be concluded that the optimized DDPWM technique gives the best performance. This technique has reduced the CMV by one level and reduces the losses by 50% while having the same THD and ZSV obtained with the SVPWM technique.Peer reviewe

    Multilevel multiphase space vector PWM algorithm

    In the last few years, interest in multiphase converter technology has increased due to the benefits of using more than three phases in drive applications. Besides, multilevel converter technology permits the achievement of high power ratings with voltage limited devices. Multilevel multiphase technology combines the benefits of both technologies, but new modulation techniques must be developed in order to take advantage of multilevel multiphase converters. In this paper, a novel space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) algorithm for multilevel multiphase voltage source converters is presented. This algorithm is the result of the two main contributions of this paper: the demonstration that a multilevel multiphase modulator can be realized from a two-level multiphase modulator, and the development of a new two-level multiphase SVPWM algorithm. The multiphase SVPWM algorithm presented in this paper can be applied to most multilevel topologies; it has low computational complexity and it is suitable for hardware implementations. Finally, the algorithm was implemented in a low-cost field-programmable gate array and it was tested in a laboratory with a real prototype using a five-level five-phase inverter.Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia | Ref.     Detection of faults in a scaled down doubly-fed induction generator using advanced signal processing techniques.

    The study ventures into the development of a micro-based doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) test rig for fault studies. The 5kW wound rotor induction machine (WRIM) that was used in the test rig was based on a scaled-down version of a 2.5MW doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). The micromachine has been customized to make provision for implementing stator inter-turn short-circuit faults (ITSCF), rotor ITSCF and static eccentricity (SE) faults in the laboratory environment. The micromachine has been assessed under the healthy and faulty states, both before and after incorporating a converter into the rotor circuit of the machine. In each scenario, the fault signatures have been characterised by analyzing the stator current, rotor current, and the DFIG controller signals using the motor current signature analysis (MCSA) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) analysis techniques to detect the dominant frequency components which are indicative of these faults. The purpose of the study is to evaluate and identify the most suitable combination of signals and techniques for the detection of each fault under steady-state and transient operating conditions. The analyses of the results presented in this study have indicated that characterizing the fault indicators independent of the converter system ensured clarity in the fault diagnosis process and enabled the development of a systematic fault diagnosis approach that can be applied to a controlled DFIG. It has been demonstrated that the occurrence of the ITSCFs and the SE fault in the micro-WRIM intensifies specific frequency components in the spectral plots of the stator current, rotor current, and the DFIG controller signals, which may then serve as the dominant fault indicators. These dominant components may be used as fault markers for classification and have been used for pattern recognition under the transient condition. In this case, the DWT and spectrogram plots effectively illustrated characteristic patterns of the dominant fault indicators, which were observed to evolve uniquely and more distinguishable in the rotor current signal compared to the stator current signal, before incorporating the converter in the rotor circuit. Therefore, by observing the trends portrayed in the decomposition bands and the spectrogram plots, it is deemed a reliable method of diagnosing and possibly quantifying the intensity of the faults in the machine. Once the power electronic converter was incorporated into the rotor circuit, the DFIG controller signals have been observed to be best suited for diagnosing faults in the micro-DFIG under the steady-state operating condition, as opposed to using the terminal stator or rotor current signals. The study also assessed the impact of undervoltage conditions at the point of common coupling (PCC) on the behaviour of the micro-DFIG. In this investigation, a significant rise in the faulted currents was observed for the undervoltage condition in comparison to the faulty cases under the rated grid voltage conditions. In this regard, it could be detrimental to the operation of the micro-DFIG, particularly the faulted phase windings, and the power electronic converter, should the currents exceed the rated values for extended periods
