    Translation of metaphors in environmental discourse : descriptive-contrastive analysis of English, Spanish and Korean

    Tesis inédita de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Facultad de Filología, leída el 12-01-2022Aunque la investigación sobre metáforas y traducción de metáforas se ha centrado principalmente en el lenguaje literario durante gran parte de la historia, existen otros ámbitos, como el del discurso ambiental, en el que la traducción de metáforas es el problema más importante que se le plantea al traductor profesional (Newmark, 1988). Si tenemos en cuenta que el discurso ambiental representa una de las preocupaciones educativas más acuciantes del mundo globalizado, hemos de pensar que los traductores juegan un papel esencial a la hora de trasladar las metáforas encontradas en el texto de origen al texto de destino; y por tanto hasta al público que es objeto del mencionado discurso, como son los lectores jóvenes. Esta tesis pretende examinar de manera comparativa y contrastiva las metáforas lingüísticas utilizadas en la revista juvenil de divulgación científica llamada Tunza que publica el Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente, a través de un corpus paralelo unidireccional y multilingüe de textos escritos. Los idiomas involucrados son el inglés, que actúa como lengua de origen, junto con el español y el coreano, seleccionadas como lenguas de destino...Although research on metaphor and metaphor translation has focused primarily onliterary language for much of its history, there are other areas, such as environmentaldiscourse, in which metaphor translation poses the most important particular problem even to skilled translators (Newmark, 1988). Environmental discourse represents one of the most pressing educational concerns in the globalized world in which translators play an essential role in transferring the metaphors of the source texts to the minds of young target readers.     Knowledge Expansion of a Statistical Machine Translation System using Morphological Resources

    Translation capability of a Phrase-Based Statistical Machine Translation (PBSMT) system mostly depends on parallel data and phrases that are not present in the training data are not correctly translated. This paper describes a method that efficiently expands the existing knowledge of a PBSMT system without adding more parallel data but using external morphological resources. A set of new phrase associations is added to translation and reordering models; each of them corresponds to a morphological variation of the source/target/both phrases of an existing association. New associations are generated using a string similarity score based on morphosyntactic information. We tested our approach on En-Fr and Fr-En translations and results showed improvements of the performance in terms of automatic scores (BLEU and Meteor) and reduction of out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words.     This volume contains the proceedings of the 1st Workshop on Computing News Storylines (CNewsStory 2015) held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics and the 7th International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing (ACL-IJCNLP 2015) at the China National Convention Center in Beijing, on July 31st 2015. Narratives are at the heart of information sharing. Ever since people began to share their experiences, they have connected them to form narratives. The study od storytelling and the field of literary theory called narratology have developed complex frameworks and models related to various aspects of narrative such as plots structures, narrative embeddings, characters’ perspectives, reader response, point of view, narrative voice, narrative goals, and many others. These notions from narratology have been applied mainly in Artificial Intelligence and to model formal semantic approaches to narratives (e.g. Plot Units developed by Lehnert (1981)). In recent years, computational narratology has qualified as an autonomous field of study and research. Narrative has been the focus of a number of workshops and conferences (AAAI Symposia, Interactive Storytelling Conference (ICIDS), Computational Models of Narrative). Furthermore, reference annotation schemes for narratives have been proposed (NarrativeML by Mani (2013)). The workshop aimed at bringing together researchers from different communities working on representing and extracting narrative structures in news, a text genre which is highly used in NLP but which has received little attention with respect to narrative structure, representation and analysis. Currently, advances in NLP technology have made it feasible to look beyond scenario-driven, atomic extraction of events from single documents and work towards extracting story structures from multiple documents, while these documents are published over time as news streams. Policy makers, NGOs, information specialists (such as journalists and librarians) and others are increasingly in need of tools that support them in finding salient stories in large amounts of information to more effectively implement policies, monitor actions of “big players” in the society and check facts. Their tasks often revolve around reconstructing cases either with respect to specific entities (e.g. person or organizations) or events (e.g. hurricane Katrina). Storylines represent explanatory schemas that enable us to make better selections of relevant information but also projections to the future.     BIOSMILE web search: a web application for annotating biomedical entities and relations

    BIOSMILE web search (BWS), a web-based NCBI-PubMed search application, which can analyze articles for selected biomedical verbs and give users relational information, such as subject, object, location, manner, time, etc. After receiving keyword query input, BWS retrieves matching PubMed abstracts and lists them along with snippets by order of relevancy to protein–protein interaction. Users can then select articles for further analysis, and BWS will find and mark up biomedical relations in the text. The analysis results can be viewed in the abstract text or in table form. To date, BWS has been field tested by over 30 biologists and questionnaires have shown that subjects are highly satisfied with its capabilities and usability.     Poster Session: no. 26P.40Specific language impairment (SLI) and dyslexia describe language-learning impairments that occur in the absence of a sensory, cognitive, or psychosocial impairment. SLI is primarily defined by an impairment in oral language, and dyslexia by a deficit in the reading of written words. SLI and dyslexia co-occur in school-age children learning English, with rates ranging from 17% to 75%. For children learning Chinese, SLI and dyslexia also co-occur. Wong et al. (2010) first reported on the presence of dyslexia in a clinical sample of 6- to 11-year-old school-age children with SLI.
