    Entropy production in the cyclic lattice Lotka-Volterra model

    The cyclic Lotka-Volterra model in a DD-dimensional regular lattice is considered. Its ``nucleus growth'' mode is analyzed under the scope of Tsallis' entropies Sq=(1−∑ipiq)/(q−1)S_q=(1-\sum_i p_i^q)/(q-1), q∈Rq\in \mathbb{R}. It is shown both numerically and by means of analytical considerations that a linear increase of entropy with time, meaning finite asymptotic entropy rate, is achieved for the entropic index qc=1−1/Dq_c=1-1/D. Although the lattice exhibits fractal patterns along its evolution, the characteristic value of qq can be interpreted in terms of very simple features of the dynamics.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Influence of Ibuprofen on Phospholipid Membranes

    Basic understanding of biological membranes is of paramount importance as these membranes comprise the very building blocks of life itself. Cells depend in their function on a range of properties of the membrane, which are important for the stability and function of the cell, information and nutrient transport, waste disposal and finally the admission of drugs into the cell and also the deflection of bacteria and viruses. We have investigated the influence of ibuprofen on the structure and dynamics of L-alpha-phosphatidylcholine (SoyPC) membranes by means of grazing incidence small-angle neutron scattering (GISANS), neutron reflectometry and grazing incidence neutron spin echo spectroscopy (GINSES). From the results of these experiments we were able to determine that ibuprofen induces a two-step structuring behavior in the SoyPC films, where the structure evolves from the purely lamellar phase for pure SoyPC over a superposition of two hexagonal phases to a purely hexago- nal phase at high concentrations. Additionally, introduction of ibuprofen stiffens the membranes. This behavior may be instrumental in explaining the toxic behavior of ibuprofen in long-term application.Comment: -Improved indexing in Fig. 4e) -changed concentrations to mol% -improved arguments, however conclusions stay unchange

    Characteristics of good computerized analysis software are suggested. These general remarks and an overview of representative software precede a more detailed discussion of load support system analysis program structure. Particular attention is directed at a recent cylindrical roller bearing analysis as an example of the available design tools. Selected software modules are then examined to reveal the detail inherent in contemporary analysis. This leads to a brief section on current design computation which seeks to suggest when and why computerized analysis is warranted. An example concludes the argument offered for such design methodology. Finally, remarks are made concerning needs for model development to address effects which are now considered to be secondary but are anticipated to emerge to primary status in the near future

    Boundary layer analysis of a Centaur standard shroud

    An analytical boundary layer investigation was carried out in conjunction with an experimental wind tunnel test to determine the discharge characteristics of the Centaur shroud ascent vent system on the Titan/Centaur launch vehicle. This involved estimating the effect of the local boundary layers on the vent discharge for vehicle Mach numbers ranging from 0.8 to 1.56. The growth of the boundary layer along the vehicle was influenced by the interaction with flanges protruding into the flow and by the longitudinal corrugations in the vehicle surface. The effects of the flange and corrugations were treated by approximate techniques. In addition, boundary layer calculations were made for a 3 percent model of the launch vehicle compared with experimental results

    Photobase Generator Enabled Pitch Division: A Progress Report

    Pitch division lithography (PDL) with a photobase generator (PBG) allows printing of grating images with twice the pitch of a mask. The proof-of-concept has been published in the previous paper[1, 2] and demonstrated by others[1]. Forty five nm half-pitch (HP) patterns were produced using a 90nm HP mask, but the image had line edge roughness (LER) that does not meet requirements. Efforts have been made to understand and improve the LER in this process. Challenges were summarized toward low LER and good performing pitch division. Simulations and analysis showed the necessity for an optical image that is uniform in the z direction in order for pitch division to be successful. Two-stage PBGs were designed for enhancement of resist chemical contrast. New pitch division resists with polymer-bound PAGs and PBGs, and various PBGs were tested.
