    Vertical relationships between health insurers and healthcare providers

    The current institutional reforms in the Dutch healthcare sector may increase the extent of vertical relations (such as vertical contracts and vertical integration) between insurers and healthcare providers. Vertical relations may have both welfare increasing and welfare reducing effects. In this study, we focus on the latter, in particular on anticompetitive foreclosure. We distinguish three possible mechanisms that may lead to anticompetitive foreclosure, called respectively 'exclusivity', 'sabotage', and the 'waterbed effect'. We discuss under which conditions they come into play and which policy measures can prevent them.

    Optimal Order Policy for Deteriorating Items in Response to Temporary Price Discount Linked to Order Quantity

    [[abstract]]This paper investigates the possible effects of a temporary price discount offered by a supplier on a retailer's replenishment policy for deteriorating items, whereby the price discount rate depends on the order quantity. The purpose of this study is to develop a decision process for retailers to assist in determining whether to adopt a regular or special order policy. Furthermore, the optimal quantity of a special order policy for a selected case is determined by maximizing the total cost saving between special and regular orders for the duration of the depletion time. This research establishes an algorithm to determine the optimal solution and utilizes several numerical examples to illustrate the theoretical results and subsequently conducts a sensitivity analysis of the optimal solution with respect to the main parameters. Finally, the results reveal that (1) the optimal special order quantity is determined by trading off the benefits of the price discount against the additional holding cost, (2) the retailer benefits in terms of total cost saving if the remnant inventory is as low as possible when adopting a special order policy, (3) for the retailer it is preferable to adopt the special order policy if the unit purchase cost, market demand rate and/or ordering cost increase, and (4) the retailer will order a lower quantity and the total cost saving will decrease when either the holding cost rate or deterioration rate is high.     Fast Moving Consumer Goods: Competitive Conditions and Policies

    Fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs) constitute a large part of consumers' budget in all countries. The retail sector for FMCGs in Turkey is in the process of a drastic transformation. New, "modern" retail formats, like chain stores and hyper/supermarkets, have rapidly diffused in almost all major urban areas, and increased their market share at the expense of traditional formats (grocery shops, green groceries, etc.) in the last couple of decades. This rapid transformation has raised concerns about competitive conditions in the sector. This study is aimed at to shed light on competitive conditions prevailing in the FMCGs retail trade sector in Turkey. We analyze how the structure of the market is being transformed in recent years by new retail formats.     Revenue Management and Demand Fulfillment: Matching Applications, Models, and Software

    Recent years have seen great successes of revenue management, notably in the airline, hotel, and car rental business. Currently, an increasing number of industries, including manufacturers and retailers, are exploring ways to adopt similar concepts. Software companies are taking an active role in promoting the broadening range of applications. Also technological advances, including smart shelves and radio frequency identification (RFID), are removing many of the barriers to extended revenue management. The rapid developments in Supply Chain Planning and Revenue Management software solutions, scientific models, and industry applications have created a complex picture, which appears not yet to be well understood. It is not evident which scientific models fit which industry applications and which aspects are still missing. The relation between available software solutions and applications as well as scientific models appears equally unclear. The goal of this paper is to help overcome this confusion. To this end, we structure and review three dimensions, namely applications, models, and software. Subsequently, we relate these dimensions to each other and highlight commonalities and discrepancies.     Static efficiency in Dutch supermarket chain

    In this study, we analyse changes in market power in the Dutch supermarket chain and discuss the effects on welfare. The supermarket chain includes consumers, supermarkets, buyer groups and food manufactures. We look at the theoretical background of market power. �Special attention has been paid to recent theories of buyer power of retailers in the vertical chain. Theory suggests that supermarkets can enhance their buyer power by, for instance, using own private brands as an outside option in bargaining with manufacturers. Using firm-level data, indicators reveal that profit margins of both supermarkets and of manufacturers have declined between 1993 and 2005. Hence, competition on these markets seems to have become tougher and mark-ups lower over time. Furthermore, we find no significant empirical indications that supermarkets were able to use their buyer power to shift profits from manufacturers to supermarkets after 1993. Finally, all else equal, in terms of welfare consumers have benefited from fiercer competition in terms of lower prices.

    Complementarities, Below-Cost Pricing, and Welfare Losses

    We analyze below-cost pricing in retail markets and examine its impact on social welfare as well as on suppliers' incentives to invest in quality. Considering negotiations about a linear wholesale price between the retailer and her suppliers, we find that below-cost pricing aggravates the double marginalization problem and causes welfare losses compared to a regime where below-cost pricing is banned. Furthermore, suppliers have stronger incentives to invest in high quality products if a ban of below-cost pricing is enforced.Complementarities, Retailing, Below-Cost Pricing
