    SNR degradation in GNSS-R measurements under the effects of radio-frequency interference

The spectral separation coefficient (SSC) is the standard figure of merit to evaluate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation due to the RFI. However, an in-depth assessment in the field of GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) has not been performed yet, and particularly, about which is the influence of the RFI on the so-called delay-Doppler map (DDM). This paper develops a model that evaluates the contribution of intra-/inter-GNSS and external RFI effects to the degradation of the SNR in the DDM for both conventional and interferometric GNSS-R techniques. Moreover, a generalized SSC is defined to account for the effects of nonstationary RFI signals. The results show that highly directive antennas are necessary to avoid interference from other GNSS satellites, whereas mitigation techniques are essential to keep GNSS-R instruments working under external RFI degradation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Sensitivity of GNSS-R spaceborne observations to soil moisture and vegetation

    Global navigation satellite systems-reflectometry (GNSS-R) is an emerging remote sensing technique that makes use of navigation signals as signals of opportunity in a multistatic radar configuration, with as many transmitters as navigation satellites are in view. GNSS-R sensitivity to soil moisture has already been proven from ground-based and airborne experiments, but studies using space-borne data are still preliminary due to the limited amount of data, collocation, footprint heterogeneity, etc. This study presents a sensitivity study of TechDemoSat-1 GNSS-R data to soil moisture over different types of surfaces (i.e., vegetation covers) and for a wide range of soil moisture and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values. Despite the scattering in the data, which can be largely attributed to the delay-Doppler maps peak variance, the temporal and spatial (footprint size) collocation mismatch with the SMOS soil moisture, and MODIS NDVI vegetation data, and land use data, experimental results for low NDVI values show a large sensitivity to soil moisture and a relatively good Pearson correlation coefficient. As the vegetation cover increases (NDVI increases) the reflectivity, the sensitivity to soil moisture and the Pearson correlation coefficient decreases, but it is still significant.Postprint (author's final draft

    Altimetric performance of Global Navigation Satellite System - Reflectometry (GNSS-R) instruments depends on receiver’s bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The altimetric delay is usually computed from the time difference between the peak of the direct signal waveform and the maximum of the derivative of the reflected signal waveform. Dual-frequency data gathered by the airborne Microwave Interferometric Reflectometer (MIR) in the Bass Strait, between Australia and Tasmania, suggest that this approach is only valid for flat surfaces and large bandwidth receivers.     Remote Sensing in Land Applications by Using GNSS-Reflectometry

    Global navigation satellite system-reflectometry (GNSS-R) as an efficient tool for remote sensing has gained increasing interests in the last two decades, due to its unique characteristics. It uses GNSS signals as sources of opportunity, providing precise, continuous, all-weather, and 24 hours’ detections, which play a key role in many land applications. The fundamental theoretical part of GNSS-R technique is examined at first. Then, GNSS-R methodologies applied in the soil moisture content, vegetation biomass sensing, and altimetry applications are also detailed. One retrieval method uses only RH (right-hand) reflected data. Another retrieval method for soil moisture content (SMC) aimed to calibrate the measurement by using water reflections, based on the bistatic equations with LH (left-hand) reflected and RH direct signals. The other method for SMC retrieval is related to the polarimetric ratio (PR), the ratio of LH/RH reflected signals can reveal the fluctuations of the SMC. Another vital parameter vegetation biomass was observed by using the variation of reflectivity of the LH and RH reflected components. Finally, the C/A code method was used for exploring the possibility to the altimetry estimation. The features of GNSS-R technique made it a promising remote sensing technique in hydrology, climatology carbon cycles, and other potential applications

    Estimation of Significant Wave Height using the features of cygnss Delay Doppler Map

    Significant Wave Height (SWH) is a key parameter to characterize waves, which is typically used in sea state monitoring such as wave forecast to ensure ocean navigation safety. Satellite radar altimeter is probably the primary tool to obtain SWH information. However, it cannot be used for large-scale sea state monitoring unless many of theses satellites are deployed. In this article, we aim to study the potential of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) in SWH measurement based on spaceborne Delay-Doppler Maps (DDMs) data. First, 3 observables (i.e., Delay-Doppler Map Average (DDMA), leading edge slope (LES) of normalized integrated delay waveform (NIDW) (LES-NIDW), and trailing edge slope (TES) of NIDW (TES-NIDW) derived from the DDMs are introduced for SWH estimation. Then, an empirical SWH retrieval model is proposed based on three observables. Subsequently, ERA5 SWH is used as reference data to verify the performance of the proposed model. The experimental results show that the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Correlation Coefficient (CC) estimated by SWH of the three observables are better than 0.54 m and 0.88 m, respectively. Among them, the estimation performance based on DDMA observable is the best, with RMSE and CC of 0.49 m and 0.89 m.     Advanced GNSS-R instruments for altimetric and scatterometric applications

    This work is the result of more than eight years during a bachelor thesis, a master thesis, and the Ph.D. thesis dedicated to the development of the Microwave Interferometric Reflectometer (MIR) instrument. It summarizes all the knowledge acquired during this time, and describes the MIR instrument as detailed as possible. MIR is a Global Navigation Satellite System - Reflectometer (GNSS-R), that is, an instrument that uses Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals scattered on the Earth's surface to retrieve geophysical parameters. These signals are received below the noise level, but since they have been spread in the frequency domain using spread-spectrum techniques, and in particular using the so-called Pseudo Random Noise (PRN) codes, it is still possible to retrieve them because of the large correlation gain achieved. In GNSS-R, two main techniques are used for this purpose: the conventional technique cGNSS-R and the interferometric one iGNSS-R, each with its pros and cons. In the former technique, the reflected signal is cross-correlated against a locally generated clean-replica of the transmitted signal. In the latter technique the reflected signal is cross-correlated with the direct one. Nowadays multiple GNSS systems coexist, transmitting narrow and wide, open and private signals. A comparison between systems, signals, and techniques in fair conditions is necessary. The MIR instrument has been designed as an airborne instrument for that purpose: the instrument has two arrays, an up-looking one, and a down-looking one, each with 19 dual-band antennas in a hexagonal distribution. The instrument is able to form 2 beams at each frequency band (L1/E1, and L5/E5A), which are pointing continuously to the desired satellites taking into account their position, as well as the instrument's position and attitude. The data is sampled and stored for later post-processing. Last but not least, MIR is auto-calibrated using similar signals to the ones transmitted by the GNSS satellites. During the instrument development, the Distance Measurement Equipment/TACtical Air Navigation (DME/TACAN) signals from the Barcelona airport threatened to disrupt the interferometric technique. These signals were also studied, and it was concluded that the use of a mitigation systems were as strongly recommended. The interferometric technique was also affected by the unwanted contribution of other satellites. The impact of these contributions was studied using real data gathered during this Ph.D. thesis. During these 8 years, the instrument was designed, built, tested, and calibrated. A field campaign was carried out in Australia between May 2018 and June 2018 to determine the instrument's accuracy in sensing soil moisture and sea altimetry. This work describes each of these steps in detail and aims to be helpful for those who decide to continue the legacy of this instrument.Este trabajo es el resultado de más de 8 años de doctorado dedicados al desarrollo del instrumento Microwave Interferometric Reflectometer (MIR). Esta tesis resume todo el conocimiento adquirido durante este tiempo, y describe el MIR lo más detalladamente posible. El MIR es un Reflectómetro de señales de Sistemas Globales de Navegación por Satélite (GNSS-R), es decir, es un instrumento que usa señales de GNSS reflejadas en la superficie de la tierra para obtener parámetros geofísicos. Estas señales son recibidas bajo el nivel de ruido, pero dado que han sido ensanchadas en el dominio frecuencial usando técnicas de espectro ensanchado, y en particular usando códigos Pseudo Random Noise (PRN), es todavía posible recibirlas debido a la elevada ganancia de correlación. En GNSS-R existen dos técnicas para este propósito: la convencional (cGNSS-R), y la interferométrica (iGNSS-R), cada una con sus pros y sus contras. En la primera se calcula la correlación cruzada de la señal reflejada y de una réplica generada del código transmitido. En la segunda técnica se calcula la correlación cruzada de la señal reflejada y de la señal directa. Hoy en día muchos sistemas GNSS coexisten, transmitiendo señales de distintos anchos de banda, algunas públicas y otras privadas. Una comparación entre sistemas, señales, y técnicas en condiciones justas es necesaria. El MIR es un instrumento aerotransportado diseñado como para ese propósito: el instrumento tiene dos arrays de antenas, uno apuntando al cielo, y otro apuntando al suelo, cada uno con 19 antenas doble banda en una distribución hexagonal. El instrumento puede formar 2 haces en cada banda frecuencial (L1/E1 y L5/E5A) que apuntan continuamente a los satélites deseados teniendo en cuenta su posición, y la posición y actitud del instrumento. Los datos son guardados para ser procesados posteriormente. Por último pero no menos importante, el MIR se calibra usando señales similares a las transmitidas por los satélites de GNSS. Durante el desarrollo del instrumento, señales del sistema Distance Measuremt Equi Distance Measurement Equipment/TACtical Air Navigation (DME/TACAN) del aeropuerto de Barcelona mostraron ser una amenaza para la técnica interferométrica. Estas señales fueron estudiadas y se concluyó que era encarecidamente recomendado el uso de sistemas de mitigación de interferencias. La técnica interferométrica también se ve afectada por las contribuciones no deseadas de otros satélites, llamado cross-talk. El impacto del cross-talk fue estudiado usando datos reales tomados durante esta tesis doctoral. A lo largo de estos 8 años el instrumento ha sido diseñado, construido, testeado y calibrado. Una campaña de medidas fue llevada a cabo en Australia entre Mayo de 2018 y Junio de 2018 para determinar la capacidad del instrumento para estimar la humedad del terreno y la altura del mar.     GNSS Reflectometry for land surface monitoring and buried object detection

    Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is attracting growing interest nowadays for several remote sensing applications. As a bistatic radar, the transmitter and the receiver are not co-located and in the special case of GNSS-R, the GNSS satellites are acting as transmitters and the receiver can be mounted either in a static position or onboard a aircraft or low orbit satellite. Various information about the surface from where the GNSS signals are reflected or scattered can be extracted by means of reflected signal strength, code delay, carrier phase delay, interference with direct GNSS signals and so on. Possible applications cover soil moisture retrieval, ice topography and thickness detection, snow depth estimation, vegetation coverage, sea state monitoring such as sea wind and surface roughness, sea salinity… In this work, soil moisture retrieval was mostly focused on. Hardware including antennas and receivers was studied and designed. Our first strategy of soil moisture retrieval is to apply a single Left Hand Circular Polarization (LHCP) antenna for reflected signal reception. Therefore multiple types of antennas such as the helix antenna, the patch antenna and several commercial antennas were designed, simulated or tested in the anechoic chamber. Two receiver solutions were used in our group and both of them apply the SiGe GPS frontend. The first solution is a PC based one: the collection and store of the raw incoming reflected GPS signals were done by the NGrab software (designed by NAVSAS Group of Politecnico di Torino) installed in a standard PC. The other solution was developed in our group and it is operated by a single Hackberry board, which consists of power supply, storage subsystem and customized Linux Debian operating system. The light weight and small size enable this compact receiver to perform flight measurement onboard UAVs. Both of the above mentioned receivers only store raw sampled data and no real time signal processing is performed on board. Post processing is done by Matlab program which makes correlations in both time and frequency domain with incoming signals using the local generated GPS C/A code replica. The so-called Delay Doppler Map (DDM) is therefore generated through this correlation. Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) can be calculated through Delay Waveform (DW) which is extracted from DDM at the Doppler frequency where the correlation peak exists. Received signal power can be obtained knowing the noise power which is given in a standard equation. In order to better plan a static measurement and to georeference specular points on the surface, programs for georeferencing specular points on either Google Maps or an x-y plane centered at the receiver position were developed. Fly dynamics in terms of roll, pitch and yaw influencing the antenna gain due to the variation of incident angles were also studied in order to compensate the gain to the received signal. Two soil moisture retrieval algorithms were derived corresponding to two receiving schemes. The first one is for the receiving of only LHCP reflected signals. In this case, the surface is assumed to be perfectly smooth and the received signal is seen to consist of only coherent component caused by specular reflection. Dielectric constant can be retrieved from the processed SNR. Two measurement campaigns were carried out using this single LHCP system. The first campaign is a flight measurement overflown a big portion of rice fields when most of the fields were flooded. It was a test measurement on the SNR sensitivity to water/no-water surfaces and an attempt of dielectric constant retrieval was also performed. SNR showed good sensitivity to the surface water content and dielectric constant was also checked to be reasonable. The second campaign is in static positions and it includes two experiments. This campaign initially aimed at testing the sensitivity of the compact receiver to different surface moisture. Results of both SNR and retrieved dielectric constant showed to be coherent with the surface moisture changes. The other retrieval algorithm is for the receiving of both LHCP and RHCP reflected signals concurrently. The cross polarization power ratio (LHCP/RHCP) is believed to be independent of surface roughness by several previous studies and this idea was also verified during the deriving process for either specular reflection case (only coherent component) or diffuse scattering condition (incoherent component). For diffuse scattering, three well known models were applied which are the Kirchhoff Approximation in stationary-phase approximation (Kirchhoff Geometrical Optics, KGO), Kirchhoff Approximation in Physical Optics Approximation (KPO) and Small Perturbation Method (SPM). These three models cover different roughness surfaces from very rough (KGO) to slightly rough surfaces (SPM). All the derived results of cross polarization ratio for the three models were verified to be independent of surface properties and depend on only dielectric constant of soil and incident angle. A new application of GNSS-R technique for the possibility of detection of buried objects was firstly investigated by our group. It has the potential use for man-made mines detection in the military field. Two measurement campaigns were carried out and the variation of the SNR level due to the presence of a metallic object was investigated. The first measurement campaign was performed in a static condition on a sandy terrain to check the functionality of the system. And the presence of the metallic object was detected also in the case of wet terrain. In the second measurement campaign, the antenna was moving along a given path and the possibility of detecting the object dimensions was highlighted. The results show the possibility of adopting this technique on board a remotely controlled UAV for metal object and even its dimension detection. A measurement of snow depth attempting to relate it to reflected LHCP SNR is briefly presented and discussed in Chapter 7

    The GRSS standard for GNSS-reflectometry

    In February 2019 a Project Authorization Request was approved by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards Association with the title “Standard for Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) Data and Metadata Content”. A Working Group has been assembled to draft this standard with the purpose of unifying and documenting GNSS-R measurements, calibration procedures, and product level definitions. The Working Group (http://www.grss-ieee.org/community/technical-committees/standards-or-earth-observations/) includes members, collaborators, and contributors from academia, international space agencies, and private industry. In a recent face-to-face meeting held during the ARSI+KEO 2019 Conference, the need was recognized to develop a standard with a wide range of operations, providing procedure guidelines independently of constraints imposed by current limitations on geophysical parameters retrieval algorithms.     Refletometria GNSS para medição do nível da água : melhoria da resolução temporal com uma matriz vertical de sensores

    O Brasil é um país com grande vulnerabilidade à elevação do nível médio do mar e eventos extremos como ressacas . Essa situação é agravada pela pobre distribuição geográfica dos marégrafos com longos períodos de observação e com controle vertical via nivelamento. Os métodos de medição altimétrica via refletometria por GNSS ( Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry – GNSS - R ) surgiram como uma opção promissora para monitoramento do nível do mar . Em certas aplicações de GNSS - R, é possível emprega r receptores GNSS comerciais, utilizando a razão sinal - ruído ( signal - to - noise ratio – SNR ), que é uma observável proporcional à potência da recepção GNSS. Uma das maiores fraquezas da maregrafia via GNSS - R é a baixa resolução temporal e a necessidade de ob servações longas, em média levando em torno de 1 hora, para cada estimativa altimétrica. Com objetivo de melhorar a resolução temporal da medida altimétrica via GNSS - R de forma automatizada, este estudo propõe a adição de movimento vertical mecânico de fre quência na ordem de 1 Hz à antena. A nova função do SNR, alterada pelo movimento mecânico, pode ser ajustada em intervalos de tempo na ordem do período da oscilação da antena. Para realização de prova de conceito e avaliação da performance desta metodologia , f oram realizados dois experimentos de campo . No primeiro experimento foi possível recuperar alturas do solo em intervalo de observação de 5 minutos de duração, apresentando erro na ordem de 10 cm . Já no segundo experimento, com 6 horas de dura ção e nível d’água como alvo , foi possível recuperar altura instantânea e avaliar seu comportamento ao longo do tempo . Analisando os resultados, foi notado que a altura instantânea apresentou uma oscilação em volta de sua média. Embora este comportamento t enha degradado seu valor em curtos intervalos de tempo , a o extrair s ua média , em intervalos que continham ciclos completos desta oscilação , foi possível recuperar alturas confiáveis, apresentando erro na ordem de 7 cm . Também foram realizadas simulações com o objetivo de investigar as limitações fundamentais da técnica proposta e prever o comportamento esperado do dispositivo nas condições dos experimentos. Conclui - se que o método proposto possibilita o aumento da resolução temporal do monitora mento de altura de superfície d’água via GNSS - R. Com este aumento de resolução é possível acompanhar componentes de maré mais variáveis, como a maré meteorológica.Brazil is a country with great vulnerability to sea level rise and extreme events such as storms . This situation is aggravated by the poor geographic distribution of the tide gauges with long observation periods and with vertical control via levelling. The sea level measurement me thods via Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS - R) have emerged as a promising option for sea level monitoring . In certain GNSS - R applications, it is possible to employ commercial GNSS receivers, using the signal - to - noise ratio (SNR), whic h is an observable proportional to the power of GNSS reception. One of the biggest weaknesses of GNSS - R maregraphy is the low temporal resolution and the need for long observations, on average taking around 1 hour, for each altimetric estimate. In order to improve the temporal resolution of the altimetric measurement via GNSS - R in an automated way, this study proposes the addition of mechanical vertical movement of frequency in the order of 1 Hz to the antenna. The new SNR function, altered by mechanical mo vement, can be adjusted in time intervals in the order of the period of antenna oscillation. To carry out a proof of concept and performance evaluation of this methodology, two field experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, it was possible to recover ground height within an observation interval of 5 minutes, with an error of around 10 cm. In the second experiment, with 6 hours of duration and water level as the target, it was possible to recover instantaneous height and evaluate its behavior o ver time. By a nalyzing its results, it was noticed that the instantaneous height oscillated around its mean value . Although this behavior has degraded its value in short time intervals, when extracting its average, in intervals that contained complete cycl es of this oscillation, it was possible to obtain reliable height values , within 7 cm of error . After carrying out the experiments, it was concluded that the proposed method enables the increase in the temporal resolution of the monitoring of water surface height via GNSS - R. With this resolution increase it is possible to track more tidal components compared to GNSS - R with static sensor
