    Medical image enhancement

    Get PDF
Each image acquired from a medical imaging system is often part of a two-dimensional (2-D) image set whose total presents a three-dimensional (3-D) object for diagnosis. Unfortunately, sometimes these images are of poor quality. These distortions cause an inadequate object-of-interest presentation, which can result in inaccurate image analysis. Blurring is considered a serious problem. Therefore, “deblurring” an image to obtain better quality is an important issue in medical image processing. In our research, the image is initially decomposed. Contrast improvement is achieved by modifying the coefficients obtained from the decomposed image. Small coefficient values represent subtle details and are amplified to improve the visibility of the corresponding details. The stronger image density variations make a major contribution to the overall dynamic range, and have large coefficient values. These values can be reduced without much information loss

Peer coaching: To what extent can it support the development of professional attributes required to be a teacher?

    Get PDF
Students on a science PGCE course were introduced to peer coaching. This article describes the structures developed to enhance student teachers’ professional attributes and then reports the results. The students were given questionnaires to ascertain to what extent they felt they had developed their professional attributes as a result of being involved in peer coaching. The questionnaire design provided both qualitative and quantitative data. The evidence indicates that the peer coaching procedures had a positive impact on student teachers’ professional development. Data was analysed and has been used to draw conclusions to inform peer coaching in an education setting

    Selected Works in Bioinformatics

This book consists of nine chapters covering a variety of bioinformatics subjects, ranging from database resources for protein allergens, unravelling genetic determinants of complex disorders, characterization and prediction of regulatory motifs, computational methods for identifying the best classifiers and key disease genes in large-scale transcriptomic and proteomic experiments, functional characterization of inherently unfolded proteins/regions, protein interaction networks and flexible protein-protein docking. The computational algorithms are in general presented in a way that is accessible to advanced undergraduate students, graduate students and researchers in molecular biology and genetics. The book should also serve as stepping stones for mathematicians, biostatisticians, and computational scientists to cross their academic boundaries into the dynamic and ever-expanding field of bioinformatics

Provedený kvant i tat ivní výzkum je doplněn úvahou překračuj ící pozi t ivi st ické paradigma a směřuj ící k paradigmatu interpretat ivnímu (konst rukt ivist ickému) ; v rámci této úvahy je pak podán náčrt problémových okruhů, jej ichž výzkum by mohl přispět k hlubšímu poznání problému v práci sledovaného (k problému t lumočení modal i ty) .The thesis aims to di scover any possible relat ionships between the capaci ty of working memory and the abi l i ty to interpret features of modal i ty. Based on this aim, the basic concepts determining the approach to the above quest ion are out l ined (working memory, modal i ty) . An experiment is conducted which on a populat ion of nine subject s invest igates the development of the capacity of working memory (memory span test ) and the abi l i ty to interpret features of modal i ty during the course of interpretat ion t raining (simul taneous interpretat ion of an Engl ish text wi th high incidence of modal i ty). On a populat ion of three subjects a fol low-up experiment invest igates the capaci ty of working memory and the abi l i ty to interpret features of modal i ty of experienced interpreters. Based on an analysis, evaluat ion and stat ist ical processing of the experimental resul ts, the thesis determines that working memory capaci ty and the abil i ty to interpret features of modal i ty may be related. The quant i tat ive research is supplemented by a discussion moving away f rom a purely pos i t ivist paradigm towards the interpretat ive (const ruct ivist ) paradigm; this discussion then out l ines problemat ic areas where further research could cont ribute towards a bet ter understanding of...Institute of Translation StudiesÚstav translatologieFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art
