Hybrid Speckle Noise Reduction Method for Abdominal Circumference Segmentation of Fetal Ultrasound Images

    Get PDF
Fetal biometric size such as abdominal circumference (AC) is used to predict fetal weight or gestational age in ultrasound images. The automatic biometric measurement can improve efficiency in the ultrasonography examination workflow. The unclear boundaries of the abdomen image and the speckle noise presence are the challenges for the automated AC measurement techniques. The main problem to improve the accuracy of the automatic AC segmentation is how to remove noise while retaining the boundary features of objects. In this paper, we proposed a hybrid ultrasound image denoising framework which was a combination of spatial-based filtering method and multiresolution based method.Ā  In this technique, an ultrasound image was decomposed into subbands using wavelet transform. A thresholding technique and the anisotropic diffusion method were applied to the detail subbands, at the same time the bilateral filtering modified the approximation subband. The proposed denoising approach had the best performance in the edge preservation level and could improve the accuracy of the abdominal circumference segmentation

Gray-level Texture Characterization Based on a New Adaptive

    Get PDF
In this paper, we propose a new nonlinear exponential adaptive two-dimensional (2-D) filter for texture characterization. The filter coefficients are updated with the Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm. The proposed nonlinear model is used for texture characterization with a 2-D Auto-Regressive (AR) adaptive model. The main advantage of the new nonlinear exponential adaptive 2-D filter is the reduced number of coefficients used to characterize the nonlinear parametric models of images regarding the 2-D second-order Volterra model. Whatever the degree of the non-linearity, the problem results in the same number of coefficients as in the linear case. The characterization efficiency of the proposed exponential model is compared to the one provided by both 2-D linear and Volterra filters and the cooccurrence matrix method. The comparison is based on two criteria usually used to evaluate the features discriminating ability and the class quantification. Extensive experiments proved that the exponential model coefficients give better results in texture discrimination than several other parametric features even in a noisy context

Joint Total Variation ESTATICS for Robust Multi-Parameter Mapping

Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) derives tissue-specific parameters -- such as the apparent transverse relaxation rate R2*, the longitudinal relaxation rate R1 and the magnetisation transfer saturation -- that can be compared across sites and scanners and carry important information about the underlying microstructure. The multi-parameter mapping (MPM) protocol takes advantage of multi-echo acquisitions with variable flip angles to extract these parameters in a clinically acceptable scan time. In this context, ESTATICS performs a joint loglinear fit of multiple echo series to extract R2* and multiple extrapolated intercepts, thereby improving robustness to motion and decreasing the variance of the estimators. In this paper, we extend this model in two ways: (1) by introducing a joint total variation (JTV) prior on the intercepts and decay, and (2) by deriving a nonlinear maximum \emph{a posteriori} estimate. We evaluated the proposed algorithm by predicting left-out echoes in a rich single-subject dataset. In this validation, we outperformed other state-of-the-art methods and additionally showed that the proposed approach greatly reduces the variance of the estimated maps, without introducing bias.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, conference paper, accepted at MICCAI 202

A multiresolution framework for local similarity based image denoising

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a generic framework for denoising of images corrupted with additive white Gaussian noise based on the idea of regional similarity. The proposed framework employs a similarity function using the distance between pixels in a multidimensional feature space, whereby multiple feature maps describing various local regional characteristics can be utilized, giving higher weight to pixels having similar regional characteristics. An extension of the proposed framework into a multiresolution setting using wavelets and scale space is presented. It is shown that the resulting multiresolution multilateral (MRM) filtering algorithm not only eliminates the coarse-grain noise but can also faithfully reconstruct anisotropic features, particularly in the presence of high levels of noise

Fast unsupervised multiresolution color image segmentation using adaptive gradient thresholding and progressive region growing

    Get PDF
In this thesis, we propose a fast unsupervised multiresolution color image segmentation algorithm which takes advantage of gradient information in an adaptive and progressive framework. This gradient-based segmentation method is initialized by a vector gradient calculation on the full resolution input image in the CIE L*a*b* color space. The resultant edge map is used to adaptively generate thresholds for classifying regions of varying gradient densities at different levels of the input image pyramid, obtained through a dyadic wavelet decomposition scheme. At each level, the classification obtained by a progressively thresholded growth procedure is combined with an entropy-based texture model in a statistical merging procedure to obtain an interim segmentation. Utilizing an association of a gradient quantized confidence map and non-linear spatial filtering techniques, regions of high confidence are passed from one level to another until the full resolution segmentation is achieved. Evaluation of our results on several hundred images using the Normalized Probabilistic Rand (NPR) Index shows that our algorithm outperforms state-of the art segmentation techniques and is much more computationally efficient than its single scale counterpart, with comparable segmentation quality
