    Delayed Dynamical Systems: Networks, Chimeras and Reservoir Computing

    We present a systematic approach to reveal the correspondence between time delay dynamics and networks of coupled oscillators. After early demonstrations of the usefulness of spatio-temporal representations of time-delay system dynamics, extensive research on optoelectronic feedback loops has revealed their immense potential for realizing complex system dynamics such as chimeras in rings of coupled oscillators and applications to reservoir computing. Delayed dynamical systems have been enriched in recent years through the application of digital signal processing techniques. Very recently, we have showed that one can significantly extend the capabilities and implement networks with arbitrary topologies through the use of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). This architecture allows the design of appropriate filters and multiple time delays which greatly extend the possibilities for exploring synchronization patterns in arbitrary topological networks. This has enabled us to explore complex dynamics on networks with nodes that can be perfectly identical, introduce parameter heterogeneities and multiple time delays, as well as change network topologies to control the formation and evolution of patterns of synchrony

    With its three-term functionality offering treatment of both transient and steady-state responses, proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control provides a generic and efficient solution to realworld control problems. The wide application of PID control has stimulated and sustained research and development to "get the best out of PID", and "the search is on to find the next key technology or methodology for PID tuning". This article presents remedies for problems involving the integral and derivative terms. PID design objectives, methods, and future directions are discussed. Subsequently, a computerized, simulation-based approach is presented, together with illustrative design results for first-order, higher order, and nonlinear plants. Finally, we discuss differences between academic research and industrial practice, so as to motivate new research directions in PID control

    A Suboptimal Receiver with Turbo Block Coding for Ultra-Wideband Communications

    In this paper, the performance of adaptive equalization and turbo product coding is investigated for pulse-based UWB communications in short-range indoor environments. The sensitivity of adaptive LMS linear and nonlinear (decision-feedback) equalizers with respect to the number of training symbols and number of taps is considered. To reduce the error performance variation with respect to changing channel conditions, a turbo product code (TPC) with two component (31,26,3) Hamming codes is proposed. We report simulation results showing that channel coding not only improves error performance, but also reduces significantly the sensitivity of UWB systems in short-range indoor wireless communications

    Biophysical modelling of a drosophila photoreceptor

    It remains unclear how visual information is co-processed by different layers of neurons in the retina. In particular, relatively little is known how retina translates vast environmental light changes into neural responses of limited range. We began examining this question in a bottom-up way in a relatively simple °y eye. To gain understanding of how complex bio-molecular interactions govern the conversion of light input into voltage output (phototransduction), we are building a biophysical model of the Drosophila R1-R6 photoreceptor. Our model, which relates molecular dynamics of the underlying biochemical reactions to external light input, attempts to capture the molecular dynamics of phototransduction gain control in a quantitative way

    Fast recursive filters for simulating nonlinear dynamic systems

    A fast and accurate computational scheme for simulating nonlinear dynamic systems is presented. The scheme assumes that the system can be represented by a combination of components of only two different types: first-order low-pass filters and static nonlinearities. The parameters of these filters and nonlinearities may depend on system variables, and the topology of the system may be complex, including feedback. Several examples taken from neuroscience are given: phototransduction, photopigment bleaching, and spike generation according to the Hodgkin-Huxley equations. The scheme uses two slightly different forms of autoregressive filters, with an implicit delay of zero for feedforward control and an implicit delay of half a sample distance for feedback control. On a fairly complex model of the macaque retinal horizontal cell it computes, for a given level of accuracy, 1-2 orders of magnitude faster than 4th-order Runge-Kutta. The computational scheme has minimal memory requirements, and is also suited for computation on a stream processor, such as a GPU (Graphical Processing Unit).Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 1 table.     Adaptive feedforward control design for gust loads alleviation and LCO suppression

    An adaptive feedforward controller is designed for gust loads alleviation and limit cycle oscillations suppression. Two sets of basis functions, based on the finite impulse response and modified finite impulse response approaches, are investigated to design the controller for gust loads alleviation. Limit cycle oscillations suppression is shown by using the modified finite impulse response controller. Worst case gust search is performed by using a nonlinear technique of model reduction to speed up the costs of calculations. Both the “one–minus–cosine” and Von Kármán continuous turbulence gusts of different intensities were generated to examine the performance of controllers. The responses of these two types of gust can be reduced effectively by finite impulse response controller in the whole process, while the modified finite impulse response controller is found to increase the loads during the initial transient response. The above two types of gust induced limit cycle oscillations were used to test the modified finite impulse response controller.
