    Orbiting Rainbows: Optical Manipulation of Aerosols and the Beginnings of Future Space Construction

    Our objective is to investigate the conditions to manipulate and maintain the shape of an orbiting cloud of dust-like matter so that it can function as an ultra-lightweight surface with useful and adaptable electromagnetic characteristics, for instance, in the optical, RF, or microwave bands. Inspired by the light scattering and focusing properties of distributed optical assemblies in Nature, such as rainbows and aerosols, and by recent laboratory successes in optical trapping and manipulation, we propose a unique combination of space optics and autonomous robotic system technology, to enable a new vision of space system architecture with applications to ultra-lightweight space optics and, ultimately, in-situ space system fabrication. Typically, the cost of an optical system is driven by the size and mass of the primary aperture. The ideal system is a cloud of spatially disordered dust-like objects that can be optically manipulated: it is highly reconfigurable, fault-tolerant, and allows very large aperture sizes at low cost. See Figure 1 for a scenario of application of this concept. The solution that we propose is to construct an optical system in space in which the nonlinear optical properties of a cloud of micron-sized particles are shaped into a specific surface by light pressure, allowing it to form a very large and lightweight aperture of an optical system, hence reducing overall mass and cost. Other potential advantages offered by the cloud properties as optical system involve possible combination of properties (combined transmit/receive), variable focal length, combined refractive and reflective lens designs, and hyper-spectral imaging. A cloud of highly reflective particles of micron-size acting coherently in a specific electromagnetic band, just like an aerosol in suspension in the atmosphere, would reflect the Sun's light much like a rainbow. The only difference with an atmospheric or industrial aerosol is the absence of the supporting fluid medium. This new concept is based on recent understandings in the physics of optical manipulation of small particles in the laboratory and the engineering of distributed ensembles of spacecraft clouds to shape an orbiting cloud of micron-sized objects. In the same way that optical tweezers have revolutionized micro- and nano-manipulation of objects, our breakthrough concept will enable new large scale NASA mission applications and develop new technology in the areas of Astrophysical Imaging Systems and Remote Sensing because the cloud can operate as an adaptive optical imaging sensor. While achieving the feasibility of constructing one single aperture out of the cloud is the main topic of this work, it is clear that multiple orbiting aerosol lenses could also combine their power to synthesize a much larger aperture in space to enable challenging goals such as exoplanet detection. Furthermore, this effort could establish feasibility of key issues related to material properties, remote manipulation, and autonomy characteristics of cloud in orbit. There are several types of endeavors (science missions) that could be enabled by this type of approach, i.e. it can enable new astrophysical imaging systems, exoplanet search, large apertures allow for unprecedented high resolution to discern continents and important features of other planets, hyperspectral imaging, adaptive systems, spectroscopy imaging through limb, and stable optical systems from Lagrange-points. Future micro-miniaturization might hold promise of a further extension of our dust aperture concept to other more exciting smart dust concepts with other associated capabilities

    Nonlinear control and synchronization of multiple Lagrangian systems with application to tethered formation flight spacecraft

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 217-228).This dissertation focuses on the synchronization of multiple dynamical systems using contraction theory, with applications to cooperative control of multi-agent systems and synchronization of interconnected dynamics such as tethered formation flight. Inspired by stable combinations of biological systems, contraction nonlinear stability theory provides a systematic method to reduce arbitrarily complex systems into simpler elements. One application of oscillation synchronization is a fully decentralized nonlinear control law, which eliminates the need for any inter-satellite communications. We use contraction theory to prove that a nonlinear control law stabilizing a single-tethered spacecraft can also stabilize arbitrarily large circular arrays of tethered spacecraft, as well as a three-spacecraft inline configuration. The convergence result is global and exponential due to the nature of contraction analysis. The proposed decentralized control strategy is further extended to robust adaptive control in order to account for model uncertainties. Numerical simulations and experimental results validate the exponential stability of the tethered formation arrays by implementing a tracking control law derived from the reduced dynamics.(cont.) This thesis also presents a new synchronization framework that can be directly applied to cooperative control of autonomous aerospace vehicles and oscillation synchronization in robotic manipulation and locomotion. We construct a dynamical network of multiple Lagrangian systems by adding diffusive couplings to otherwise freely moving or flying vehicles. The proposed tracking control law synchronizes an arbitrary number of robots into a common trajectory with global exponential convergence. The proposed control law is much simpler than earlier work in terms of both the computational load and the required signals. Furthermore, in contrast with earlier work which used simple double integrator models, the proposed method permits highly nonlinear systems and is further extended to adaptive synchronization, partial-joint coupling, and concurrent synchronization. Another contribution of the dissertation is a novel nonlinear control approach for underactuated tethered formation flight spacecraft. This is motivated by a controllability analysis that indicates that both array resizing and spin-up are fully controllable by the reaction wheels and the tether motor. This work reports the first propellant-free underactuated control results for tethered formation flight.(cont.) We also fulfill the potential of the proposed strategy by providing a new momentum dumping method. This dissertation work has evolved based on the research philosophy of balancing theoretical work with practicality, aiming at physically intuitive algorithms that can be directly implemented in real systems. In order to validate the effectiveness of the decentralized control and estimation framework, a new suite of hardware has been designed and added to the SPHERES (Synchronize Position Hold Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellite) testbed. Such recent improvements described in this dissertation include a new tether reel mechanism, a force-torque sensor and an air-bearing carriage with a reaction wheel. This thesis also introduces a novel relative attitude estimator, in which a series of Kalman filters incorporate the gyro, force-torque sensor and ultrasound ranging measurements.     Multibody Dynamics and Control of Tethered Spacecraft Systems

    This doctoral research conducts high-fidelity multiphysics modeling for tethered spacecraft systems, such as electrodynamic tether systems, electric solar wind sail systems, and tether transportation systems with climbers. Two models are developed based on nodal position finite element method. The first model deals with the tethered spacecraft system with fixed length tether, while the second model deals with the tethered spacecraft system with variable tether length using an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian description. First, the nodal position finite element method is applied to model the orbital motion of tethered spacecraft systems with fixed tether length over a prolonged period. A Symplectic integration scheme is employed to attenuate the accumulation of error in the numerical analysis due to the long-term integration for tethered spacecraft systems, such as the space debris deorbit by electrodynamic tethers. A high fidelity multiphysics model is developed for electrodynamic tether systems by considering elastic, thermal, and electrical coupling effects of the tether. Most importantly, the calculation of electron collection by the electrodynamic tether is coupled with the tether libration and flexible deformation, where the orbital motion limited theory for electron collection is discretized simultaneously by the same finite element mesh used for the elastodynamic analysis of tether. The model is then used to investigate dynamics and libration stability of bare electrodynamic tethers in deorbiting end-of-mission spacecraft. Second, the model of tethered spacecraft system with fixed tether length is extended for the modeling of electric solar wind sail systems. The coupling effect of orbital and self-spinning motions of electric solar wind sail systems is investigated together with the interaction between the axial/transverse elastic motion of tether and Coulomb force. A modified throttling control algorithm is implemented in the finite element scheme to control the attitude motion of electric solar wind sail systems through the electric voltage modulation of main tethers. Third, the model of tethered spacecraft with variable tether length is applied to handle the tether length variation in tether transportation systems. The tether length variation results from the climber moving along tether and deployment and retrieval of tether at end spacecraft. The dynamic behavior of tether transportation systems with single or multiple climbers in characterized and the effectiveness of libration suppression scheme is tested by the high-fidelity model

    Spacecraft/Rover Hybrids for the Exploration of Small Solar System Bodies

    This study investigated a mission architecture that allows the systematic and affordable in-situ exploration of small solar system bodies, such as asteroids, comets, and Martian moons (Figure 1). The architecture relies on the novel concept of spacecraft/rover hybrids,which are surface mobility platforms capable of achieving large surface coverage (by attitude controlled hops, akin to spacecraft flight), fine mobility (by tumbling), and coarse instrument pointing (by changing orientation relative to the ground) in the low-gravity environments(micro-g to milli-g) of small bodies. The actuation of the hybrids relies on spinning three internal flywheels. Using a combination of torques, the three flywheel motors can produce a reaction torque in any orientation without additional moving parts. This mobility concept allows all subsystems to be packaged in one sealed enclosure and enables the platforms to be minimalistic. The hybrids would be deployed from a mother spacecraft, which would act as a communication relay to Earth and would aid the in-situ assets with tasks such as localization and navigation (Figure 1). The hybrids are expected to be more capable and affordable than wheeled or legged rovers, due to their multiple modes of mobility (both hopping and tumbling), and have simpler environmental sealing and thermal management (since all components are sealed in one enclosure, assuming non-deployable science instruments). In summary, this NIAC Phase II study has significantly increased the TRL (Technology Readiness Level) of the mobility and autonomy subsystems of spacecraft/rover hybrids, and characterized system engineering aspects in the context of a reference mission to Phobos. Future studies should focus on improving the robustness of the autonomy module and further refine system engineering aspects, in view of opportunities for technology infusion
