Intercalates and Discrepancy in Random Latin Squares

An intercalate in a Latin square is a 2×22\times2 Latin subsquare. Let NN be the number of intercalates in a uniformly random n×nn\times n Latin square. We prove that asymptotically almost surely N(1o(1))n2/4N\ge\left(1-o\left(1\right)\right)\,n^{2}/4, and that EN(1+o(1))n2/2\mathbb{E}N\le\left(1+o\left(1\right)\right)\,n^{2}/2 (therefore asymptotically almost surely Nfn2N\le fn^{2} for any ff\to\infty). This significantly improves the previous best lower and upper bounds. We also give an upper tail bound for the number of intercalates in two fixed rows of a random Latin square. In addition, we discuss a problem of Linial and Luria on low-discrepancy Latin squares

A semiparametric analysis of determinants of protected area.

We use a semiparametric additive model to study the relationship between protected area, income, trade, population, education, and political institutions in a sample of 89 countries. The results show the nonexistence of environmental Kuznets curve in the data sample. The study also points out the existence of nonlinearity in the relationship between protected area and the ratio of net secondary school enrollment.Education; environmental Kuznets curve; protected area; semipara-metric additive models

Foreign Direct Investment and Economic Growth in Bolivia, 1990- 1998

This paper employs ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation to examine the determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) and the effect of FDI on per capita GDP growth in Bolivia over the period 1990:1-1998:4. The regression results find that the real effective multilateral exchange rate, the ratio of external debt to GDP, and a dummy representing capitalization inflows significantly impact FDI, while FDI, along with the terms-of-trade, the ratio of private sector credit to GDP, and the ratio of government spending to GDP are shown to have a statistically significant impact on per capita GDP growth. The exclusion of capitalization inflows from total FDI in the FDI determinants model has very little impact on the overall results.Bolivia, Foreign Direct Investment, Economic Growth, Privatization, Capitalization

A meta-regression analysis of benchmarking studies on water utilities market structure

This paper updates the literature on water utility benchmarking studies carried out worldwide, focusing on scale and scope economies. Using meta-regression analysis, the study investigates which variables from published studies influence these economies. Our analysis led to several conclusions. The results indicate that there is a higher probability of finding diseconomies of scale and scope in large utilities; however, only the results for scale economies are significant. Diseconomies of scale and scope are more likely to be found in publicly-owned utilities than when the ownership is mostly private; as would be expected, multi-utilities are more likely to have scale and scope economies.economies of scale; economies of scope; meta-regression analysis; water utilities
