Possible areas for the use of spinoff from NASA technology by the California State Department of Corrections are identified. Chinese Mine Warfare: A PLA Navy \u27Assassin\u27s Mace\u27 Capability

After a lengthy hiatus-lasting nearly six centuries—China is reemerging as a maritime power, this time with an emphasis on undersea warfare. Between 1996 and 2006, the Chinese navy took delivery of more than thirty submarines. These vessels include two new classes of nuclear submarines-the advanced Song-class diesel submarines and the Yuan class of diesel boats which, according to some reports, was a surprise for U.S. intelligence. Above and beyond this ambitious naval construction program, the People\u27s Republic of China (PRC) received during 2005-06 an additional eight formidable Kilo-class submarines (and associated weaponry), which were purchased in 2002, to add to the four it already operated. Cookie Dough Portioning Tool

The Brown Butter Cookie Company (BBCC) is located in Cayucos, California. They sell handmade cookies made without eggs. After a batch is made, dough pieces must be portioned by hand. This process is time consuming, labor intensive, and limits the number of cookies they can make. Our task was to design a machine to replace or improve this step of the process. After talking with the members of the BBCC and creating a list of specifications for our device, the team has formulated a detailed design of a cookie dough portioning tool for the BBCC. This report includes information on ideation and iteration, SolidWorks modeling, stress analysis, and manufacturing of the device. The final design uses an extrusion process to portion the cookie dough. To this end, a test device was built and used to experimentally test the extrusion behavior of the cookie dough. The report contains information on the manufacture of this test device, as well as the testing procedure and data analysis of the results. In the end, testing showed that the final design presented here should work to fulfill the needs of the BBCC, and this design is ready to be passed to another firm for manufacture of the final device

Successful Strategies of Small Business Owners to Recruit Veterans

Approximately 300,000 highly skilled veterans leave military service every year, yet some small business owners lack strategies to recruit these skilled workers. The specific business problem addressed in this multiple case study was that some small information technology business leaders lack strategies to recruit military veterans. The research sample included 3 owners of small businesses serving the information technology industry in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States who developed and implemented successful strategies for recruiting veterans. Data were collected from interviews and review of documents. Data analysis resulted in the identification of 3 major themes: understanding of veterans as a means to determining organizational, job, and environmental fit; targeting veterans for recruitment and hiring; and retaining veterans as members of the small business civilian workforce. The implications for social change included the potential for a reduction of the unemployment rate among veterans and an increase in veterans\u27 purchasing power in support of their local communities
