    Integrating materials supply in strategic mine planning of underground coal mines

    In July 2005 the Australian Coal Industry’s Research Program (ACARP) commissioned Gary Gibson to identify constraints that would prevent development production rates from achieving full capacity. A “TOP 5” constraint was “The logistics of supply transport distribution and handling of roof support consumables is an issue at older extensive mines immediately while the achievement of higher development rates will compound this issue at most mines.” Then in 2020, Walker, Harvey, Baafi, Kiridena, and Porter were commissioned by ACARP to investigate Australian best practice and progress made since Gibson’s 2005 report. This report was titled: - “Benchmarking study in underground coal mining logistics.” It found that even though logistics continue to be recognised as a critical constraint across many operations particularly at a tactical / day to day level, no strategic thought had been given to logistics in underground coal mines, rather it was always assumed that logistics could keep up with any future planned design and productivity. This subsequently meant that without estimating the impact of any logistical constraint in a life of mine plan, the risk of overvaluing a mining operation is high. This thesis attempts to rectify this shortfall and has developed a system to strategically identify logistics bottlenecks and the impacts that mine planning parameters might have on these at any point in time throughout a life of mine plan. By identifying any logistics constraints as early as possible, the best opportunity to rectify the problem at the least expense is realised. At the very worst if a logistics constraint was unsolvable then it could be understood, planned for, and reflected in the mine’s ongoing financial valuations. The system developed in this thesis, using a suite of unique algorithms, is designed to “bolt onto” existing mine plans in the XPAC mine scheduling software package, and identify at a strategic level the number of material delivery loads required to maintain planned productivity for a mining operation. Once an event was identified the system then drills down using FlexSim discrete event simulation to a tactical level to confirm the predicted impact and understand if a solution can be transferred back as a long-term solution. Most importantly the system developed in this thesis was designed to communicate to multiple non-technical stakeholders through simple graphical outputs if there is a risk to planned production levels due to a logistics constraint

    Endogenous measures for contextualising large-scale social phenomena: a corpus-based method for mediated public discourse

    This work presents an interdisciplinary methodology for developing endogenous measures of group membership through analysis of pervasive linguistic patterns in public discourse. Focusing on political discourse, this work critiques the conventional approach to the study of political participation, which is premised on decontextualised, exogenous measures to characterise groups. Considering the theoretical and empirical weaknesses of decontextualised approaches to large-scale social phenomena, this work suggests that contextualisation using endogenous measures might provide a complementary perspective to mitigate such weaknesses. This work develops a sociomaterial perspective on political participation in mediated discourse as affiliatory action performed through language. While the affiliatory function of language is often performed consciously (such as statements of identity), this work is concerned with unconscious features (such as patterns in lexis and grammar). This work argues that pervasive patterns in such features that emerge through socialisation are resistant to change and manipulation, and thus might serve as endogenous measures of sociopolitical contexts, and thus of groups. In terms of method, the work takes a corpus-based approach to the analysis of data from the Twitter messaging service whereby patterns in users’ speech are examined statistically in order to trace potential community membership. The method is applied in the US state of Michigan during the second half of 2018—6 November having been the date of midterm (i.e. non-Presidential) elections in the United States. The corpus is assembled from the original posts of 5,889 users, who are nominally geolocalised to 417 municipalities. These users are clustered according to pervasive language features. Comparing the linguistic clusters according to the municipalities they represent finds that there are regular sociodemographic differentials across clusters. This is understood as an indication of social structure, suggesting that endogenous measures derived from pervasive patterns in language may indeed offer a complementary, contextualised perspective on large-scale social phenomena

    Application of Track Geometry Deterioration Modelling and Data Mining in Railway Asset Management

    Modernin rautatiejärjestelmän hallinnassa rahankäyttö kohdistuu valtaosin nykyisen rataverkon korjauksiin ja parannuksiin ennemmin kuin uusien ratojen rakentamiseen. Nykyisen rataverkon kunnossapitotyöt aiheuttavat suurten kustannusten lisäksi myös usein liikennerajoitteita tai yhteyksien väliaikaisia sulkemisia, jotka heikentävät rataverkon käytettävyyttä Siispä oikea-aikainen ja pitkäaikaisia parannuksia aikaansaava kunnossapito ovat edellytyksiä kilpailukykyisille ja täsmällisille rautatiekuljetuksille. Tällainen kunnossapito vaatii vankan tietopohjan radan nykyisestä kunnosta päätöksenteon tueksi. Ratainfran omistajat teettävät päätöksenteon tueksi useita erilaisia radan kuntoa kuvaavia mittauksia ja ylläpitävät kattavia omaisuustietorekistereitä. Kenties tärkein näistä datalähteistä on koneellisen radantarkastuksen tuottamat mittaustulokset, jotka kuvastavat radan geometrian kuntoa. Nämä mittaustulokset ovat tärkeitä, koska ne tuottavat luotettavaa kuntotietoa: mittaukset tehdään toistuvasti, 2–6 kertaa vuodessa Suomessa rataosasta riippuen, mittausvaunu pysyy useita vuosia samana, tulokset ovat hyvin toistettavia ja ne antavat hyvän yleiskuvan radan kunnosta. Vaikka laadukasta dataa on paljon saatavilla, käytännön omaisuudenhallinnassa on merkittäviä haasteita datan analysoinnissa, sillä vakiintuneita menetelmiä siihen on vähän. Käytännössä seurataan usein vain mittaustulosten raja-arvojen ylittymistä ja pyritään subjektiivisesti arvioimaan rakenteiden kunnon kehittymistä ja korjaustarpeita. Kehittyneen analytiikan puutteet estävät kuntotietojen laajamittaisen hyödyntämisen kunnossapidon suunnittelussa, mikä vaikeuttaa päätöksentekoa. Tämän väitöskirjatutkimuksen päätavoitteita olivat kehittää ratageometrian heikkenemiseen mallintamismenetelmiä, soveltaa tiedonlouhintaa saatavilla olevan omaisuusdatan analysointiin sekä jalkauttaa kyseiset tutkimustulokset käytännön rataomaisuudenhallintaan. Ratageometrian heikkenemisen mallintamismenetelmien kehittämisessä keskityttiin tuottamaan nykyisin saatavilla olevasta datasta uutta tietoa radan kunnon kehityksestä, tehdyn kunnossapidon tehokkuudesta sekä tulevaisuuden kunnossapitotarpeista. Tiedonlouhintaa sovellettiin ratageometrian heikkenemisen juurisyiden selvittämiseen rataomaisuusdatan perusteella. Lopuksi hyödynnettiin kypsyysmalleja perustana ratageometrian heikkenemisen mallinnuksen ja rataomaisuusdatan analytiikan käytäntöön viennille. Tutkimustulosten perusteella suomalainen radantarkastus- ja rataomaisuusdata olivat riittäviä tavoiteltuihin analyyseihin. Tulokset osoittivat, että robusti lineaarinen optimointi soveltuu hyvin suomalaisen rataverkon ratageometrian heikkenemisen mallinnukseen. Mallinnuksen avulla voidaan tuottaa tunnuslukuja, jotka kuvaavat rakenteen kuntoa, kunnossapidon tehokkuutta ja tulevaa kunnossapitotarvetta, sekä muodostaa havainnollistavia visualisointeja datasta. Rataomaisuusdatan eksploratiiviseen tiedonlouhintaan käytetyn GUHA-menetelmän avulla voitiin selvittää mielenkiintoisia ja vaikeasti havaittavia korrelaatioita datasta. Näiden tulosten avulla saatiin uusia havaintoja ongelmallisista ratarakennetyypeistä. Havaintojen avulla voitiin kohdentaa jatkotutkimuksia näihin rakenteisiin, mikä ei olisi ollut mahdollista, jollei tiedonlouhinnan avulla olisi ensin tunnistettu näitä rakennetyyppejä. Kypsyysmallin soveltamisen avulla luotiin puitteet ratageometrian heikkenemisen mallintamisen ja rataomaisuusdatan analytiikan kehitykselle Suomen rataomaisuuden hallinnassa. Kypsyysmalli tarjosi käytännöllisen tavan lähestyä tarvittavaa kehitystyötä, kun eteneminen voitiin jaotella neljään eri kypsyystasoon, jotka loivat selkeitä välitavoitteita. Kypsyysmallin ja asetettujen välitavoitteiden avulla kehitys on suunniteltua ja edistystä voidaan jaotella, mikä antaa edellytykset tämän laajamittaisen kehityksen onnistuneelle läpiviennille. Tämän väitöskirjatutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, miten nykyisin saatavilla olevasta datasta saadaan täysin uutta ja merkityksellistä tietoa, kun sitä käsitellään kehittyneen analytiikan avulla. Tämä väitöskirja tarjoaa datankäsittelyratkaisujen luomisen ja soveltamisen lisäksi myös keinoja niiden käytäntöönpanolle, sillä tietopohjaisen päätöksenteon todelliset hyödyt saavutetaan vasta käytännön radanpidossa.In the management of a modern European railway system, spending is predominantly allocated to maintaining and renewing the existing rail network rather than constructing completely new lines. In addition to major costs, the maintenance and renewals of the existing rail network often cause traffic restrictions or line closures, which decrease the usability of the rail network. Therefore, timely maintenance that achieves long-lasting improvements is imperative for achieving competitive and punctual rail traffic. This kind of maintenance requires a strong knowledge base for decision making regarding the current condition of track structures. Track owners commission several different measurements that depict the condition of track structures and have comprehensive asset management data repositories. Perhaps one of the most important data sources is the track recording car measurement history, which depicts the condition of track geometry at different times. These measurement results are important because they offer a reliable condition database; the measurements are done recurrently, two to six times a year in Finland depending on the track section; the same recording car is used for many years; the results are repeatable; and they provide a good overall idea of the condition of track structures. However, although high-quality data is available, there are major challenges in analysing the data in practical asset management because there are few established methods for analytics. Practical asset management typically only monitors whether given threshold values are exceeded and subjectively assesses maintenance needs and development in the condition of track structures. The lack of advanced analytics prevents the full utilisation of the available data in maintenance planning which hinders decision making. The main goals of this dissertation study were to develop track geometry deterioration modelling methods, apply data mining in analysing currently available railway asset data, and implement the results from these studies into practical railway asset management. The development of track geometry deterioration modelling methods focused on utilising currently available data for producing novel information on the development in the condition of track structures, past maintenance effectiveness, and future maintenance needs. Data mining was applied in investigating the root causes of track geometry deterioration based on asset data. Finally, maturity models were applied as the basis for implementing track geometry deterioration modelling and track asset data analytics into practice. Based on the research findings, currently available Finnish measurement and asset data was sufficient for the desired analyses. For the Finnish track inspection data, robust linear optimisation was developed for track geometry deterioration modelling. The modelling provided key figures, which depict the condition of structures, maintenance effectiveness, and future maintenance needs. Moreover, visualisations were created from the modelling to enable the practical use of the modelling results. The applied exploratory data mining method, General Unary Hypotheses Automaton (GUHA), could find interesting and hard-to-detect correlations within asset data. With these correlations, novel observations on problematic track structure types were made. The observations could be utilised for allocating further research for problematic track structures, which would not have been possible without using data mining to identify these structures. The implementation of track geometry deterioration and asset data analytics into practice was approached by applying maturity models. The use of maturity models offered a practical way of approaching future development, as the development could be divided into four maturity levels, which created clear incremental goals for development. The maturity model and the incremental goals enabled wide-scale development planning, in which the progress can be segmented and monitored, which enhances successful project completion. The results from these studies demonstrate how currently available data can be used to provide completely new and meaningful information, when advanced analytics are used. In addition to novel solutions for data analytics, this dissertation research also provided methods for implementing the solutions, as the true benefits of knowledge-based decision making are obtained in only practical railway asset management

    Technical Dimensions of Programming Systems

    Programming requires much more than just writing code in a programming language. It is usually done in the context of a stateful environment, by interacting with a system through a graphical user interface. Yet, this wide space of possibilities lacks a common structure for navigation. Work on programming systems fails to form a coherent body of research, making it hard to improve on past work and advance the state of the art. In computer science, much has been said and done to allow comparison of programming languages, yet no similar theory exists for programming systems; we believe that programming systems deserve a theory too. We present a framework of technical dimensions which capture the underlying characteristics of programming systems and provide a means for conceptualizing and comparing them. We identify technical dimensions by examining past influential programming systems and reviewing their design principles, technical capabilities, and styles of user interaction. Technical dimensions capture characteristics that may be studied, compared and advanced independently. This makes it possible to talk about programming systems in a way that can be shared and constructively debated rather than relying solely on personal impressions. Our framework is derived using a qualitative analysis of past programming systems. We outline two concrete ways of using our framework. First, we show how it can analyze a recently developed novel programming system. Then, we use it to identify an interesting unexplored point in the design space of programming systems. Much research effort focuses on building programming systems that are easier to use, accessible to non-experts, moldable and/or powerful, but such efforts are disconnected. They are informal, guided by the personal vision of their authors and thus are only evaluable and comparable on the basis of individual experience using them. By providing foundations for more systematic research, we can help programming systems researchers to stand, at last, on the shoulders of giants

    A Design Science Research Approach to Smart and Collaborative Urban Supply Networks

    Urban supply networks are facing increasing demands and challenges and thus constitute a relevant field for research and practical development. Supply chain management holds enormous potential and relevance for society and everyday life as the flow of goods and information are important economic functions. Being a heterogeneous field, the literature base of supply chain management research is difficult to manage and navigate. Disruptive digital technologies and the implementation of cross-network information analysis and sharing drive the need for new organisational and technological approaches. Practical issues are manifold and include mega trends such as digital transformation, urbanisation, and environmental awareness. A promising approach to solving these problems is the realisation of smart and collaborative supply networks. The growth of artificial intelligence applications in recent years has led to a wide range of applications in a variety of domains. However, the potential of artificial intelligence utilisation in supply chain management has not yet been fully exploited. Similarly, value creation increasingly takes place in networked value creation cycles that have become continuously more collaborative, complex, and dynamic as interactions in business processes involving information technologies have become more intense. Following a design science research approach this cumulative thesis comprises the development and discussion of four artefacts for the analysis and advancement of smart and collaborative urban supply networks. This thesis aims to highlight the potential of artificial intelligence-based supply networks, to advance data-driven inter-organisational collaboration, and to improve last mile supply network sustainability. Based on thorough machine learning and systematic literature reviews, reference and system dynamics modelling, simulation, and qualitative empirical research, the artefacts provide a valuable contribution to research and practice

    Anticholinergic use in the UK: longitudinal trends and associations with cognitive outcomes

    Observational studies have shown an association between the use of anticholinergic drugs and various negative health outcomes. However, when studying cognitive outcomes, there is great heterogeneity in previous results. The objectives of the present thesis are threefold. First, to explore the longitudinal patterns of anticholinergic prescribing in the UK. Second, to examine the association between anticholinergic burden and dementia. Third, to probe the relationship between anticholinergic burden, general cognitive ability, and brain structural MRI in relatively healthy participants. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the role of acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter in the human body. It begins with a description of its molecular characteristics and continues with a summary of anatomical and cellular features of cholinergic pathways in the brain. The chapter concludes with a description of the relevance of cholinergic processing in cognition and Alzheimer’s disease. Chapter 2 gives a summary of anticholinergic drugs. It describes the history of anticholinergic compounds and their present use in medicine. It then appraises the tools used to gauge the anticholinergic potency of drugs. I conclude the Chapter by evaluating the available evidence on the effects of anticholinergic drugs on various important health outcomes. Chapter 3 focuses on UK Biobank, the sample used in all analyses presented in this thesis. The chapter briefly describes the conception of the study, the timeline of assessments, and the available variables. I focus in my descriptions on the variables that were used in the present thesis, especially cognitive tests, brain imaging, and linked health data. Chapters 4 to 6 present the empirical work conducted as part of this thesis. Chapter 4 presents an analysis of anticholinergic prescribing trends in UK primary care from the year 1990 to 2015. I first calculate an anticholinergic burden (AChB) according to 13 different anticholinergic scales and an average to derive a “Meta-scale”. I then describe the prevalence of anticholinergic prescribing and its longitudinal trend for all scales. I use different plots of age-, period- and cohort effects on the AChB according to the Meta-scale to evaluate the contributions of these effects to the linear longitudinal trend. The study finds AChB to have increased 9-fold over 25 years and that this effect was attributable to both age- and cohort/period-related changes. In other words, ageing of the sample is not sufficient to explain the increase in anticholinergic prescribing; cohort- or period-effects must have contributed to the observed changes. Chapter 5 explores the relationship between anticholinergic prescribing and dementia. Previous studies on this topic had provided varied results. One of the goals of the present study was to probe potential factors for this heterogeneity. We find that greater AChB according to most of the studied anticholinergic scales (standardised HRs range: 1.027-1.125), as well as the slope of anticholinergic change (HR=1.094; 95% CI: 1.068-1.119), are associated with dementia. However, we find that not all drug classes are associated with dementia. Antidepressants (HR=1.11, 95% CI=1.07-1.17), antiepileptics (HR=1.07, 95% CI=1.04-1.11), and the antidiuretic furosemide (HR=1.06, 95% CI=1.02-1.10) exhibit the strongest effects. Interestingly, when exploring the effects of groups of anticholinergic drugs with different anticholinergic potencies, only the moderate potency group shows significant associations with dementia (HR=1.10, 95% CI=1.05-1.15). Chapter 6 examines the association between AChB, general cognitive ability, and brain structural MRI. It aims both to explore the potential sources of heterogeneity in previous work, as well as to expand on it by studying relatively healthy community-dwelling adults. We study brain structural MRI in a much bigger sample (at least 5x bigger) and use many more outcomes than previous studies. We find weak, but significant associations between AChB and general cognitive ability, and with 7/9 individual cognitive tests (standardised betas (β) range: -0.039, -0.003). Again, AChB in only some drug classes is associated with lower general cognitive ability, especially β-lactam antibiotics (β=-0.035, pFDR. Finally, chapter 7 summarizes the findings presented in chapters 4 to 6. The chapter also provides a critique of the sample and of my approach when conducting the analyses presented in the present thesis. The chapter concludes by discussing suggestions for future work on this topic

    Ecology and Conservation of River dolphins in Peru

    Freshwater cetaceans are seven highly threatened species with restricted ranges that inhabit rivers in close proximity to human populations. Over the past two decades, it has become increasingly clear that the limited resources to monitor population trends and existing knowledge gaps have hampered the design of effective conservation actions, with one species of river cetacean, the baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), being declared extinct. In this dissertation, I review the current state of knowledge on river cetaceans and provide new insights into the ecology and distribution of two South American freshwater dolphins, the boto or Amazon River dolphin (Inia geoffrensis) and the tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis). In Chapter 1 I summarise what is currently known regarding their taxonomy, distribution, and ecology. Chapter 2 reviews the current global conservation status of river cetaceans through a combination of expert elicitation and a synthesis of literature on threats and management. I also identify knowledge gaps and use this data to inform subsequent chapters. To improve the management of these species, I recommend future conservation efforts that build local capacity in each range country, strive for regional cooperation, and increase knowledge and public awareness. In Chapter 3, I interview fishers from the Peruvian Amazon to better understand their perceptions and interactions with the Amazon River dolphin and the tucuxi. I report perception of competition and negative perceptions, the use of Amazon River dolphins as bait for the piracatinga catfish fishery, and bycatch of both species in purse seines and gillnets. The results allow prioritisation of which ports should be monitored in order to reduce bycatch and direct take. In Chapter 4, I use satellite transmitters to identify overlap between monitored Amazon River dolphins and key threats in their range. All dolphin home ranges overlap with areas of small-scale fishery catch. Existing dams are relatively far away from dolphin populations, but proposed dams are less than 200 kilometres upstream. Monitored animals are close to a proposed hydroway, which will result in an increase in vessel traffic and recurrent dredging. In Chapter 5, I estimate the density of both species in a previously unexplored area of the western Amazon of Peru while also testing the application of environmental-DNA (eDNA) for validating species presence. Sampling for eDNA is successful at detecting both species at 68% of the sampled locations. I discuss potential applications of this method for addressing knowledge gaps. In Chapter 6, I summarise the significance of the findings of my dissertation and suggest what should be done in the future to better conserve river dolphins. Using a variety of methods, including questionnaires, satellite transmitters, distance sampling, and eDNA, this dissertation provides baseline data for river dolphins in Peru. I propose that for the sustainability of their populations in Peru, research should concentrate on tracking population trends and estimating human-caused mortality. Participation of local communities in key conservation actions, such as the design and implementation of protected areas, research, and law enforcement, would increase the likelihood of conservation interventions being successful

    Review of Methodologies to Assess Bridge Safety During and After Floods

    This report summarizes a review of technologies used to monitor bridge scour with an emphasis on techniques appropriate for testing during and immediately after design flood conditions. The goal of this study is to identify potential technologies and strategies for Illinois Department of Transportation that may be used to enhance the reliability of bridge safety monitoring during floods from local to state levels. The research team conducted a literature review of technologies that have been explored by state departments of transportation (DOTs) and national agencies as well as state-of-the-art technologies that have not been extensively employed by DOTs. This review included informational interviews with representatives from DOTs and relevant industry organizations. Recommendations include considering (1) acquisition of tethered kneeboard or surf ski-mounted single-beam sonars for rapid deployment by local agencies, (2) acquisition of remote-controlled vessels mounted with single-beam and side-scan sonars for statewide deployment, (3) development of large-scale particle image velocimetry systems using remote-controlled drones for stream velocity and direction measurement during floods, (4) physical modeling to develop Illinois-specific hydrodynamic loading coefficients for Illinois bridges during flood conditions, and (5) development of holistic risk-based bridge assessment tools that incorporate structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, and scour measurements to provide rapid feedback for bridge closure decisions.IDOT-R27-SP50Ope

    DIN Spec 91345 RAMI 4.0 compliant data pipelining: An approach to support data understanding and data acquisition in smart manufacturing environments

    Today, data scientists in the manufacturing domain are confronted with a set of challenges associated to data acquisition as well as data processing including the extraction of valuable in-formation to support both, the work of the manufacturing equipment as well as the manufacturing processes behind it. One essential aspect related to data acquisition is the pipelining, including various commu-nication standards, protocols and technologies to save and transfer heterogenous data. These circumstances make it hard to understand, find, access and extract data from the sources depend-ing on use cases and applications. In order to support this data pipelining process, this thesis proposes the use of the semantic model. The selected semantic model should be able to describe smart manufacturing assets them-selves as well as to access their data along their life-cycle. As a matter of fact, there are many research contributions in smart manufacturing, which already came out with reference architectures or standards for semantic-based meta data descrip-tion or asset classification. This research builds upon these outcomes and introduces a novel se-mantic model-based data pipelining approach using as a basis the Reference Architecture Model for Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0).Hoje em dia, os cientistas de dados no domínio da manufatura são confrontados com várias normas, protocolos e tecnologias de comunicação para gravar, processar e transferir vários tipos de dados. Estas circunstâncias tornam difícil compreender, encontrar, aceder e extrair dados necessários para aplicações dependentes de casos de utilização, desde os equipamentos aos respectivos processos de manufatura. Um aspecto essencial poderia ser um processo de canalisação de dados incluindo vários normas de comunicação, protocolos e tecnologias para gravar e transferir dados. Uma solução para suporte deste processo, proposto por esta tese, é a aplicação de um modelo semântico que descreva os próprios recursos de manufactura inteligente e o acesso aos seus dados ao longo do seu ciclo de vida. Muitas das contribuições de investigação em manufatura inteligente já produziram arquitecturas de referência como a RAMI 4.0 ou normas para a descrição semântica de meta dados ou classificação de recursos. Esta investigação baseia-se nestas fontes externas e introduz um novo modelo semântico baseado no Modelo de Arquitectura de Referência para Indústria 4.0 (RAMI 4.0), em conformidade com a abordagem de canalisação de dados no domínio da produção inteligente como caso exemplar de utilização para permitir uma fácil exploração, compreensão, descoberta, selecção e extracção de dados
