    Inheritance as Implicit Coercion

    We present a method for providing semantic interpretations for languages with a type system featuring inheritance polymorphism. Our approach is illustrated on an extension of the language Fun of Cardelli and Wegner, which we interpret via a translation into an extended polymorphic lambda calculus. Our goal is to interpret inheritances in Fun via coercion functions which are definable in the target of the translation. Existing techniques in the theory of semantic domains can be then used to interpret the extended polymorphic lambda calculus, thus providing many models for the original language. This technique makes it possible to model a rich type discipline which includes parametric polymorphism and recursive types as well as inheritance. A central difficulty in providing interpretations for explicit type disciplines featuring inheritance in the sense discussed in this paper arises from the fact that programs can type-check in more than one way. Since interpretations follow the type-checking derivations, coherence theorems are required: that is, one must prove that the meaning of a program does not depend on the way it was type-checked. The proof of such theorems for our proposed interpretation are the basic technical results of this paper. Interestingly, proving coherence in the presence of recursive types, variants, and abstract types forced us to reexamine fundamental equational properties that arise in proof theory (in the form of commutative reductions) and domain theory (in the form of strict vs. non-strict functions)

    Workshop on Database Programming Languages

    These are the revised proceedings of the Workshop on Database Programming Languages held at Roscoff, Finistère, France in September of 1987. The last few years have seen an enormous activity in the development of new programming languages and new programming environments for databases. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together researchers from both databases and programming languages to discuss recent developments in the two areas in the hope of overcoming some of the obstacles that appear to prevent the construction of a uniform database programming environment. The workshop, which follows a previous workshop held in Appin, Scotland in 1985, was extremely successful. The organizers were delighted with both the quality and volume of the submissions for this meeting, and it was regrettable that more papers could not be accepted. Both the stimulating discussions and the excellent food and scenery of the Brittany coast made the meeting thoroughly enjoyable. There were three main foci for this workshop: the type systems suitable for databases (especially object-oriented and complex-object databases,) the representation and manipulation of persistent structures, and extensions to deductive databases that allow for more general and flexible programming. Many of the papers describe recent results, or work in progress, and are indicative of the latest research trends in database programming languages. The organizers are extremely grateful for the financial support given by CRAI (Italy), Altaïr (France) and AT&T (USA).     Serotonin receptor mechanisms in anti-depressant action

    Bibliography: leaves 221-270.Serotonin neurones have been implicated in the pathophysiology and treatment of clinical depression to a greater degree than any other neurotransmitter. Additionally, serotonin pathways may playa role in the pathophysiology and treatment of eating disorders, anxiety states and schizophrenia. Molecular biological studies have confirmed pharmacological evidence suggesting the existence of multiple serotonin receptor subtypes and the genes for these receptors, as well as that of the serotonin transporter, have common polymorphic variants. To investigate the effect of repeated treatment with selective serotonin fe-uptake inhibitors (SSRI's) on the function of central 5-HT2C receptors. To assess the effect of polymorphic variation in the 5-HT2c receptor and serotonin transporter on functional responses to selective pharmacological challenge. To determine whether polymorphic variation in the 5-HT receptor and serotonin transporter influence the clinical response of patients with major depression to treatment with serotonergic antidepressants. To assess the effect of repeated treatment with selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI's) on the function of central 5-HT2c receptors I used the 5-HT2C receptor agonist, m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP) as a 5-HT2c probe in a neuroendocrine challenge paradigm. I used the same approach to assess whether polymorphic variation in the 5-HT2c receptor (serine vs cysteine substitution) was associated with differences in functional response to 5-HT2C receptor challenge. I then studied whether polymorphic variation in the serotonin transporter promotor region (long versus short form) was associated with differing functional responses to acute challenge with clomipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant with a high affinity for the serotonin transporter. Finally, I studied whether either of these polymorphic variants influenced the clinical response of patients with major depression to treatment with SSRI's and clomipramine. SSRI treatment significantly lowered the sensitivity of 5-HT2c receptors as predicted from animal experimental studies. However polymorphic variation in the 5-HTzc receptor did not significantly influence functional responses to m-CPP challenge. In contrast polymorphic variation in the serotonin transporter was associated with differing neuroendocrine responses to acute clomipramine challenge with greater prolactin release being seen in subjects with the long polymorphic variant. Neither the 5-HTzc nor the transporter polymorphisms correlated with clinical response to SSRI and clomipramine treatment in patients with major depression. The ability of SSRI's to produce a functional down-regulation of 5-HTzc receptors may be relevant to certain of their therapeutic effects. Polymorphic variation in the 5-HT2c receptor (serine vs cysteine) seems unlikely to explain functional differences in responses to 5-HTzc receptor challenge or antidepressant responses to SSRI treatment. In contrast variation in the serotonin transporter promotor is associated with differing functional responses to acute serotonin re-uptake blockade. However, this did not correlate with clinical response to longer-term SSRI treatment

    Closing the gap between guidance and practice, an investigation of the relevance of design guidance to practitioners using object-oriented technologies

    This thesis investigates if object oriented guidance is relevant in practice, and how this affects software that is produced. This is achieved by surveying practitioners and studying how constructs such as interfaces and inheritance are used in open-source systems. Surveyed practitioners framed 'good design' in terms of impact on development and maintenance. Recognition of quality requires practitioner judgement (individually and as a group), and principles are valued over rules. Time constraints heighten sensitivity to the rework cost of poor design decisions. Examination of open source systems highlights the use of interface and inheritance. There is some evidence of 'textbook' use of these structures, and much use is simple. Outliers are widespread indicating a pragmatic approach. Design is found to reflect the pressures of practice - high-level decisions justify 'designed' structures and architecture, while uncertainty leads to deferred design decisions - simpler structures, repetition, and unconsolidated design. Sub-populations of structures can be identified which may represent common trade-offs. Useful insights are gained into practitioner attitude to design guidance.     This thesis describes datatype-generic programming, what it is, and how it is done in Scala. The thesis covers ways of thinking about datatype-generic programming and today's tools and libraries for datatype-generic programming in Scala and summarize how to use them. A new library called perspective for datatype-generic programming with higher kinded data is presented. How these libraries, including perspective, work together with sum types is be covered. Benchmarks are presented on both runtime and compile time performance of perspective and other libraries. perspective manages to keep up in performance with other libraries while offering faster code at the expense of longer compile time if a developer opts into this.     Adaptive object management for distributed systems

    This thesis describes an architecture supporting the management of pluggable software components and evaluates it against the requirement for an enterprise integration platform for the manufacturing and petrochemical industries. In a distributed environment, we need mechanisms to manage objects and their interactions. At the least, we must be able to create objects in different processes on different nodes; we must be able to link them together so that they can pass messages to each other across the network; and we must deliver their messages in a timely and reliable manner. Object based environments which support these services already exist, for example ANSAware(ANSA, 1989), DEC's Objectbroker(ACA,1992), Iona's Orbix(Orbix,1994)Yet such environments provide limited support for composing applications from pluggable components. Pluggability is the ability to install and configure a component into an environment dynamically when the component is used, without specifying static dependencies between components when they are produced. Pluggability is supported to a degree by dynamic binding. Components may be programmed to import references to other components and to explore their interfaces at runtime, without using static type dependencies. Yet thus overloads the component with the responsibility to explore bindings. What is still generally missing is an efficient general-purpose binding model for managing bindings between independently produced components. In addition, existing environments provide no clear strategy for dealing with fine grained objects. The overhead of runtime binding and remote messaging will severely reduce performance where there are a lot of objects with complex patterns of interaction. We need an adaptive approach to managing configurations of pluggable components according to the needs and constraints of the environment. Management is made difficult by embedding bindings in component implementations and by relying on strong typing as the only means of verifying and validating bindings. To solve these problems we have built a set of configuration tools on top of an existing distributed support environment. Specification tools facilitate the construction of independent pluggable components. Visual composition tools facilitate the configuration of components into applications and the verification of composite behaviours. A configuration model is constructed which maintains the environmental state. Adaptive management is made possible by changing the management policy according to this state. Such policy changes affect the location of objects, their bindings, and the choice of messaging system

    The Automated analysis of object-oriented designs

    This thesis concerns the use of software measures to assess the quality of object-oriented designs. It examines the ways in which design assessment can be assisted by measurement and the areas in which it can't. Other work in software measurement looks at defining and validating measures,or building prediction systems. This work is distinctive in that it examines the use of measures to help improve design quality during design time. To evaluate a design based on measurement results requires a means of relating measurement values to particular design problems or quality levels. Design heuristics were used to make this connection between measurement and quality. A survey was carried out to find suggestions for guidelines, rules and heuristics from the 00 design literature. This survey resulted in a catalogue of 288 suggestions for 00 design heuristics. The catalogue was structured around the 00 constructs to which the heuristics relate, and includes information on various heuristic attributes. This scheme is intended to allow suitable heuristics to be quickly located and correctly applied. Automation requires tool support. A tool was built which augmented the functionality available in existing sets, and taking input from multiple sources of design information (e.g., CASE tools and source code) and the described so far presents a potential method for automated design assessment provides the means of automation. An empirical study was then required to consider the efficacy of the method and evaluate the novel features of the tool. A case study was used to explore the approach taken by, and evaluate the effectiveness of, 15 subjects using measures and heuristics to assess the design of a small 00 system(IS classes). This study showed that semantic heuristics tended to highlight significant problems, but where attempts were made to automate these it often led to false problems being identified. This result, along with a previous finding that around half of quality criteria are not automatically assessable at design time, strongly suggeststhat people are still a necessary part of design assessment. The main result of the case study was that the subjects correctly identified 90% of the major design problems and were very positive about their experience of using measurement to support design assessment
