Disentangled Speech Embeddings using Cross-modal Self-supervision
The objective of this paper is to learn representations of speaker identity
without access to manually annotated data. To do so, we develop a
self-supervised learning objective that exploits the natural cross-modal
synchrony between faces and audio in video. The key idea behind our approach is
to tease apart--without annotation--the representations of linguistic content
and speaker identity. We construct a two-stream architecture which: (1) shares
low-level features common to both representations; and (2) provides a natural
mechanism for explicitly disentangling these factors, offering the potential
for greater generalisation to novel combinations of content and identity and
ultimately producing speaker identity representations that are more robust. We
train our method on a large-scale audio-visual dataset of talking heads `in the
wild', and demonstrate its efficacy by evaluating the learned speaker

Multimodal Content Analysis for Effective Advertisements on YouTube
The rapid advances in e-commerce and Web 2.0 technologies have greatly
increased the impact of commercial advertisements on the general public. As a
key enabling technology, a multitude of recommender systems exists which
analyzes user features and browsing patterns to recommend appealing
advertisements to users. In this work, we seek to study the characteristics or
attributes that characterize an effective advertisement and recommend a useful
set of features to aid the designing and production processes of commercial
advertisements. We analyze the temporal patterns from multimedia content of
advertisement videos including auditory, visual and textual components, and
study their individual roles and synergies in the success of an advertisement.
The objective of this work is then to measure the effectiveness of an
advertisement, and to recommend a useful set of features to advertisement
designers to make it more successful and approachable to users. Our proposed
framework employs the signal processing technique of cross modality feature
learning where data streams from different components are employed to train
separate neural network models and are then fused together to learn a shared
representation. Subsequently, a neural network model trained on this joint
feature embedding representation is utilized as a classifier to predict
advertisement effectiveness. We validate our approach using subjective ratings
from a dedicated user study, the sentiment strength of online viewer comments,
and a viewer opinion metric of the ratio of the Likes and Views received by

From Deterministic to Generative: Multi-Modal Stochastic RNNs for Video Captioning
Video captioning in essential is a complex natural process, which is affected
by various uncertainties stemming from video content, subjective judgment, etc.
In this paper we build on the recent progress in using encoder-decoder
framework for video captioning and address what we find to be a critical
deficiency of the existing methods, that most of the decoders propagate
deterministic hidden states. Such complex uncertainty cannot be modeled
efficiently by the deterministic models. In this paper, we propose a generative
approach, referred to as multi-modal stochastic RNNs networks (MS-RNN), which
models the uncertainty observed in the data using latent stochastic variables.
Therefore, MS-RNN can improve the performance of video captioning, and generate
multiple sentences to describe a video considering different random factors.
Specifically, a multi-modal LSTM (M-LSTM) is first proposed to interact with
both visual and textual features to capture a high-level representation. Then,
a backward stochastic LSTM (S-LSTM) is proposed to support uncertainty
propagation by introducing latent variables. Experimental results on the
challenging datasets MSVD and MSR-VTT show that our proposed MS-RNN approach
outperforms the state-of-the-art video captioning benchmarks
Deep Learning based Recommender System: A Survey and New Perspectives
With the ever-growing volume of online information, recommender systems have
been an effective strategy to overcome such information overload. The utility
of recommender systems cannot be overstated, given its widespread adoption in
many web applications, along with its potential impact to ameliorate many
problems related to over-choice. In recent years, deep learning has garnered
considerable interest in many research fields such as computer vision and
natural language processing, owing not only to stellar performance but also the
attractive property of learning feature representations from scratch. The
influence of deep learning is also pervasive, recently demonstrating its
effectiveness when applied to information retrieval and recommender systems
research. Evidently, the field of deep learning in recommender system is
flourishing. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent
research efforts on deep learning based recommender systems. More concretely,
we provide and devise a taxonomy of deep learning based recommendation models,
along with providing a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art. Finally,
we expand on current trends and provide new perspectives pertaining to this new
