    Neural Video Compression using GANs for Detail Synthesis and Propagation

    We present the first neural video compression method based on generative adversarial networks (GANs). Our approach significantly outperforms previous neural and non-neural video compression methods in a user study, setting a new state-of-the-art in visual quality for neural methods. We show that the GAN loss is crucial to obtain this high visual quality. Two components make the GAN loss effective: we i) synthesize detail by conditioning the generator on a latent extracted from the warped previous reconstruction to then ii) propagate this detail with high-quality flow. We find that user studies are required to compare methods, i.e., none of our quantitative metrics were able to predict all studies.     Discontinuity-Aware Base-Mesh Modeling of Depth for Scalable Multiview Image Synthesis and Compression

    This thesis is concerned with the challenge of deriving disparity from sparsely communicated depth for performing disparity-compensated view synthesis for compression and rendering of multiview images. The modeling of depth is essential for deducing disparity at view locations where depth is not available and is also critical for visibility reasoning and occlusion handling. This thesis first explores disparity derivation methods and disparity-compensated view synthesis approaches. Investigations reveal the merits of adopting a piece-wise continuous mesh description of depth for deriving disparity at target view locations to enable disparity-compensated backward warping of texture. Visibility information can be reasoned due to the correspondence relationship between views that a mesh model provides, while the connectivity of a mesh model assists in resolving depth occlusion. The recent JPEG 2000 Part-17 extension defines tools for scalable coding of discontinuous media using breakpoint-dependent DWT, where breakpoints describe discontinuity boundary geometry. This thesis proposes a method to efficiently reconstruct depth coded using JPEG 2000 Part-17 as a piece-wise continuous mesh, where discontinuities are driven by the encoded breakpoints. Results show that the proposed mesh can accurately represent decoded depth while its complexity scales along with decoded depth quality. The piece-wise continuous mesh model anchored at a single viewpoint or base-view can be augmented to form a multi-layered structure where the underlying layers carry depth information of regions that are occluded at the base-view. Such a consolidated mesh representation is termed a base-mesh model and can be projected to many viewpoints, to deduce complete disparity fields between any pair of views that are inherently consistent. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the base-mesh model in multiview synthesis and compression compared to other state-of-the-art methods, including the JPEG Pleno light field codec. The proposed base-mesh model departs greatly from conventional pixel-wise or block-wise depth models and their forward depth mapping for deriving disparity ingrained in existing multiview processing systems. When performing disparity-compensated view synthesis, there can be regions for which reference texture is unavailable, and inpainting is required. A new depth-guided texture inpainting algorithm is proposed to restore occluded texture in regions where depth information is either available or can be inferred using the base-mesh model

    Efficient Hybrid Image Warping for High Frame-Rate Stereoscopic Rendering

    Modern virtual reality simulations require a constant high-frame rate from the rendering engine. They may also require very low latency and stereo images. Previous rendering engines for virtual reality applications have exploited spatial and temporal coherence by using image-warping to re-use previous frames or to render a stereo pair at lower cost than running the full render pipeline twice. However these previous approaches have shown artifacts or have not scaled well with image size. We present a new image-warping algorithm that has several novel contributions: an adaptive grid generation algorithm for proxy geometry for image warping; a low-pass hole-filling algorithm to address un-occlusion; and support for transparent surfaces by efficiently ray casting transparent fragments stored in per-pixel linked lists of an A-Buffer. We evaluate our algorithm with a variety of challenging test cases. The results show that it achieves better quality image-warping than state-of-the-art techniques and that it can support transparent surfaces effectively. Finally, we show that our algorithm can achieve image warping at rates suitable for practical use in a variety of applications on modern virtual reality equipment

    IBVC: Interpolation-driven B-frame Video Compression

    Learned B-frame video compression aims to adopt bi-directional motion estimation and motion compensation (MEMC) coding for middle frame reconstruction. However, previous learned approaches often directly extend neural P-frame codecs to B-frame relying on bi-directional optical-flow estimation or video frame interpolation. They suffer from inaccurate quantized motions and inefficient motion compensation. To address these issues, we propose a simple yet effective structure called Interpolation-driven B-frame Video Compression (IBVC). Our approach only involves two major operations: video frame interpolation and artifact reduction compression. IBVC introduces a bit-rate free MEMC based on interpolation, which avoids optical-flow quantization and additional compression distortions. Later, to reduce duplicate bit-rate consumption and focus on unaligned artifacts, a residual guided masking encoder is deployed to adaptively select the meaningful contexts with interpolated multi-scale dependencies. In addition, a conditional spatio-temporal decoder is proposed to eliminate location errors and artifacts instead of using MEMC coding in other methods. The experimental results on B-frame coding demonstrate that IBVC has significant improvements compared to the relevant state-of-the-art methods. Meanwhile, our approach can save bit rates compared with the random access (RA) configuration of H.266 (VTM).     Multiscale Motion-Aware and Spatial-Temporal-Channel Contextual Coding Network for Learned Video Compression

    Recently, learned video compression has achieved exciting performance. Following the traditional hybrid prediction coding framework, most learned methods generally adopt the motion estimation motion compensation (MEMC) method to remove inter-frame redundancy. However, inaccurate motion vector (MV) usually lead to the distortion of reconstructed frame. In addition, most approaches ignore the spatial and channel redundancy. To solve above problems, we propose a motion-aware and spatial-temporal-channel contextual coding based video compression network (MASTC-VC), which learns the latent representation and uses variational autoencoders (VAEs) to capture the characteristics of intra-frame pixels and inter-frame motion. Specifically, we design a multiscale motion-aware module (MS-MAM) to estimate spatial-temporal-channel consistent motion vector by utilizing the multiscale motion prediction information in a coarse-to-fine way. On the top of it, we further propose a spatial-temporal-channel contextual module (STCCM), which explores the correlation of latent representation to reduce the bit consumption from spatial, temporal and channel aspects respectively. Comprehensive experiments show that our proposed MASTC-VC is surprior to previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods on three public benchmark datasets. More specifically, our method brings average 10.15\% BD-rate savings against H.265/HEVC (HM-16.20) in PSNR metric and average 23.93\% BD-rate savings against H.266/VVC (VTM-13.2) in MS-SSIM metric.Comment: 12pages,12 figure
