    Collision avoidance and dynamic modeling for wheeled mobile robots and industrial manipulators

    Collision Avoidance and Dynamic Modeling are key topics for researchers dealing with mobile and industrial robotics. A wide variety of algorithms, approaches and methodologies have been exploited, designed or adapted to tackle the problems of finding safe trajectories for mobile robots and industrial manipulators, and of calculating reliable dynamics models able to capture expected and possible also unexpected behaviors of robots. The knowledge of these two aspects and their potential is important to ensure the efficient and correct functioning of Industry 4.0 plants such as automated warehouses, autonomous surveillance systems and assembly lines. Collision avoidance is a crucial aspect to improve automation and safety, and to solve the problem of planning collision-free trajectories in systems composed of multiple autonomous agents such as unmanned mobile robots and manipulators with several degrees of freedom. A rigorous and accurate model explaining the dynamics of robots, is necessary to tackle tasks such as simulation, torque estimation, reduction of mechanical vibrations and design of control law

    Design and Experiments with a Low-Cost Single-Motor Modular Aquatic Robot

    We present a novel design for a low-cost robotic boat powered by a single actuator, useful for both modular and swarming applications. The boat uses the conservation of angular momentum and passive flippers to convert the motion of a single motor into an adjustable paddling motion for propulsion and steering. We develop design criteria for modularity and swarming and present a prototype implementing these criteria. We identify significant mechanical sensitivities with the presented design, theorize about the cause of the sensitivities, and present an improved design for future work.Comment: Accepted to the International Conference on Ubiquitous Robots (UR 2020). 8 page

    Coordinated Control of a Mobile Manipulator

    In this technical report, we investigate modeling, control, and coordination of mobile manipulators. A mobile manipulator in this study consists of a robotic manipulator and a mobile platform, with the manipulator being mounted atop the mobile platform. A mobile manipulator combines the dextrous manipulation capability offered by fixed-base manipulators and the mobility offered by mobile platforms. While mobile manipulators offer a tremendous potential for flexible material handling and other tasks, at the same time they bring about a number of challenging issues rather than simply increasing the structural complexity. First, combining a manipulator and a platform creates redundancy. Second, a wheeled mobile platform is subject to nonholonomic constraints. Third, there exists dynamic interaction between the manipulator and the mobile platform. Fourth, manipulators and mobile platforms have different bandwidths. Mobile platforms typically have slower dynamic response than manipulators. The objective of the thesis is to develop control algorithms that effectively coordinate manipulation and mobility of mobile manipulators. We begin with deriving the motion equations of mobile manipulators. The derivation presented here makes use of the existing motion equations of manipulators and mobile platforms, and simply introduces the velocity and acceleration dependent terms that account for the dynamic interaction between manipulators and mobile platforms. Since nonholonomic constraints play a critical role in control of mobile manipulators, we then study the control properties of nonholonomic dynamic systems, including feedback linearization and internal dynamics. Based on the newly proposed concept of preferred operating region, we develop a set of coordination algorithms for mobile manipulators. While the manipulator performs manipulation tasks, the mobile platform is controlled to always bring the configuration of the manipulator into a preferred operating region. The control algorithms for two types of tasks - dragging motion and following motion - are discussed in detail. The effects of dynamic interaction are also investigated. To verify the efficacy of the coordination algorithms, we conduct numerical simulations with representative task trajectories. Additionally, the control algorithms for the dragging motion and following motion have been implemented on an experimental mobile manipulator. The results from the simulation and experiment are presented to support the proposed control algorithms

    Pedestrian-Robot Interactions on Autonomous Crowd Navigation: Reactive Control Methods and Evaluation Metrics

    Autonomous navigation in highly populated areas remains a challenging task for robots because of the difficulty in guaranteeing safe interactions with pedestrians in unstructured situations. In this work, we present a crowd navigation control framework that delivers continuous obstacle avoidance and post-contact control evaluated on an autonomous personal mobility vehicle. We propose evaluation metrics for accounting efficiency, controller response and crowd interactions in natural crowds. We report the results of over 110 trials in different crowd types: sparse, flows, and mixed traffic, with low- (< 0.15 ppsm), mid- (< 0.65 ppsm), and high- (< 1 ppsm) pedestrian densities. We present comparative results between two low-level obstacle avoidance methods and a baseline of shared control. Results show a 10% drop in relative time to goal on the highest density tests, and no other efficiency metric decrease. Moreover, autonomous navigation showed to be comparable to shared-control navigation with a lower relative jerk and significantly higher fluency in commands indicating high compatibility with the crowd. We conclude that the reactive controller fulfils a necessary task of fast and continuous adaptation to crowd navigation, and it should be coupled with high-level planners for environmental and situational awareness.Comment: \c{opyright}IEEE All rights reserved. Mobile robots are widely used for surveillance, guidance, transportation and entertainment tasks, as well as medical applications. This Special Issue intends to concentrate on recent developments concerning mobile robots and the research surrounding them to enhance studies on the fundamental problems observed in the robots. Various multidisciplinary approaches and integrative contributions including navigation, learning and adaptation, networked system, biologically inspired robots and cognitive methods are welcome contributions to this Special Issue, both from a research and an application perspective

    Multi-stage warm started optimal motion planning for over-actuated mobile platforms

    This work presents a computationally lightweight motion planner for over-actuated platforms. For this purpose, a general state-space model for mobile platforms with several kinematic chains is defined, which considers dynamics, nonlinearities and constraints. The proposed motion planner is based on a sequential multi-stage approach that takes advantage of the warm start on each step. Firstly, a globally optimal and smooth 2D/3D trajectory is generated using the Fast Marching Method. This trajectory is fed as a warm start to a sequential linear quadratic regulator that is able to generate an optimal motion plan without constraints for all the platform actuators. Finally, a feasible motion plan is generated considering the constraints defined in the model. In this respect, the sequential linear quadratic regulator is employed again, taking the previously generated unconstrained motion plan as a warm start. The motion planner has been deployed into the Exomars Testing Rover of the European Space Agency. This rover is an Ackermann-capable planetary exploration testbed that is equipped with a robotic arm. Several experiments were carried out demonstrating that the proposed approach speeds up the computation time and increases the success ratio for a martian sample retrieval mission, which can be considered as a representative use case of goal-constrained trajectory generation for an over-actuated mobile platform.This work has been partially funded by the EU-H2020 project entitled “Cooperative Robots for Extreme Environments” (CoRob-X) under grant agreement: 101004130.     An important topic in the field of Multi Robot Systems focuses on motion coordination and synchronization for formation keeping. Although several works have addressed such problem, little attention has been devoted to study the computational complexity within the framework of large-scale systems. This paper presents our current work on how to achieve high computational performance for systems composed by a large number of robots that must fulfill with a marching and formation task. A scalable Multi-Processor Parallel Architecture is introduced with the purpose of achieving scalability, i.e., computation time of O(log2n) for a n-robots system. Our architecture has been tested onto a multi-processor system and validated against several simulations testing
