    Wearable Communications in 5G: Challenges and Enabling Technologies

    As wearable devices become more ingrained in our daily lives, traditional communication networks primarily designed for human being-oriented applications are facing tremendous challenges. The upcoming 5G wireless system aims to support unprecedented high capacity, low latency, and massive connectivity. In this article, we evaluate key challenges in wearable communications. A cloud/edge communication architecture that integrates the cloud radio access network, software defined network, device to device communications, and cloud/edge technologies is presented. Computation offloading enabled by this multi-layer communications architecture can offload computation-excessive and latency-stringent applications to nearby devices through device to device communications or to nearby edge nodes through cellular or other wireless technologies. Critical issues faced by wearable communications such as short battery life, limited computing capability, and stringent latency can be greatly alleviated by this cloud/edge architecture. Together with the presented architecture, current transmission and networking technologies, including non-orthogonal multiple access, mobile edge computing, and energy harvesting, can greatly enhance the performance of wearable communication in terms of spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, latency, and connectivity.Comment: This work has been accepted by IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazin

    Mobile Edge Computing via a UAV-Mounted Cloudlet: Optimization of Bit Allocation and Path Planning

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been recently considered as means to provide enhanced coverage or relaying services to mobile users (MUs) in wireless systems with limited or no infrastructure. In this paper, a UAV-based mobile cloud computing system is studied in which a moving UAV is endowed with computing capabilities to offer computation offloading opportunities to MUs with limited local processing capabilities. The system aims at minimizing the total mobile energy consumption while satisfying quality of service requirements of the offloaded mobile application. Offloading is enabled by uplink and downlink communications between the mobile devices and the UAV that take place by means of frequency division duplex (FDD) via orthogonal or non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes. The problem of jointly optimizing the bit allocation for uplink and downlink communication as well as for computing at the UAV, along with the cloudlet's trajectory under latency and UAV's energy budget constraints is formulated and addressed by leveraging successive convex approximation (SCA) strategies. Numerical results demonstrate the significant energy savings that can be accrued by means of the proposed joint optimization of bit allocation and cloudlet's trajectory as compared to local mobile execution as well as to partial optimization approaches that design only the bit allocation or the cloudlet's trajectory.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technolog

    Social-Mobility-Aware Joint Communication and Computation Resource Management in NOMA-Enabled Vehicular Networks

    The existing computation and communication (2C) optimization schemes for vehicular edge computing (VEC) networks mainly focus on the physical domain without considering the influence from the social domain. This may greatly limit the potential of task offloading, making it difficult to fully boom the task offloading rate with given power, resulting in low energy efficiency (EE). To address the issue, this letter devotes itself to investigate social-mobility-aware VEC framework and proposes a novel EE-oriented 2C assignment scheme. In doing so, we assume that the task vehicular user (T-VU) can offload computation tasks to the service vehicular user (S-VU) and the road side unit (RSU) by non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). An optimization problem is formulated to jointly assign the 2C resources to maximize the system EE, which turns out to be a mixed integer non-convex objective function. To solve the problem, we transform it into separated computation and communication resource allocation subproblems. Dealing with the first subproblem, we propose a social-mobility-aware edge server selection and task splitting algorithm (SM-SSTSA) to achieve edge server selection and task splitting. Then, by solving the second subproblem, the power allocation and spectrum assignment solutions are obtained utilizing a tightening lower bound method and a Kuhn-Munkres algorithm. Finally, we solve the original problem through an iterative method. Simulation results demonstrate the superior EE performance of the proposed scheme

    V2X Meets NOMA: Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for 5G Enabled Vehicular Networks

    Benefited from the widely deployed infrastructure, the LTE network has recently been considered as a promising candidate to support the vehicle-to-everything (V2X) services. However, with a massive number of devices accessing the V2X network in the future, the conventional OFDM-based LTE network faces the congestion issues due to its low efficiency of orthogonal access, resulting in significant access delay and posing a great challenge especially to safety-critical applications. The non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique has been well recognized as an effective solution for the future 5G cellular networks to provide broadband communications and massive connectivity. In this article, we investigate the applicability of NOMA in supporting cellular V2X services to achieve low latency and high reliability. Starting with a basic V2X unicast system, a novel NOMA-based scheme is proposed to tackle the technical hurdles in designing high spectral efficient scheduling and resource allocation schemes in the ultra dense topology. We then extend it to a more general V2X broadcasting system.
