    Unambiguous Acquisition and Tracking Technique for General BOC Signals

    This article presents a new unambiguous acquisition and tracking technique for general Binary Offset Carrier (BOC) ranging signals, which will be used in modern GPS, European Galileo system and Chinese BeiDou system. The test criterion employed in this technique is based on a synthesized correlation function which completely removes positive side peaks while keeping the sharp main peak. Simulation results indicate that the proposed technique completely removes the ambiguity threat in the acquisition process while maintaining relatively higher acquisition performance for low order BOC signals. The potential false lock points in the tracking phase for any order BOC signals are avoided by using the proposed method. Impacts of thermal noise and multipath on the proposed technique are investigated; the simulation results show that the new method allows the removal of false lock points with slightly degraded tracking performance. In addition, this method is convenient to implement via logic circuits

    Efficient Delay Tracking Methods with Sidelobes Cancellation for BOC-Modulated Signals

    In positioning applications, where the line of sight (LOS) is needed with high accuracy, the accurate delay estimation is an important task. The new satellite-based positioning systems, such as Galileo and modernized GPS, will use a new modulation type, that is, the binary offset carrier (BOC) modulation. This type of modulation creates multiple peaks (ambiguities) in the envelope of the correlation function, and thus triggers new challenges in the delay-frequency acquisition and tracking stages. Moreover, the properties of BOC-modulated signals are yet not well studied in the context of fading multipath channels. In this paper, sidelobe cancellation techniques are applied with various tracking structures in order to remove or diminish the side peaks, while keeping a sharp and narrow main lobe, thus allowing a better tracking. Five sidelobe cancellation methods (SCM) are proposed and studied: SCM with interference cancellation (IC), SCM with narrow correlator, SCM with high-resolution correlator (HRC), SCM with differential correlation (DC), and SCM with threshold. Compared to other delay tracking methods, the proposed SCM approaches have the advantage that they can be applied to any sine or cosine BOC-modulated signal. We analyze the performances of various tracking techniques in the presence of fading multipath channels and we compare them with other methods existing in the literature. The SCM approaches bring improvement also in scenarios with closely-spaced paths, which are the most problematic from the accurate positioning point of view.</p

    Analyzing Code Tracking Algorithms for Galileo Open Service Signal

    The ever-increasing public interest on location and positioning services has originated a demand for higher performance Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs). Galileo Open Service (OS) signal, part of the European contribution to future GNSS, was designed to respond to the above demand. In all GNSSs, the estimation with high accuracy of the Line-Of-Sight (LOS) delay is a prerequisite. The Delay Lock Loops (DLLs) and their enhanced variants (i.e., feed-back code tracking loops) are the structures of choice for the commercial GNSS receivers, but their performance in severe multipath scenarios is still rather limited. In addition, the new satellite positioning system proposals specify the use of a new modulation, the Binary Offset Carrier (BOC) modulation, which triggers a new challenge in the code tracking stage. Therefore, in order to meet this emerging challenge and to improve the accuracy of the delay estimation in severe multipath scenarios, this thesis analyzes feed-back as well as feed-forward code tracking algorithms and proposes a novel algorithm, namely Peak Tracking (PT), which is a combination of both feed-back and feed-forward structures and utilizes the advantages inherent in these structures. In this thesis, the code tracking algorithms are studied and analyzed for Sine BOC (SinBOC) modulated Galileo OS signal for various multipath profiles in Rayleigh fading channel model. The performance of the analyzed algorithms are measured in terms of various well-known criteria such as Root-Mean-Square-Error (RMSE), Mean-Time-to-Lose Lock (MTLL), delay error variance and Multipath Error Envelopes (MEEs). The simulation results show that the proposed PT algorithm outperforms all other analyzed algorithms in various multipath profiles in good Carrier-to-Noise-Ratios (CNRs). The simulation results are compared with the theoretical Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) and the comparison shows that the delay error variance for PT algorithm approaches the theoretical limit with the increase in CNR. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can be considered as an excellent candidate for implementation in future Galileo receivers, especially when tracking accuracy is a concern. /Kir1

    Signal design and Theoretical bounds for Time-Of-Arrival estimation in GNSS applications

    Positioning accuracy in satellite navigation systems depends on time-delay estimation (TDE) between satellite transmitted codes and local receiver replicas. This thesis is specifically focused on the problem of improving time delay estimation (TDE) accuracy of SS signals, focusing on the fundamental issue of estimation theory and on the properties of the transmitted signal. TDE fundamentals limits are deeply investigated, encompassing the Cram´er Rao Bound and the Ziv-Zakai Bound, and their modified versions to lighten their computation in presence of unknown parameters, in addiction to the time delay. The adoption of the ZZB as benchmark for both acquisition and tracking stage performance is addressed, analyzing innovative or standard signalling waveforms such as Galileo SIS. The main contributions of this thesis are dealt with the analysis of applicability of spread spectrum continuous phase-modulated (SS-CPM) and spread spectrum filtered multitone (SS-FMT) as ranging signals. A special subset of CPM, labeled as “Semi-integer MSK (SiMSK)” obtained by properly setting the modulation parameters, is revealed easily adaptable to the requirements on emissions, intrinsically constant envelope and spectral efficient, while still allowing good tracking performance. Besides, an ad hoc encoding of the SS-SiMSK enables the design of a constant envelope signal bearing two different rate services, without any approximation at the transmitter side. The analysis of the multicarrier (MC) signal revealed the high degree of freedom in its design, proposing the special Filtered Multitone (FMT) modulation as possible candidate for ranging signals. The strictly bandlimited property and the full spectral flexibility possessed by the FMT are exploited in some cases of study to adapt the system to channel conditions or in particular to emulate existing or innovative spectra. For both the SSCPM and SS-FMT modulation schemes investigated, some estimation algorithms are tested and their performance are compared to the correspondent theoretical bound

    Multipath Propagation, Mitigation and Monitoring in the Light of Galileo and the Modernized GPS

    Among the numerous potential sources of GNSS signal degradation, multipath takes on a prominent position. Unlike other errors like ionospheric or tropospheric path delays which can be modeled or significantly reduced by differential techniques, multipath influences cannot be mitigated by such approaches. Although a lot of multipath mitigation techniques have been proposed and developed in the past among them many receiver internal approaches using special signal processing algorithms multipath (especially multipath with small geometric path delays) still remains a major error source. This is why multipath has been a major design driver for the definition of the Galileo signal structure carried out in the past years and the subsequent signal optimization activities. This thesis tries to provide a broad and comprehensive insight into various aspects of multipath propagation, mitigation and monitoring (without claiming to be exhaustive). It contains an overview of the most important aspects of multipath propagation, including the discussion of different types of multipath signals (e.g. specular vs. diffuse multipath, satellite vs. receiver multipath or hardware-induced multipath), typical characteristics such as periodic signal variations whose frequency depends on the satellite-antenna-reflector geometry and the impact on the signal tracking process within a GNSS receiver. A large part of this thesis is dedicated to aspects of multipath mitigation, first providing a summary of the most common multipath mitigation techniques with a special focus on receiver-internal approaches such as the narrow correlation technique, double-delta correlator implementations, the Early-Late Slope (ELS) technique or Early/Early tracking implementations. However, other mitigation approaches such as using arrays of closely spaced antennas or multipath-limiting antennas are discussed as well. Some of these techniques are used for subsequent multipath performance analyses considering signals of the (modernized) GPS and Galileo. These analyses base on a new methodology to estimate typical and meaningful multipath errors making use of multipath error envelopes that are scaled in a suitable way to account for different multipath environments. It will be shown that typical (mean) multipath errors can be derived from these scaled envelopes by computation of the envelopes running average and that these mean multipath errors are of the same order as multipath errors obtained from complex statistical channel models. Another part of this thesis covers various aspects of multipath detection and monitoring. First, current techniques for multipath detection and monitoring are described and discussed with respect to their benefits and drawbacks or their real-time capability. Among the considered approaches are techniques like code minus carrier monitoring, SNR monitoring, the use of differenced observations or spectral and wavelet analysis. Following this introductory overview, a completely new approach for real-time multipath monitoring by processing multi-correlator observations will be introduced. Previously being used primarily for the detection of Evil Waveforms (signal failures that originate from a malfunction of the satellites signal generation and transmission hardware), the same basic observations (linear combinations of correlator outputs) can be used for the development of a multi-correlator-based real-time multipath monitoring system. The objective is to provide the user with instant information whether or not a signal is affected by multipath. The proposed monitoring scheme has been implemented in the form of a Matlab-based software called RTMM (Real-Time Multipath Monitor) which has been used to verify the monitoring approach and to determine its sensitivity.Die Qualität eines Satellitensignals wird durch eine Vielzahl potenzieller Fehlerquellen negativ beeinflusst. Neben atmosphärischen Einflüssen tragen Mehrwegeeinflüsse einen wesentlichen Anteil zum Gesamtfehlerbudget der Satellitennavigation bei. Während eine ganze Reihe von Fehlereinflüssen durch geeignete Modellierung oder differenzielle Verfahren deutlich reduziert werden können, ist dies durch die räumliche Dekorrelation der Mehrwegeeffekte nicht möglich. Obwohl in der Vergangenheit eine Vielzahl von Verfahren zur Mehrwegereduzierung vorgeschlagen und entwickelt wurden, stellen Mehrwegesignale noch immer eine wesentliche, stets zu berücksichtigende Fehlerquelle dar. Aus diesem Grund spielten die zu erwartenden Mehrwegefehler auch eine sehr wichtige Rolle im Zuge der Definition sowie der Optimierung der Galileo-Signalstruktur und können somit als wesentliches Design-Kriterium angesehen werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit gibt einen umfassenden Einblick in verschiedene Aspekte der Mehrwegeausbreitung, -reduzierung sowie der Detektion und der Überwachung auftretender Mehrwegeeffekte. Die Arbeit beschreibt zunächst die wichtigsten Aspekte der Mehrwegeausbreitung, wobei beispielsweise unterschiedliche Arten von Reflexionen oder unterschiedliche Entstehungsarten ebenso diskutiert werden wie typische Auswirkungen von Mehrwegesignalen wie die Entstehung periodischer Signalvariationen. Solche Signalvariationen sind in starkem Maße abhängig von der durch die Satellitenposition, dem Antennenstandpunkt und der Lage des Reflexionspunktes definierten Geometrie. Die Frequenz dieser Signalvariationen wird für unterschiedliche geometrische Verhältnisse berechnet. Zudem werden der Einfluss bzw. die Auswirkungen einer Mehrwegeausbreitung auf den Signalverarbeitungsprozess in einem GNSS Empfänger aufgezeigt. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit bilden die derzeit gebräuchlichen Methoden zur Reduzierung von Mehrwegeeinflüssen. Dabei werden zunächst die wichtigsten empfängerinternen Ansätze vorgestellt. Aber auch Methoden wie die Verwendung von Antennenarrays oder spezieller Antennen bleiben nicht unberücksichtigt. Einige dieser Methoden bilden im Folgenden die Grundlage für die Bestimmung von typischen Mehrwegefehlern. Dazu wird eine neuartige Methodik vorgestellt, um aus Hüllkurven des Mehrwegefehlers aussagekräftige mittlere Mehrwegefehler zu bestimmen. Hierzu werden die Hüllkurven mit Hilfe einiger aus statistischen Kanalmodellen abgeleiteter Parameter in geeigneter Weise skaliert, um unterschiedlichen Mehrwegeumgebungen Rechnung zu tragen. Es wird gezeigt, dass die mit Hilfe dieser relativ einfachen und effizienten Methode ermittelten Mehrwegefehler in derselben Größenordnung liegen wie die aus komplexen statistischen Kanalmodellen ermittelten Fehler. Einen weiteren Themenkomplex stellen Methoden zur Detektion und zum Monitoring von Mehrwegeeinflüssen dar. Dabei werden zunächst derzeit verwendete Ansätze vorgestellt und hinsichtlich ihrer Vor- und Nachteile sowie hinsichtlich ihrer Echtzeitfähigkeit diskutiert. In Anschluss daran wird ein neuartiger Ansatz zur Detektion und zum Monitoring von Mehrwegesignalen in Echtzeit vorgestellt, der auf der Auswertung von Multikorrelatorbeobachtungen basiert. Ziel dieser Entwicklung ist es, einen potenziellen Nutzer sofort darüber informieren zu können, wenn ein Signal mit Mehrwegefehlern behaftet ist. Der vorgeschlagene Ansatz wurde in Form einer Matlab-basierten implementiert, welche im Folgenden zur Verifizierung und zur Bestimmung der Empfindlichkeit des Verfahrens verwendet wird

    Optimization of demodulation performance of the GPS and GALILEO navigation messages

    La performance de démodulation des signaux GNSS existants, GPS L1 C/A, L2C ou L5, est satisfaisante en environnements ouverts où le C/N0 disponible est assez élevé. Cependant, en milieu urbain, le niveau de C/N0 du signal reçu est souvent très bas et est affecté de variations rapides qui peuvent nuire la démodulation des messages GNSS. Donc, car les applications du marché de masse sont appelées à être déployées dans ces environnements, il est nécessaire d'étudier et de chercher des méthodes de démodulation/décodage qui améliorent la performance de démodulation des messages GNSS dans ces environnements. Il est aussi nécessaire de considérer les nouveaux signaux GPS L1C et GALILEO E1. Ces signaux doivent fournir un service de positionnement par satellite dans tout type d'environnement, et spécifiquement en milieu urbain. Ainsi, cette thèse analyse aussi les performances de démodulation des nouveaux signaux GNSS tels que définis dans les documents publics actuels. De plus, de nouvelles structures de message GALILEO E1 sont proposées et analysées afin d'optimiser la performance de démodulation ainsi que la quantité d'information diffusée. En conséquence, le but principal de cette thèse est d'analyser et améliorer la performance de démodulation des signaux GNSS ouverts au public, spécifiquement en milieu urbain, et de proposer de nouvelles structures de messages de navigation pour GALILEO E1. La structure détaillée des chapitres de cette thèse est donnée ci-après. En premier lieu, le sujet de cette thèse est introduit, ses contributions originales sont mises en avant, et le plan du rapport est présenté. Dans le 2ième chapitre, la thèse décrit la structure actuelle des signaux GNSS analysés, en se concentrant sur la structure du message de navigation, les codages canal implantés et leurs techniques de décodage. Dans le 3ième chapitre, deux types de modèles de canal de propagation sont présentés pour deux différents types de scénarios. D'un côté, un canal AWGN est choisi pour modéliser les environnements ouverts. De l'autre côté, le modèle mathématique de Perez-Fontan d'un canal mobile est choisi pour représenter les environnements urbains et indoor. Dans le 4ième chapitre, une tentative pour effectuer une prédiction binaire d'une partie du message de navigation GPS L1 C/A est présentée. La prédiction est essayée en utilisant les almanachs GPS L1 C/A, grâce à un programme de prédiction à long terme fourni par TAS-F, et des méthodes de traitement du signal: estimation spectrale, méthode de PRONY et réseau de neurones. Dans le 5ème chapitre, des améliorations à la performance de démodulation du message de GPS L2C et L5 sont apportées en utilisant leur codage canal de manière non traditionnelle. Deux méthodes sont analysées. La première méthode consiste à combiner les codages canal internes et externes du message afin de corriger davantage de mots reçus. La deuxième méthode consiste à utiliser les probabilités des données d'éphémérides afin d'améliorer le décodage traditionnel de Viterbi. Dans le 6ième chapitre, la performance de démodulation des messages de GPS L1C et du Open Service GALILEO E1 est analysée dans différents environnements. D'abord, une étude de la structure de ces deux signaux est présentée pour déterminer le C/N0 du signal utile reçu dans un canal AWGN. Puis, la performance de démodulation de ces signaux est analysée grâce à des simulations dans différents environnements, avec un récepteur se déplaçant à différentes vitesses et avec différentes techniques d'estimation de la phase porteuse du signal. ABSTRACT : The demodulation performance achieved by any of the existing GPS signals, L1 C/A, L2C or L5, is satisfactory in open environments where the available C/N0 is quite high. However, in indoor/urban environments, the C/N0 level of the received signal is often very low and suffers fast variations which can further affect the GNSS messages demodulation. Therefore, since the mass-market applications being designed nowadays are aimed at these environments, it is necessary to study and to search alternative demodulation/decoding methods which improve the GNSS messages demodulation performance in these environments. Moreover, new GNSS signals recently developed, such as GPS L1C and GALILEO E1, must also be considered. These signals aim at providing satellite navigation positioning service in any kind of environment, giving special attention to indoor and urban environments. Therefore, the demodulation performances of the new GNSS signals as they are defined in the current public documents is also analysed. Moreover, new GALILEO E1 message structures are proposed and analysed in order to optimize the demodulation performance as well as the quantity of broadcasted information. Therefore, the main goal of this dissertation is to analyse and to improve the demodulation performance of the current open GNSS signals, specifically in indoor and urban environments, and to propose new navigation message structures for GALILEO E1. A detailed structure of this dissertation sections is given next. First, the subject of this thesis is introduced, original contributions are highlighted, and the outline of the report is presented. Second, this dissertation begins by a description of the current structure of the different analysed GNSS signals, paying special attention to the navigation message structure, implemented channel code and their decoding techniques. In the third section, two types of transmission channel models are presented for two different types of environments. On one hand, an AWGN channel is used to model the signal transmission in an open environments. On the other hand, the choice of a specific mobile channel, the Perez-Fontan channel model, is chosen to model the signal transmission in an urban environment. In the fourth section, a tentative to make a binary prediction of the broadcasted satellite ephemeris of the GPS L1 C/A navigation message is presented. The prediction is attempted using the GPS L1 C/A almanacs data, a long term orbital prediction program provided by TAS-F, and some signal processing methods: spectral estimation, the PRONY method, and a neural network. In the fifth section, improvements to the GPS L2C and GPS L5 navigation message demodulation performance are brought by using their channel codes in a non-traditional way. Two methods are inspected. The first method consists in sharing information between the message inner and outer channel codes in order to correct more received words. The second method consists in using the ephemeris data probabilities in order to improve the traditional Viterbi decoding. In the sixth section, the GPS L1C and GALILEO E1 Open Service demodulation performance is analysed in different environments. First, a brief study of the structure of both signals to determine the received C/N0 in an AWGN channel is presented. Second, their demodulation performance is analysed through simulations in different environments, with different receiver speeds and signal carrier phase estimation techniques
