A Survey on Evolutionary Computation for Computer Vision and Image Analysis: Past, Present, and Future Trends
Computer vision (CV) is a big and important field
in artificial intelligence covering a wide range of applications.
Image analysis is a major task in CV aiming to extract, analyse
and understand the visual content of images. However, imagerelated
tasks are very challenging due to many factors, e.g., high
variations across images, high dimensionality, domain expertise
requirement, and image distortions. Evolutionary computation
(EC) approaches have been widely used for image analysis with
significant achievement. However, there is no comprehensive
survey of existing EC approaches to image analysis. To fill
this gap, this paper provides a comprehensive survey covering
all essential EC approaches to important image analysis tasks
including edge detection, image segmentation, image feature
analysis, image classification, object detection, and others. This
survey aims to provide a better understanding of evolutionary
computer vision (ECV) by discussing the contributions of different
approaches and exploring how and why EC is used for
CV and image analysis. The applications, challenges, issues, and
trends associated to this research field are also discussed and
summarised to provide further guidelines and opportunities for
future research
A new edge detection approach via neutrosophy based on maximum norm entropy
It is a quite important step to find object edges in applications such as object recognition, classification and segmentation. Therefore, the edge detection algorithm to be used directly influences the performance of these applications. In this study, a new edge detection method based on Neutrosophic Set (NS) structure via using maximum norm entropy (EDA-NMNE) is proposed. Many experts and intelligence systems, including the fuzzy system, do not satisfactorily succeed in resolving indeterminacies and deficiencies. However, in the NS approach, problems are solved by dividing them into True (T), False (F) and Indeterminacy (I) subsets. In addition, because the approach has a powerful algorithmic structure, NS’s conditions with indeterminate and missing situations can be solved successfully
Enhanced Ai-Based Machine Learning Model for an Accurate Segmentation and Classification Methods
Phone Laser Scanner becomes the versatile sensor module that is premised on Lamp Identification and Spanning methodology and is used in a spectrum of uses. There are several prior editorials in the literary works that concentrate on the implementations or attributes of these processes; even so, evaluations of all those inventive computational techniques reported in the literature have not even been performed in the required thickness. At ToAT that finish, we examine and summarize the latest advances in Artificial Intelligence based machine learning data processing approaches such as extracting features, fragmentation, machine vision, and categorization. In this survey, we have reviewed total 48 papers based on an enhanced AI based machine learning model for accurate classification and segmentation methods. Here, we have reviewed the sections on segmentation and classification of images based on machine learning models
Improved Otsu and Kapur approach for white blood cells segmentation based on LebTLBO optimization for the detection of Leukemia.
The diagnosis of leukemia involves the detection of the abnormal characteristics of blood cells by a trained pathologist. Currently, this is done manually by observing the morphological characteristics of white blood cells in the microscopic images. Though there are some equipment- based and chemical-based tests available, the use and adaptation of the automated computer vision-based system is still an issue. There are certain software frameworks available in the literature; however, they are still not being adopted commercially. So there is a need for an automated and software- based framework for the detection of leukemia. In software-based detection, segmentation is the first critical stage that outputs the region of interest for further accurate diagnosis. Therefore, this paper explores an efficient and hybrid segmentation that proposes a more efficient and effective system for leukemia diagnosis. A very popular publicly available database, the acute lymphoblastic leukemia image database (ALL-IDB), is used in this research. First, the images are pre-processed and segmentation is done using Multilevel thresholding with Otsu and Kapur methods. To further optimize the segmentation performance, the Learning enthusiasm-based teaching-learning-based optimization (LebTLBO) algorithm is employed. Different metrics are used for measuring the system performance. A comparative analysis of the proposed methodology is done with existing benchmarks methods. The proposed approach has proven to be better than earlier techniques with measuring parameters of PSNR and Similarity index. The result shows a significant improvement in the performance measures with optimizing threshold algorithms and the LebTLBO technique
Handwritten Character Recognition of South Indian Scripts: A Review
Handwritten character recognition is always a frontier area of research in
the field of pattern recognition and image processing and there is a large
demand for OCR on hand written documents. Even though, sufficient studies have
performed in foreign scripts like Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters, only
a very few work can be traced for handwritten character recognition of Indian
scripts especially for the South Indian scripts. This paper provides an
overview of offline handwritten character recognition in South Indian Scripts,
namely Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telungu.Comment: Paper presented on the "National Conference on Indian Language

Analysis of a robust edge detection system in different color spaces using color and depth images
Edge detection is very important technique to reveal significant areas in the digital image, which could aids the feature extraction techniques. In fact it is possible to remove un-necessary parts from image, using edge detection. A lot of edge detection techniques has been made already, but we propose a robust evolutionary based system to extract the vital parts of the image. System is based on a lot of pre and post-processing techniques such as filters and morphological operations, and applying modified Ant Colony Optimization edge detection method to the image. The main goal is to test the system on different color spaces, and calculate the system’s performance. Another novel aspect of the research is using depth images along with color ones, which depth data is acquired by Kinect V.2 in validation part, to understand edge detection concept better in depth data. System is going to be tested with 10 benchmark test images for color and 5 images for depth format, and validate using 7 Image Quality Assessment factors such as Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio, Mean Squared Error, Structural Similarity and more (mostly related to edges) for prove, in different color spaces and compared with other famous edge detection methods in same condition. Also for evaluating the robustness of the system, some types of noises such as Gaussian, Salt and pepper, Poisson and Speckle are added to images, to shows proposed system power in any condition. The goal is reaching to best edges possible and to do this, more computation is needed, which increases run time computation just a bit more. But with today’s systems this time is decreased to minimum, which is worth it to make such a system. Acquired results are so promising and satisfactory in compare with other methods available in validation section of the paper
Human treelike tubular structure segmentation: A comprehensive review and future perspectives
Various structures in human physiology follow a treelike morphology, which often expresses complexity at very fine scales. Examples of such structures are intrathoracic airways, retinal blood vessels, and hepatic blood vessels. Large collections of 2D and 3D images have been made available by medical imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and ultrasound in which the spatial arrangement can be observed. Segmentation of these structures in medical imaging is of great importance since the analysis of the structure provides insights into disease diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognosis. Manually labelling extensive data by radiologists is often time-consuming and error-prone. As a result, automated or semi-automated computational models have become a popular research field of medical imaging in the past two decades, and many have been developed to date. In this survey, we aim to provide a comprehensive review of currently publicly available datasets, segmentation algorithms, and evaluation metrics. In addition, current challenges and future research directions are discussed
Hybrid ACO and SVM algorithm for pattern classification
Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is a metaheuristic algorithm that can be used to
solve a variety of combinatorial optimization problems. A new direction for ACO is to optimize continuous and mixed (discrete and continuous) variables. Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a pattern classification approach originated from statistical approaches. However, SVM suffers two main problems which include feature subset selection and parameter tuning. Most approaches related to tuning SVM parameters discretize the continuous value of the parameters which will give a negative effect on the classification performance. This study presents four algorithms for tuning the
SVM parameters and selecting feature subset which improved SVM classification accuracy with smaller size of feature subset. This is achieved by performing the SVM parameters’ tuning and feature subset selection processes simultaneously. Hybridization algorithms between ACO and SVM techniques were proposed. The first two algorithms, ACOR-SVM and IACOR-SVM, tune the SVM parameters while
the second two algorithms, ACOMV-R-SVM and IACOMV-R-SVM, tune the SVM parameters and select the feature subset simultaneously. Ten benchmark datasets from University of California, Irvine, were used in the experiments to validate the performance of the proposed algorithms. Experimental results obtained from the proposed algorithms are better when compared with other approaches in terms of classification accuracy and size of the feature subset. The average classification
accuracies for the ACOR-SVM, IACOR-SVM, ACOMV-R and IACOMV-R algorithms are 94.73%, 95.86%, 97.37% and 98.1% respectively. The average size of feature subset is eight for the ACOR-SVM and IACOR-SVM algorithms and four for the ACOMV-R and IACOMV-R algorithms. This study contributes to a new direction for ACO that can deal with continuous and mixed-variable ACO
