    Thermal error modelling of machine tools based on ANFIS with fuzzy c-means clustering using a thermal imaging camera

    Thermal errors are often quoted as being the largest contributor to CNC machine tool errors, but they can be effectively reduced using error compensation. The performance of a thermal error compensation system depends on the accuracy and robustness of the thermal error model and the quality of the inputs to the model. The location of temperature measurement must provide a representative measurement of the change in temperature that will affect the machine structure. The number of sensors and their locations are not always intuitive and the time required to identify the optimal locations is often prohibitive, resulting in compromise and poor results. In this paper, a new intelligent compensation system for reducing thermal errors of machine tools using data obtained from a thermal imaging camera is introduced. Different groups of key temperature points were identified from thermal images using a novel schema based on a Grey model GM (0, N) and Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering method. An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System with Fuzzy c-means clustering (FCM-ANFIS) was employed to design the thermal prediction model. In order to optimise the approach, a parametric study was carried out by changing the number of inputs and number of membership functions to the FCM-ANFIS model, and comparing the relative robustness of the designs. According to the results, the FCM-ANFIS model with four inputs and six membership functions achieves the best performance in terms of the accuracy of its predictive ability. The residual value of the model is smaller than ± 2 Όm, which represents a 95% reduction in the thermally-induced error on the machine. Finally, the proposed method is shown to compare favourably against an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model

    VHDL-AMS based genetic optimisation of fuzzy logic controllers

    Purpose – This paper presents a VHDL-AMS based genetic optimisation methodology for fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) used in complex automotive systems and modelled in mixed physical domains. A case study applying this novel method to an active suspension system has been investigated to obtain a new type of fuzzy logic membership function with irregular shapes optimised for best performance. Design/methodology/approach – The geometrical shapes of the fuzzy logic membership functions are irregular and optimised using a genetic algorithm (GA). In this optimisation technique, VHDL-AMS is used not only for the modelling and simulation of the FLC and its underlying active suspension system but also for the implementation of a parallel GA directly in the system testbench. Findings – Simulation results show that the proposed FLC has superior performance in all test cases to that of existing FLCs that use regular-shape, triangular or trapezoidal membership functions. Research limitations – The test of the FLC has only been done in the simulation stage, no physical prototype has been made. Originality/value – This paper proposes a novel way of improving the FLC’s performance and a new application area for VHDL-AMS

    Fault detection, identification and accommodation techniques for unmanned airborne vehicles

    Unmanned Airborne Vehicles (UAV) are assuming prominent roles in both the commercial and military aerospace industries. The promise of reduced costs and reduced risk to human life is one of their major attractions, however these low-cost systems are yet to gain acceptance as a safe alternate to manned solutions. The absence of a thinking, observing, reacting and decision making pilot reduces the UAVs capability of managing adverse situations such as faults and failures. This paper presents a review of techniques that can be used to track the system health onboard a UAV. The review is based on a year long literature review aimed at identifying approaches suitable for combating the low reliability and high attrition rates of today’s UAV. This research primarily focuses on real-time, onboard implementations for generating accurate estimations of aircraft health for fault accommodation and mission management (change of mission objectives due to deterioration in aircraft health). The major task of such systems is the process of detection, identification and accommodation of faults and failures (FDIA). A number of approaches exist, of which model-based techniques show particular promise. Model-based approaches use analytical redundancy to generate residuals for the aircraft parameters that can be used to indicate the occurrence of a fault or failure. Actions such as switching between redundant components or modifying control laws can then be taken to accommodate the fault. The paper further describes recent work in evaluating neural-network approaches to sensor failure detection and identification (SFDI). The results of simulations with a variety of sensor failures, based on a Matlab non-linear aircraft model are presented and discussed. Suggestions for improvements are made based on the limitations of this neural network approach with the aim of including a broader range of failures, while still maintaining an accurate model in the presence of these failures
