Node Re-Usability in Structured Hypertext Systems
When the size of a graph-based hyperdocument exceeds a certain limit, the graph structure gets complicated and causes navigation and document management problems. A simple solution for this problem is the structuring ofthe hyperdocument into several smaller units. In this approach each unit contains nodes that share common properties and their link structures. Srnuller. more manageable networks (called webs) which have their own, less complex graph structures are the result. In this paper we propose a model for hypertext systems which allows hyperclocument structuring using webs. The model demonstrates node re-usability which becomes essential as it is verylikely that the smaller units created will share nodes. The implementation details of a hypertext authoring system, HypAS, based on the proposel model is also provided
Hypermedia support for argumentation-based rationale: 15 years on from gIBIS and QOC
Having developed, used and evaluated some of the early IBIS-based approaches to design rationale (DR) such as gIBIS and QOC in the late 1980s/mid-1990s, we describe the subsequent evolution of the argumentation-based paradigm through software support, and perspectives drawn from modeling and meeting facilitation. Particular attention is given to the challenge of negotiating the overheads of capturing this form of rationale. Our approach has maintained a strong emphasis on keeping the representational scheme as simple as possible to enable real time meeting mediation and capture, attending explicitly to the skills required to use the approach well, particularly for the sort of participatory, multi-stakeholder requirements analysis demanded by many design problems. However, we can then specialize the notation and the way in which the tool is used in the service of specific methodologies, supported by a customizable hypermedia environment, and interoperable with other software tools. After presenting this approach, called Compendium, we present examples to illustrate the capabilities for support security argumentation in requirements engineering, template driven modeling for document generation, and IBIS-based indexing of and navigation around video records of meetings
Proceedings of the ECSCW'95 Workshop on the Role of Version Control in CSCW Applications
The workshop entitled "The Role of Version Control in Computer Supported Cooperative Work Applications" was held on September 10, 1995 in Stockholm, Sweden in conjunction with the ECSCW'95 conference. Version control, the ability to manage relationships between successive instances of artifacts, organize those instances into meaningful structures, and support navigation and other operations on those structures, is an important problem in CSCW applications. It has long been recognized as a critical issue for inherently cooperative tasks such as software engineering, technical documentation, and authoring. The primary challenge for versioning in these areas is to support opportunistic, open-ended design processes requiring the preservation of historical perspectives in the design process, the reuse of previous designs, and the exploitation of alternative designs.
The primary goal of this workshop was to bring together a diverse group of individuals interested in examining the role of versioning in Computer Supported Cooperative Work. Participation was encouraged from members of the research community currently investigating the versioning process in CSCW as well as application designers and developers who are familiar with the real-world requirements for versioning in CSCW. Both groups were represented at the workshop resulting in an exchange of ideas and information that helped to familiarize developers with the most recent research results in the area, and to provide researchers with an updated view of the needs and challenges faced by application developers. In preparing for this workshop, the organizers were able to build upon the results of their previous one entitled "The Workshop on Versioning in Hypertext" held in conjunction with the ECHT'94 conference. The following section of this report contains a summary in which the workshop organizers report the major results of the workshop. The summary is followed by a section that contains the position papers that were accepted to the workshop. The position papers provide more detailed information describing recent research efforts of the workshop participants as well as current challenges that are being encountered in the development of CSCW applications. A list of workshop participants is provided at the end of the report.

Argumentation-based design rationale - the sharpest tools in the box
In this paper the three main argumentation-based design rationale methodologies - IBIS, QOC and DRL – will be discussed with illustrations of particular points drawn from a working example. The areas of scope, expressiveness in terms of design space and argumentation representation and the resulting usability by human and computer will be examined. Particular attention is paid to how the development of the artifact is being controlled by the evaluation of intentions and objectives that allow consistent goals throughout the design to be formulated, evaluated and modified. Furthermore, decision making within an argumentative context is highlighted
The design and evaluation of non-visual information systems for blind users
This research was motivated by the sudden increase of hypermedia information (such as
that found on CD-ROMs and on the World Wide Web), which was not initially accessible
to blind people, although offered significant advantages over traditional braille and audiotape
information. Existing non-visual information systems for blind people had very
different designs and functionality, but none of them provided what was required according
to user requirements studies: an easy-to-use non-visual interface to hypermedia material
with a range of input devices for blind students. Furthermore, there was no single suitable
design and evaluation methodology which could be used for the development of non-visual
information systems. The aims of this research were therefore: (1) to develop a generic,
iterative design and evaluation methodology consisting of a number of techniques suitable
for formative evaluation of non-visual interfaces; (2) to explore non-visual interaction
possibilities for a multimodal hypermedia browser for blind students based on user
requirements; and (3) to apply the evaluation methodology to non-visual information
systems at different stages of their development.
The methodology developed and recommended consists of a range of complementary
design and evaluation techniques, and successfully allowed the systematic development of
prototype non-visual interfaces for blind users by identifying usability problems and
developing solutions. Three prototype interfaces are described: the design and evaluation
of two versions of a hypermedia browser; and an evaluation of a digital talking book.
Recommendations made from the evaluations for an effective non-visual interface include
the provision of a consistent multimodal interface, non-speech sounds for information and
feedback, a range of simple and consistent commands for reading, navigation, orientation
and output control, and support features. This research will inform developers of similar
systems for blind users, and in addition, the methodology and design ideas are considered
sufficiently generic, but also sufficiently detailed, that the findings could be applied
successfully to the development of non-visual interfaces of any type
METHODOLOGIES FOR DESIGNING AND DEVELOPING HYPERMEDIA APPLICATIONS
Hypermedia design, as any other design activity, may be observed according to two points of view: methods which
suggest milestones to guide the designer's work and process which concerns the actual detailed behavior of the
designer at work. Cognitive studies assess that mental processes involved in any design process show widely shared
human characteristics regardless to the used design method. Thereby, they provide general keys to help designers.
Thus, a hypertext design environment should equally consider the two dimensions of a hypertext design activity, in
particular it should support the natural design process specificities, mainly the incremental and opportunist aspects.
The paper focuses on the hypertext design as a computer supported human activity. It examines what is general both
in the design methods and in the design process of hypertexts in order to determine which general features are
helpful to designers. This analysis has raised from the observation of the behavior of MacWeb users during design
tasks. It is related to sound and well known results in cognitive science. The paper also describes how the proposed

HTML Macros -- Easing the Construction and Maintenance of Web Texts
Authoring and maintaining large collections of Web texts is a cumbersome, error-prone and time-consuming business. Ongoing development of courseware for the High Performance Computing Consortium (HPCC) TLTP has only helped to emphasise these problems. Courseware requires the application of a coherent document layout (templates) for each page, and also the use of standard icons with a consistent functionality, in order to create a constant look and feel throughout the material. This provides the user with an environment where he or she can access new pages, and instantly recognise the format used, making the extraction of the information on the page much quicker, and less immediately confusing. This paper describes a system that was developed at UKC to provide a solution to the above problems via the introduction of HTML macros. These macros can be used to provide a standard document layout with a consistent look and feel, as well as tools to ease user navigation. The software is written in Perl, and achieves macro expansion and replacement using the Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and filtering the HTML source. Using macros in your HTML results in your document source code being shorter, more robust, and more powerful. Webs of documents can be built extremely fast and maintenance is made much simpler. Modelling naturalistic argumentation in research literatures: representation and interaction design issues
This paper characterises key weaknesses in the ability of current digital libraries to support scholarly inquiry, and as a way to address these, proposes computational services grounded in semiformal models of the naturalistic argumentation commonly found in research lteratures. It is argued that a design priority is to balance formal expressiveness with usability, making it critical to co-evolve the modelling scheme with appropriate user interfaces for argument construction and analysis. We specify the requirements for an argument modelling scheme for use by untrained researchers, describe the resulting ontology, contrasting it with other domain modelling and semantic web approaches, before discussing passive and intelligent user interfaces designed to support analysts in the construction, navigation and analysis of scholarly argument structures in a Web-based environment

Facilitated hypertext for collective sensemaking: 15 years on from gIBIS
Hypertext research in the mid-1980s on representing argumentation for design rationale (DR) foreshadowed what are now dominant concerns in knowledge management: representing, codifying and manipulating semiformal concepts, the use of formalisms to mediate collective sensemaking, and the construction of group memory. With the benefit of 15 years' hindsight, we can see the failure of so many DR systems to be adopted as symptomatic of the more general problem of fostering new kinds of 'literacy' in real working environments. Pursuing Engelbart's goal of "augmenting human intellect", we describe the Compendium approach to collective sensemaking, which demonstrates the impact that a facilitator can have on the learning and adoption problems that plagued earlier DR systems. We also describe how conventional documents and modelling notations can be morphed into and out of Compendium's 'native hypertext' in order to support other modes of working across diverse communities of practice
