    A blind stereoscopic image quality evaluator with segmented stacked autoencoders considering the whole visual perception route

    Most of the current blind stereoscopic image quality assessment (SIQA) algorithms cannot show reliable accuracy. One reason is that they do not have the deep architectures and the other reason is that they are designed on the relatively weak biological basis, compared with findings on human visual system (HVS). In this paper, we propose a Deep Edge and COlor Signal INtegrity Evaluator (DECOSINE) based on the whole visual perception route from eyes to the frontal lobe, and especially focus on edge and color signal processing in retinal ganglion cells (RGC) and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). Furthermore, to model the complex and deep structure of the visual cortex, Segmented Stacked Auto-encoder (S-SAE) is used, which has not utilized for SIQA before. The utilization of the S-SAE complements weakness of deep learning-based SIQA metrics that require a very long training time. Experiments are conducted on popular SIQA databases, and the superiority of DECOSINE in terms of prediction accuracy and monotonicity is proved. The experimental results show that our model about the whole visual perception route and utilization of S-SAE are effective for SIQA

    Towards Top-Down Stereoscopic Image Quality Assessment via Stereo Attention

    Stereoscopic image quality assessment (SIQA) plays a crucial role in evaluating and improving the visual experience of 3D content. Existing binocular properties and attention-based methods for SIQA have achieved promising performance. However, these bottom-up approaches are inadequate in exploiting the inherent characteristics of the human visual system (HVS). This paper presents a novel network for SIQA via stereo attention, employing a top-down perspective to guide the quality assessment process. Our proposed method realizes the guidance from high-level binocular signals down to low-level monocular signals, while the binocular and monocular information can be calibrated progressively throughout the processing pipeline. We design a generalized Stereo AttenTion (SAT) block to implement the top-down philosophy in stereo perception. This block utilizes the fusion-generated attention map as a high-level binocular modulator, influencing the representation of two low-level monocular features. Additionally, we introduce an Energy Coefficient (EC) to account for recent findings indicating that binocular responses in the primate primary visual cortex are less than the sum of monocular responses. The adaptive EC can tune the magnitude of binocular response flexibly, thus enhancing the formation of robust binocular features within our framework. To extract the most discriminative quality information from the summation and subtraction of the two branches of monocular features, we utilize a dual-pooling strategy that applies min-pooling and max-pooling operations to the respective branches. Experimental results highlight the superiority of our top-down method in simulating the property of visual perception and advancing the state-of-the-art in the SIQA field.     End-to-end deep multi-score model for No-reference stereoscopic image quality assessment

    Deep learning-based quality metrics have recently given significant improvement in Image Quality Assessment (IQA). In the field of stereoscopic vision, information is evenly distributed with slight disparity to the left and right eyes. However, due to asymmetric distortion, the objective quality ratings for the left and right images would differ, necessitating the learning of unique quality indicators for each view. Unlike existing stereoscopic IQA measures which focus mainly on estimating a global human score, we suggest incorporating left, right, and stereoscopic objective scores to extract the corresponding properties of each view, and so forth estimating stereoscopic image quality without reference. Therefore, we use a deep multi-score Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Our model has been trained to perform four tasks: First, predict the left view's quality. Second, predict the quality of the left view. Third and fourth, predict the quality of the stereo view and global quality, respectively, with the global score serving as the ultimate quality. Experiments are conducted on Waterloo IVC 3D Phase 1 and Phase 2 databases. The results obtained show the superiority of our method when comparing with those of the state-of-the-art.     Binocular Rivalry Oriented Predictive Auto-Encoding Network for Blind Stereoscopic Image Quality Measurement

    Stereoscopic image quality measurement (SIQM) has become increasingly important for guiding stereo image processing and commutation systems due to the widespread usage of 3D contents. Compared with conventional methods which are relied on hand-crafted features, deep learning oriented measurements have achieved remarkable performance in recent years. However, most existing deep SIQM evaluators are not specifically built for stereoscopic contents and consider little prior domain knowledge of the 3D human visual system (HVS) in network design. In this paper, we develop a Predictive Auto-encoDing Network (PAD-Net) for blind/No-Reference stereoscopic image quality measurement. In the first stage, inspired by the predictive coding theory that the cognition system tries to match bottom-up visual signal with top-down predictions, we adopt the encoder-decoder architecture to reconstruct the distorted inputs. Besides, motivated by the binocular rivalry phenomenon, we leverage the likelihood and prior maps generated from the predictive coding process in the Siamese framework for assisting SIQM. In the second stage, quality regression network is applied to the fusion image for acquiring the perceptual quality prediction. The performance of PAD-Net has been extensively evaluated on three benchmark databases and the superiority has been well validated on both symmetrically and asymmetrically distorted stereoscopic images under various distortion types

    No reference quality assessment of stereo video based on saliency and sparsity

    With the popularity of video technology, stereoscopic video quality assessment (SVQA) has become increasingly important. Existing SVQA methods cannot achieve good performance because the videos' information is not fully utilized. In this paper, we consider various information in the videos together, construct a simple model to combine and analyze the diverse features, which is based on saliency and sparsity. First, we utilize the 3-D saliency map of sum map, which remains the basic information of stereoscopic video, as a valid tool to evaluate the videos' quality. Second, we use the sparse representation to decompose the sum map of 3-D saliency into coefficients, then calculate the features based on sparse coefficients to obtain the effective expression of videos' message. Next, in order to reduce the relevance between the features, we put them into stacked auto-encoder, mapping vectors to higher dimensional space, and adding the sparse restraint, then input them into support vector machine subsequently, and finally, get the quality assessment scores. Within that process, we take the advantage of saliency and sparsity to extract and simplify features. Through the later experiment, we can see the proposed method is fitting well with the subjective scores

    A deep evaluator for image retargeting quality by geometrical and contextual interaction

    An image is compressed or stretched during the multidevice displaying, which will have a very big impact on perception quality. In order to solve this problem, a variety of image retargeting methods have been proposed for the retargeting process. However, how to evaluate the results of different image retargeting is a very critical issue. In various application systems, the subjective evaluation method cannot be applied on a large scale. So we put this problem in the accurate objective-quality evaluation. Currently, most of the image retargeting quality assessment algorithms use simple regression methods as the last step to obtain the evaluation result, which are not corresponding with the perception simulation in the human vision system (HVS). In this paper, a deep quality evaluator for image retargeting based on the segmented stacked AutoEnCoder (SAE) is proposed. Through the help of regularization, the designed deep learning framework can solve the overfitting problem. The main contributions in this framework are to simulate the perception of retargeted images in HVS. Especially, it trains two separated SAE models based on geometrical shape and content matching. Then, the weighting schemes can be used to combine the obtained scores from two models. Experimental results in three well-known databases show that our method can achieve better performance than traditional methods in evaluating different image retargeting results

    Providing 3D video services: the challenge from 2D to 3DTV quality of experience

    Recently, three-dimensional (3D) video has decisively burst onto the entertainment industry scene, and has arrived in households even before the standardization process has been completed. 3D television (3DTV) adoption and deployment can be seen as a major leap in television history, similar to previous transitions from black and white (B&W) to color, from analog to digital television (TV), and from standard definition to high definition. In this paper, we analyze current 3D video technology trends in order to define a taxonomy of the availability and possible introduction of 3D-based services. We also propose an audiovisual network services architecture which provides a smooth transition from two-dimensional (2D) to 3DTV in an Internet Protocol (IP)-based scenario. Based on subjective assessment tests, we also analyze those factors which will influence the quality of experience in those 3D video services, focusing on effects of both coding and transmission errors. In addition, examples of the application of the architecture and results of assessment tests are provided

    Efficient image-based rendering

    Recent advancements in real-time ray tracing and deep learning have significantly enhanced the realism of computer-generated images. However, conventional 3D computer graphics (CG) can still be time-consuming and resource-intensive, particularly when creating photo-realistic simulations of complex or animated scenes. Image-based rendering (IBR) has emerged as an alternative approach that utilizes pre-captured images from the real world to generate realistic images in real-time, eliminating the need for extensive modeling. Although IBR has its advantages, it faces challenges in providing the same level of control over scene attributes as traditional CG pipelines and accurately reproducing complex scenes and objects with different materials, such as transparent objects. This thesis endeavors to address these issues by harnessing the power of deep learning and incorporating the fundamental principles of graphics and physical-based rendering. It offers an efficient solution that enables interactive manipulation of real-world dynamic scenes captured from sparse views, lighting positions, and times, as well as a physically-based approach that facilitates accurate reproduction of the view dependency effect resulting from the interaction between transparent objects and their surrounding environment. Additionally, this thesis develops a visibility metric that can identify artifacts in the reconstructed IBR images without observing the reference image, thereby contributing to the design of an effective IBR acquisition pipeline. Lastly, a perception-driven rendering technique is developed to provide high-fidelity visual content in virtual reality displays while retaining computational efficiency.Jüngste Fortschritte im Bereich Echtzeit-Raytracing und Deep Learning haben den Realismus computergenerierter Bilder erheblich verbessert. Konventionelle 3DComputergrafik (CG) kann jedoch nach wie vor zeit- und ressourcenintensiv sein, insbesondere bei der Erstellung fotorealistischer Simulationen von komplexen oder animierten Szenen. Das bildbasierte Rendering (IBR) hat sich als alternativer Ansatz herauskristallisiert, bei dem vorab aufgenommene Bilder aus der realen Welt verwendet werden, um realistische Bilder in Echtzeit zu erzeugen, so dass keine umfangreiche Modellierung erforderlich ist. Obwohl IBR seine Vorteile hat, ist es eine Herausforderung, das gleiche Maß an Kontrolle über Szenenattribute zu bieten wie traditionelle CG-Pipelines und komplexe Szenen und Objekte mit unterschiedlichen Materialien, wie z.B. transparente Objekte, akkurat wiederzugeben. In dieser Arbeit wird versucht, diese Probleme zu lösen, indem die Möglichkeiten des Deep Learning genutzt und die grundlegenden Prinzipien der Grafik und des physikalisch basierten Renderings einbezogen werden. Sie bietet eine effiziente Lösung, die eine interaktive Manipulation von dynamischen Szenen aus der realen Welt ermöglicht, die aus spärlichen Ansichten, Beleuchtungspositionen und Zeiten erfasst wurden, sowie einen physikalisch basierten Ansatz, der eine genaue Reproduktion des Effekts der Sichtabhängigkeit ermöglicht, der sich aus der Interaktion zwischen transparenten Objekten und ihrer Umgebung ergibt. Darüber hinaus wird in dieser Arbeit eine Sichtbarkeitsmetrik entwickelt, mit der Artefakte in den rekonstruierten IBR-Bildern identifiziert werden können, ohne das Referenzbild zu betrachten, und die somit zur Entwicklung einer effektiven IBR-Erfassungspipeline beiträgt.     Augmented Reality Simulation Modules for EVD Placement Training and Planning Aids

    When a novice neurosurgeon performs a psychomotor surgical task (e.g., tool navigation into brain structures), a potential risk of damaging healthy tissues and eloquent brain structures is unavoidable. When novices make multiple hits, thus a set of undesirable trajectories is created, and resulting in the potential for surgical complications. Thus, it is important that novices not only aim for a high-level of surgical mastery but also receive deliberate training in common neurosurgical procedures and underlying tasks. Surgical simulators have emerged as an adequate candidate as effective method to teach novices in safe and free-error training environments. The design of neurosurgical simulators requires a comprehensive approach to development and. In that in mind, we demonstrate a detailed case study in which two Augmented Reality (AR) training simulation modules were designed and implemented through the adoption of Model-driven Engineering. User performance evaluation is a key aspect of the surgical simulation validity. Many AR surgical simulators become obsolete; either they are not sufficient to support enough surgical scenarios, or they were validated according to subjective assessments that did not meet every need. Accordingly, we demonstrate the feasibility of the AR simulation modules through two user studies, objectively measuring novices’ performance based on quantitative metrics. Neurosurgical simulators are prone to perceptual distance underestimation. Few investigations were conducted for improving user depth perception in head-mounted display-based AR systems with perceptual motion cues. Consequently, we report our investigation’s results about whether or not head motion and perception motion cues had an influence on users’ performance
