Contrast Enhancement of Brightness-Distorted Images by Improved Adaptive Gamma Correction
As an efficient image contrast enhancement (CE) tool, adaptive gamma
correction (AGC) was previously proposed by relating gamma parameter with
cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the pixel gray levels within an
image. ACG deals well with most dimmed images, but fails for globally bright
images and the dimmed images with local bright regions. Such two categories of
brightness-distorted images are universal in real scenarios, such as improper
exposure and white object regions. In order to attenuate such deficiencies,
here we propose an improved AGC algorithm. The novel strategy of negative
images is used to realize CE of the bright images, and the gamma correction
modulated by truncated CDF is employed to enhance the dimmed ones. As such,
local over-enhancement and structure distortion can be alleviated. Both
qualitative and quantitative experimental results show that our proposed method
yields consistently good CE results
On color image quality assessment using natural image statistics
Color distortion can introduce a significant damage in visual quality
perception, however, most of existing reduced-reference quality measures are
designed for grayscale images. In this paper, we consider a basic extension of
well-known image-statistics based quality assessment measures to color images.
In order to evaluate the impact of color information on the measures
efficiency, two color spaces are investigated: RGB and CIELAB. Results of an
extensive evaluation using TID 2013 benchmark demonstrates that significant
improvement can be achieved for a great number of distortion type when the
CIELAB color representation is used
Atmospheric Turbulence Mitigation using Complex Wavelet-based Fusion
Restoring a scene distorted by atmospheric turbulence is a challenging problem in video surveillance. The effect, caused by random, spatially varying, perturbations, makes a model-based solution difficult and in most cases, impractical. In this paper, we propose a novel method for mitigating the effects of atmospheric distortion on observed images, particularly airborne turbulence which can severely degrade a region of interest (ROI). In order to extract accurate detail about objects behind the distorting layer, a simple and efficient frame selection method is proposed to select informative ROIs only from good-quality frames. The ROIs in each frame are then registered to further reduce offsets and distortions. We solve the space-varying distortion problem using region-level fusion based on the dual tree complex wavelet transform. Finally, contrast enhancement is applied. We further propose a learning-based metric specifically for image quality assessment in the presence of atmospheric distortion. This is capable of estimating quality in both full-and no-reference scenarios. The proposed method is shown to significantly outperform existing methods, providing enhanced situational awareness in a range of surveillance scenarios. © 1992-2012 IEEE
