The conservation project and archaeological excavation of the old Parish Church at Siggiewi - an intermediate report

Until December 2007 the old parish church of Siggiewi, dating back to the late medieval period, and occupying a central location within the village core, had been in a neglected and dilapidated state for a very long time, so much so that the remaining ruins were almost totally covered with debris and thick vegetation (Plates 2; 9A; 9D; colour plate 2A; Fig. 4 and colour plate 3). While passing by the walled up and highly degraded site, the inhabitants of Siggiewi barely knew that beneath the soil and vegetation were the remains of their first parish church and the cemetery where most of their ancestors had been buried.peer-reviewe

Abstract : The present dissertation consists of an investigation of the construction of the Gothic theme of decadence in Bram Stoker's Dracula and two film adaptations of the novel - Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Nosferatu and Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula - having as the centre of analysis how three characters - Dracula, Jonathan Harker and Mina Harker - relate to that theme. The Gothic decadence is a literary motif from the fin-de-siècle context of the Victorian Era inspired by the social crisis that took place in England in the late nineteenth century (Punter and Byron 39-40). Authors like Bram Stoker wrote stories that reflected moral and social fears of the Victorian society, depicting images of monsters that represented the crossing of moral and sexual boundaries established by the Victorian traditions (Botting 88). Bearing that discussion in mind, this study aims at connecting the portrayal of such a theme from novel to the two adaptations, also making use of a filmic analysis to identify techniques that highlight the depiction of the theme related to the three characters, ultimately linking such a thematic depiction to crises and social commotions that were taking place in both films' social contexts

Waterpower: A Geophysical and Archaeological Investigation of the Waterpower System at the West Point Foundry, Cold Spring, New York, describes the results of ground penetrating radar surveys and archaeological excavation undertaken by Michigan Technological University (MTU) archaeologists during the summer of 2003 at the West Point Foundry, Cold Spring, New York. 2003 constituted MTU\u27s second field season at the foundry. Fieldwork concentrated on the foundry\u27s waterpower system, an intricate network of surface and subsurface drains, races, flumes, waterwheels, turbines, dams, and ponds that powered operations and regulated water flow throughout the site. Archaeologists utilized non-destructive geophysical technology, which expedited survey, facilitated placement of excavation units, and provided a model for future archaeogeophysical research at industrial sites. Features discovered during excavation provided valuable information pertaining to the waterpower system\u27s construction and its functions. Data from ground penetrating radar surveys, archaeological excavation, historical photographs, documents, and maps permitted the development of a provisional chronology of the development of various components of the West Point Foundry\u27s waterpower system. Information gathered during this project serves as an aid in sit interpretation and rehabilitation

Liquid-solid interaction at nanoscale and its application in vegetal biology

The water ascent in tall trees is subject to controversy: the vegetal biologists debate on the validity of the cohesion-tension theory which considers strong negative pressures in microtubes of xylem carrying the crude sap. This article aims to point out that liquids are submitted at the walls to intermolecular forces inferring density gradients making heterogeneous liquid layers and therefore disqualifying the Navier-Stokes equations for nanofilms. The crude sap motion takes the disjoining pressure gradient into account and the sap flow dramatically increases such that the watering of nanolayers may be analogous to a microscopic flow. Application to microtubes of xylem avoids the problem of cavitation and enables us to understand why the ascent of sap is possible for very high trees.Comment: 16 pages 1 figure New modern concept of the sap ascent in high trees taking into account the disjoining pressure in nanofilms of liquids. The motion of the sap is related to thin films slippering on the xylem wall
