    A systematic review of gerontechnologies to support aging in place among community-dwelling older adults and their family caregivers

    ObjectivePaucity of information concerning the efficacy of gerontechnologies to support aging in place among community-dwelling older adults prevents potential users, healthcare professionals, and policymakers from making informed decisions on their use. The goal of this study was to identify gerontechnologies tested for home support in dyads of community-dwelling older adults with unimpaired cognition and their family caregivers, including their benefits and challenges. We also provide the level of evidence of the studies and recommendations to address the specific challenges preventing their use, dissemination, and implementation.MethodsWe conducted a systematic review of the literature published between 2016 and 2021 on gerontechnologies tested for home support in dyads. Two independent reviewers screened the abstracts according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria. A third reviewer resolved eligibility discrepancies. Data extraction was conducted by two independent reviewers.ResultsOf 1,441 articles screened, only 13 studies met the inclusion criteria with studies of moderate quality. Mostly, these gerontechnologies were used to monitor the older adult or the environment, to increase communication with family caregivers, to assist in daily living activities, and to provide health information. Benefits included facilitating communication, increasing safety, and reducing stress. Common challenges included difficulties using the technologies, technical problems, privacy issues, increased stress and dissatisfaction, and a mismatch between values and needs.ConclusionOnly a few gerontechnologies have proven efficacy in supporting community-dwelling older adults and their family caregivers. The inclusion of values and preferences, co-creation with end users, designing easy-to-use technologies, and assuring training are strongly recommended to increase acceptability and dissemination.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=310803, identifier CRD42022310803

    A review of abnormal behavior detection in activities of daily living

    Abnormal behavior detection (ABD) systems are built to automatically identify and recognize abnormal behavior from various input data types, such as sensor-based and vision-based input. As much as the attention received for ABD systems, the number of studies on ABD in activities of daily living (ADL) is limited. Owing to the increasing rate of elderly accidents in the home compound, ABD in ADL research should be given as much attention to preventing accidents by sending out signals when abnormal behavior such as falling is detected. In this study, we compare and contrast the formation of the ABD system in ADL from input data types (sensor-based input and vision-based input) to modeling techniques (conventional and deep learning approaches). We scrutinize the public datasets available and provide solutions for one of the significant issues: the lack of datasets in ABD in ADL. This work aims to guide new research to understand the field of ABD in ADL better and serve as a reference for future study of better Ambient Assisted Living with the growing smart home trend

    In this dissertation, I investigate the concerns, issues and opportunities for platform labor reform with a focus on the ride-hailing sector using Bardzell (2010)’s feminist lens. The feminist viewpoint keeps the marginal user at the center committing to equity, diversity, identity, empowerment, and social justice to improve the work conditions of gig workers in the Global South. By conducting in-depth qualitative interviews with the different stakeholders of the ride-hailing sector, and analysing case studies, media coverage, policy papers, and research reports, I suggest guidelines for redesigning the digital labor platforms

    Towards a Sustainable Life: Smart and Green Design in Buildings and Community

    This Special Issue includes contributions about occupants’ sustainable living in buildings and communities, highlighting issues surrounding the sustainable development of our environments and lives by emphasizing smart and green design perspectives. This Special Issue specifically focuses on research and case studies that develop promising methods for the sustainable development of our environment and identify factors critical to the application of a sustainable paradigm for quality of life from a user-oriented perspective. After a rigorous review of the submissions by experts, fourteen articles concerning sustainable living and development are published in this Special Issue, written by authors sharing their expertise and approaches to the concept and application of sustainability in their fields. The fourteen contributions to this special issue can be categorized into four groups, depending on the issues that they address. All the proposed methods, models, and applications in these studies contribute to the current understanding of the adoption of the sustainability paradigm and are likely to inspire further research addressing the challenges of constructing sustainable buildings and communities resulting in a sustainable life for all of society

    Supporting working carers of people living with dementia: The potential of technologies for combining work and care

    Background: Carers of a person with dementia are faced with unique challenges when combining paid work and unpaid care. Technology can address some of these challenges. This PhD project aims to explore and identify technologies which have the potential to support working dementia carers and to map these technologies onto the work-care reconciliation challenges they express. Methods: Scoping reviews and a participatory design approach were used to explore A) the problem, and B) the solution. Semi-structured interviews with 16 working dementia carers helped to identify what work-care-reconciliation challenges carers wanted solutions for. A comprehensive review of the technology landscape then identified technologies – currently available and emerging – which could address these work-care reconciliation challenges. Technology experts from academia, industry, and social care commission validated the findings. Finally, a custom-built website was used to get feedback from those intended to use these technologies. Findings: Work-care reconciliation challenges carers wanted solutions for included i) care management, ii) attending appointments, iii) entertainment and companionship, iv) psychological and psychosocial stress, v) safety concerns, vi) accessing information, and vii) personal care. A total of 83 technologies, deemed to address the work-care reconciliation challenges carers had identified, emerged from the technology landscape review. These were mapped onto carers' work-care reconciliation challenges (technology map). Most of these technologies were thought to be useful by participants of the online technology evaluation. However, technologies’ effects on other stakeholders, especially people with dementia, were important considerations. Conclusion/implications for practice: The technology map can be used as a reference by working dementia carers and those aiming to support them (i.e., their employers, carer or dementia support organisations, and local authority adult social care departments) to identify technological solutions to their challenges. Furthermore, it could be used by technology providers as a guide for further research and development

    Occupational Health and Safety in the Healthcare Sector

    Healthcare workers are exposed to several different occupational risk factors, and they pay an important tribute in terms of occupational diseases and work-related injuries. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic has focused the attention on the problem of the infectious risk, which is certainly among the risks typically expected and specifically recognized for the health personnel, but also other occupational risks should not be overlooked, such as, e.g., the risks associated with work-organization factors and with the exposure to chemical and physical agents. The health consequences associated with the exposure to all these factors have relevant impacts in terms of induced diseases, DALYs, sickness absence from work and costs for the health systems. According to these premises, this reprint has collected manuscripts addressing topics related to the prevention of the occupational risks in the healthcare sector, including original articles and reviews on the prevention of work-related illnesses and injuries of the health personnel, as well as on the evaluation of the risks in the healthcare workplaces, and on the topics of risk perception and of the knowledge and attitudes of the workers towards the preventive procedures and the use of protections. The themes of the prevention of occupational infectious risk, biomechanical overload of the musculoskeletal system and work-related psychosocial factors are specifically discussed in the papers collected
