Nifty with data: can a business intelligence analysis sourced from open data form a nifty assignment?

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a *nifty assignment* in data mining and discusses how quality in database assignments differs from other domains in computer science, particularly programming. It then considers the sources of data used, to study whether Open Data can form the basis of more such assignments, and if so how. In the next sections, we describe the nifty assessment criteria and explain why use them as a standard for quality of assessment. We then propose an assignment which outlines a number of topics related to finding and accessing Open Data, merging sources, and analysing the data using self-service and data mining tools. Once the assignment is clear, we will reconsider it against the nifty criteria, but also consider how the criteria themselves apply to the area of data mining which has few assignments proposed. Finally, we will consider whether the basis of this assignment, the use of Open Data as a source of data to analyse, can be extended to different cases and examples, and if so how. AI Education: Open-Access Educational Resources on AI

Open-access AI educational resources are vital to the quality of the AI education we offer. Avoiding the reinvention of wheels is especially important to us because of the special challenges of AI Education. AI could be said to be ā€œthe really interesting miscellaneous pile of Computer Scienceā€. While ā€œartificialā€ is well-understood to encompass engineered artifacts, ā€œintelligenceā€ could be said to encompass any sufficiently difficult problem as would require an intelligent approach and yet does not fall neatly into established Computer Science subdisciplines. Thus AI consists of so many diverse topics that we would be hard-pressed to individually create quality learning experiences for each topic from scratch. In this column, we focus on a few online resources that we would recommend to AI Educators looking to find good starting points for course development. [excerpt

Commodity investments: opportunities for Indian institutional investors

An attempt has been made to establish the fact that by investing in commodities or it alternative channels, institutional investors like banks can not only compensate for the lower risk-free returns in their major chunk of investments in Government securities, but also will be able to diversify some amount of their portfolio risk which is expected to rise by taking exposure in commodity market. The results exhibited in all the tables and figures clearly depict that investment in alternative channels like commodity indices or commodity futures contracts in India will not only allow the institutional investors to leverage their portfolio return, but also will ensure that diversification benefits is achieved. Therefore, even if investment in direct commodities are restricted for Indian banks, but still there is a significant opportunity for them to invest in the available alternative channels like commodity indices or commodity futures contracts.Investment Portfolio, Commodity, Commodity Futures, Institutional Investors

The New CGEMS - Preparing the Computer Graphics Educational Materials Source to Meet the Needs of Educators

    Get PDF
ACM SIGGRAPH and Eurographics are restarting CGEMS, the Computer Graphics Educational Materials Source, an on-line repository of curricular material for computer graphics education. In this context, the question that we ask ourselves is: ''How can CGEMS best meet the needs of educators''? The aim of this forum is to provide the audience with an idea of the purpose of CGEMS - a source of educational materials for educators by educators - and to give them an opportunity to contribute their views and ideas towards shaping the new CGEMS. Towards this purpose, we have identified a number of issues to resolve, which the panel will put forward to the participants of the forum for discussion

Systems Analysis and Design Application: Future Vehicle Prototyping

    Get PDF
This nifty assignment research is presented in an undergraduate level course on Systems Analysis and Design to provide additional student engagement in the context of an applied team problem solving exercise to prototype a future vehicle. Systems Analysis and Design (SAND) is the process of identifying business opportunities or problems, analyzing the business opportunity, developing solutions to address the opportunity, and finally implementing the solution. This project provides the following contributions: 1.) An experiential learning activity provides students the opportunity to apply the learning classroom content to a real-world scenario, and 2.) The experiential learning method engages students to apply their current knowledge and reflect on the scenario to build upon their knowledge. The Learning Objectives include: 1.) Practice and perform prototyping, 2.) Apply the agile approach, and 3.) Utilize underlying analyst competencies
