Single-machine scheduling with stepwise tardiness costs and release times
We study a scheduling problem that belongs to the yard operations component of the railroad planning problems, namely the hump sequencing problem. The scheduling problem is characterized as a single-machine problem with stepwise tardiness cost objectives. This is a new scheduling criterion which is also relevant in the context of traditional machine scheduling problems. We produce complexity results that characterize some cases of the problem as pseudo-polynomially solvable. For the difficult-to-solve cases of the problem, we develop mathematical programming formulations, and propose heuristic algorithms. We test the formulations and heuristic algorithms on randomly generated single-machine scheduling problems and real-life datasets for the hump sequencing problem. Our experiments show promising results for both sets of problems
Order acceptance and scheduling in a single-machine environment: exact and heuristic algorithms.
In this paper, we develop exact and heuristic algorithms for the order acceptance and scheduling problem in a single-machine environment. We consider the case where a pool consisting of firm planned orders as well as potential orders is available from which an over-demanded company can select. The capacity available for processing the accepted orders is limited and orders are characterized by known processing times, delivery dates, revenues and the weight representing a penalty per unit-time delay beyond the delivery date promised to the customer. We prove the non-approximability of the problem and give two linear formulations that we solve with CPLEX. We devise two exact branch-and-bound procedures able to solve problem instances of practical dimensions. For the solution of large instances, we propose six heuristics. We provide a comparison and comments on the efficiency and quality of the results obtained using both the exact and heuristic algorithms, including the solution of the linear formulations using CPLEX.Order acceptance; Scheduling; Single machine; Branch-and-bound; Heuristics; Firm planned orders;
Parallel-Machine Scheduling Problems with Past-Sequence-Dependent Delivery Times and Aging Maintenance
We consider parallel-machine scheduling problems with past-sequence-dependent (psd) delivery times and aging maintenance. The delivery time is proportional to the waiting time in the system. Each machine has an aging maintenance activity. We develop polynomial algorithms to three versions of the problem to minimize the total absolute deviation of job completion times, the total load, and the total completion time
Project scheduling under undertainty – survey and research potentials.
The vast majority of the research efforts in project scheduling assume complete information about the scheduling problem to be solved and a static deterministic environment within which the pre-computed baseline schedule will be executed. However, in the real world, project activities are subject to considerable uncertainty, that is gradually resolved during project execution. In this survey we review the fundamental approaches for scheduling under uncertainty: reactive scheduling, stochastic project scheduling, stochastic GERT network scheduling, fuzzy project scheduling, robust (proactive) scheduling and sensitivity analysis. We discuss the potentials of these approaches for scheduling projects under uncertainty.Management; Project management; Robustness; Scheduling; Stability;

Solution and quality robust project scheduling: a methodological framework.
The vast majority of the research efforts in project scheduling over the past several years has concentrated on the development of exact and suboptimal procedures for the generation of a baseline schedule assuming complete information and a deterministic environment. During execution, however, projects may be the subject of considerable uncertainty, which may lead to numerous schedule disruptions. Predictive-reactive scheduling refers to the process where a baseline schedule is developed prior to the start of the project and updated if necessary during project execution. It is the objective of this paper to review possible procedures for the generation of proactive (robust) schedules, which are as well as possible protected against schedule disruptions, and for the deployment of reactive scheduling procedures that may be used to revise or re-optimize the baseline schedule when unexpected events occur. We also offer a methodological framework that should allow project management to identify the proper scheduling methodology for different project scheduling environments. Finally, we survey the basics of Critical Chain scheduling and indicate in which environments it is useful.Framework; Information; Management; Processes; Project management; Project scheduling; Project scheduling under uncertainty; Stability; Robust scheduling; Quality; Scheduling; Stability; Uncertainty;
Branch and Bound Method to Solve Multi Objectives Function
This paper presents a branch and bound algorithm for sequencing a set of n independent jobs on a single machine to minimize sum of the discounted total weighted completion time and maximum lateness, this problems is NP-hard. Two lower bounds were proposed and heuristic method to get an upper bound. Some special cases were proved and some dominance rules were suggested and proved, the problem solved with up to 50 jobs
