    A review on analysis and synthesis of nonlinear stochastic systems with randomly occurring incomplete information

The well-known types of incomplete information include parameter uncertainties and norm-bounded nonlinearities. Recently, in response to the development of network technologies, the phenomenon of randomly occurring incomplete information has become more and more prevalent. Such a phenomenon typically appears in a networked environment. Examples include, but are not limited to, randomly occurring uncertainties, randomly occurring nonlinearities, randomly occurring saturation, randomly missing measurements and randomly occurring quantization. Randomly occurring incomplete information, if not properly handled, would seriously deteriorate the performance of a control system. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the analysis and synthesis problems for nonlinear stochastic systems with randomly occurring incomplete information. The developments of the filtering, control and fault detection problems are systematically reviewed. Latest results on analysis and synthesis of nonlinear stochastic systems are discussed in great detail. In addition, various distributed filtering technologies over sensor networks are highlighted. Standard conic sector bounded nonlinearity stability theory provides methods for analyzing the stability and performance of systems under constraints, but it is well-known that these conditions can be very conservative.     Phase limitations of Zames-Falb multipliers

    Phase limitations of both continuous-time and discrete-time Zames-Falb multipliers and their relation with the Kalman conjecture are analysed. A phase limitation for continuous-time multipliers given by Megretski is generalised and its applicability is clarified; its relation to the Kalman conjecture is illustrated with a classical example from the literature. It is demonstrated that there exist fourth-order plants where the existence of a suitable Zames-Falb multiplier can be discarded and for which simulations show unstable behavior. A novel phase-limitation for discrete-time Zames-Falb multipliers is developed. Its application is demonstrated with a second-order counterexample to the Kalman conjecture. Finally, the discrete-time limitation is used to show that there can be no direct counterpart of the off-axis circle criterion in the discrete-time domain

    Surrogate-assisted network analysis of nonlinear time series

    The performance of recurrence networks and symbolic networks to detect weak nonlinearities in time series is compared to the nonlinear prediction error. For the synthetic data of the Lorenz system, the network measures show a comparable performance. In the case of relatively short and noisy real-world data from active galactic nuclei, the nonlinear prediction error yields more robust results than the network measures. The tests are based on surrogate data sets. The correlations in the Fourier phases of data sets from some surrogate generating algorithms are also examined.
