    New directional bat algorithm for continuous optimization problems

    Bat algorithm (BA) is a recent optimization algorithm based on swarm intelligence and inspiration from the echolocation behavior of bats. One of the issues in the standard bat algorithm is the premature convergence that can occur due to the low exploration ability of the algorithm under some conditions. To overcome this deficiency, directional echolocation is introduced to the standard bat algorithm to enhance its exploration and exploitation capabilities. In addition to such directional echolocation, three other improvements have been embedded into the standard bat algorithm to enhance its performance. The new proposed approach, namely the directional Bat Algorithm (dBA), has been then tested using several standard and non-standard benchmarks from the CEC’2005 benchmark suite. The performance of dBA has been compared with ten other algorithms and BA variants using non-parametric statistical tests. The statistical test results show the superiority of the directional bat algorithm

    A New Metaheuristic Bat-Inspired Algorithm

    Metaheuristic algorithms such as particle swarm optimization, firefly algorithm and harmony search are now becoming powerful methods for solving many tough optimization problems. In this paper, we propose a new metaheuristic method, the Bat Algorithm, based on the echolocation behaviour of bats. We also intend to combine the advantages of existing algorithms into the new bat algorithm. After a detailed formulation and explanation of its implementation, we will then compare the proposed algorithm with other existing algorithms, including genetic algorithms and particle swarm optimization. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm seems much superior to other algorithms, and further studies are also discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    Firefly Algorithm: Recent Advances and Applications

    Nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms, especially those based on swarm intelligence, have attracted much attention in the last ten years. Firefly algorithm appeared in about five years ago, its literature has expanded dramatically with diverse applications. In this paper, we will briefly review the fundamentals of firefly algorithm together with a selection of recent publications. Then, we discuss the optimality associated with balancing exploration and exploitation, which is essential for all metaheuristic algorithms. By comparing with intermittent search strategy, we conclude that metaheuristics such as firefly algorithm are better than the optimal intermittent search strategy. We also analyse algorithms and their implications for higher-dimensional optimization problems.Comment: 15 page

    Comparison of a bat and genetic algorithm generated sequence against lead through programming when assembling a PCB using a 6 axis robot with multiple motions and speeds

    An optimal component feeder arrangement and robotic placement sequence are both important for improving assembly efficiency. Both problems are combinatorial in nature and known to be NP-hard. This paper presents a novel discrete hybrid bat-inspired algorithm for solving the feeder slot assignment and placement sequence problem encountered when planning robotic assembly of electronic components. In our method, we use the concepts of swap operators and swap sequence to redefine position, and velocity operators from the basic bat algorithm. Furthermore, we propose an improved local search method based on genetic operators of crossover and mutation enhanced by the 2-opt search procedure. The algorithm is formulated with the objective of minimizing the total traveling distance of the pick and place device. Through numerical experiments, using a real PCB assembly scenario, we demonstrate the considerable effectiveness of the proposed discrete Bat Algorithm (BA) to improve selection of feeder arrangement and placement sequence in PCB assembly operations and achieve high throughput production. The results also highlighted that the even though the algorithms out performed traditional lead through programming techniques, the programmer must consider the influence of different robot motions

    Joint Transmission and Energy Transfer Policies for Energy Harvesting Devices with Finite Batteries

    One of the main concerns in traditional Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is energy efficiency. In this work, we analyze two techniques that can extend network lifetime. The first is Ambient \emph{Energy Harvesting} (EH), i.e., the capability of the devices to gather energy from the environment, whereas the second is Wireless \emph{Energy Transfer} (ET), that can be used to exchange energy among devices. We study the combination of these techniques, showing that they can be used jointly to improve the system performance. We consider a transmitter-receiver pair, showing how the ET improvement depends upon the statistics of the energy arrivals and the energy consumption of the devices. With the aim of maximizing a reward function, e.g., the average transmission rate, we find performance upper bounds with and without ET, define both online and offline optimization problems, and present results based on realistic energy arrivals in indoor and outdoor environments. We show that ET can significantly improve the system performance even when a sizable fraction of the transmitted energy is wasted and that, in some scenarios, the online approach can obtain close to optimal performance.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figure
