Objective This study was conducted to assess effects of heat stress on growth performance, physiological parameters, and blood profiles of Hanwoo steers during early-fattening period in climate chambers. Methods Four Hanwoo steers (body weight, 454.3±10.9 kg; age, 14±0.1 month) were allocated into four levels of temperature-humidity index (THI) in a 4×4 Latin square design for 21 days (pre-adaptation, 7 d; heat stress, 7 d; post-adaptation, 7 d) per period. Experimental treatments were assigned according to THI chart based on National Institute Animal Science (NIAS, 2022): Comfort (25.5°C to 26.5°C, 60%; THI 73 to 75), Mild (28°C to 29°C, 60%; THI 77 to 79), Moderate (29.5°C to 30.5°C, 80%; THI 82 to 84), and Severe (31°C to 32°C, 80%; THI 85 to 86) in separate climatic controlled chambers. Results The dry matter intake (DMI) of the formula feed was lower in Severe compared to Mild and Comfort (p<0.05). The DMI of rice straw was the lowest in Severe and lower in Moderate than Comfort and Mild (p<0.05). Both average daily gain and feed conversion ratio of Severe and Moderate were lower than those of Mild and Comfort (p<0.05). Water intake was the highest in Severe and lower in Moderate compared with Comfort and Mild (p<0.05). Heart rate and rectal temperature increased as THI level increased (p<0.05). Glucose was the lowest in Severe and lower in Moderate compared to Comfort (p<0.05). On the contrary, non-esterified fatty acid was the highest in Severe and lower in Moderate compared with Comfort (p<0.05). Blood urea nitrogen of Moderate and Severe were higher than those of Comfort and Mild (p<0.05). Cortisol increased as THI increased (p<0.05). Conclusion This study demonstrated the negative effects of heat stress on the performance and physiological responses of Hanwoo steers during the early-fattening period. In addition, it is judged that the THI chart for Hanwoo steers of National Institute of Animal Science (2022) was properly calculated

One of the most significant effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic on adolescents is the learning system at schools or universities that switches online and the social environment limitation. The incapacity of adolescents to adapt during a pandemic can cause stress, which affects adolescents’ poor mental health. Therefore, efforts must be made to maintain adolescents’ mental health, including the provision of Spiritual Motivation Training and Emotion Regulation Workshops. The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of Spiritual Motivation Training and Emotion Regulation Workshop in reducing stress levels, enhancing emotional regulation skills, and improving adolescents’ mental health. This study employs action research methods. Observation, interviews, the Stress Inventory Scale, the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire, and the Mental Health Inventory were used to collect data. This study used a mixed-methods design. The Wilcoxon Test and the theories of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana were utilized to examine the data. 11 participants in this study filled out measurement instruments before and after receiving treatment. Spiritual Motivation Training and Emotion Regulation Workshop were found to be successful in reducing respondent stress and enhancing subject understanding of the steps involved in implementing emotion regulation, but less effective in improving respondent mental health

At some point in our lives each of us must decide upon a career or profession and the path necessary to achieve that goal. Some make that decision at an early age; others make it much later in life and are often influenced by outside forces, experiences, opportunities, and obligations. Choosing which path to take is not easy, and in this regard, Professor Constantine Katsoris would like to share the crossroads he encountered throughout his six decades of teaching at Fordham Law School—a school he has come to describe as the school of opportunity. This Essay outlines his career in law

    Get PDF
Apesar das boas práticas já existentes nas cooperativas gaúchas do ramo agropecuário, constatou-se ainda que existe necessidade de implementar mais práticas de sustentabilidade ESG.Cooperativism is a model that provides cooperative members and the community with the opportunity to improve living conditions, based on environmental, social and governance pillars with a focus on cooperative principles, taking into account economic performance, contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and building a better present and future for future generations. This is an exploratory study carried out with the universe of cooperatives that make up the Ocergs/Sescoop, Fecovinho, Fecolã, Unicafes, Fecoagro, Fearrroz Systems, totaling 96 agricultural cooperatives in Rio Grande do Sul. Of these, 89 cooperatives responded to the questionnaire from Oct/2022 to Jan/2023, representing 92,71% of the total. The general objective of the research was to analyze ESG sustainability practices and their relationships with the different performance measures of agricultural cooperatives in RS. The first specific objective provided identifying and characterizing which ESG practices had a higher arithmetic mean, along with the SDGs in comparison to the principles and economic performance. The main practices of the ESG dimensions are: maintaining a good relationship with government bodies (0,96) (governance); respect the minimum working age (0,94) (social); comply with environmental legislation (0,88) (environmental). The second specific objective made it possible to verify and measure how the practices of the ESG dimensions relate to economic performance, cooperative principles and the SDGs. Thus, the highest correlations in the research occurred between the ESG variables, as well as between the environmental x SDG dimension. It is important to emphasize that all correlations are positive between all dimensions, a very relevant result. The third specific objective made it possible to analyze and assess how practices between the dimensions of economic performance, cooperative principles and SDGs are related. Correlations were low, although positive, in the following descending order: cooperative principles x SDGs; cooperative x economic principles; and economic x SDGs. Therefore, all objectives were achieved satisfactorily. In summary, the results of the research allow us to state that agricultural cooperatives in Rio Grande do Sul adopt governance (0,60), social (0,59) and environmental (0,51) practices, with emphasis on actions aimed at governance and the social that presented the highest arithmetic mean, which shows that there is still room for more practices. It is concluded that cooperatives have practices in all dimensions. There was a good adhesion of the cooperatives to the study and the pleasant surprise of identifying that one of the cooperatives in only one dimension (ODS) does not have any practice. The rest of the agricultural cooperatives in Rio Grande do Sul that responded to the dimension all adopt one or more practices. This thesis leaves behind the valuable contribution of having almost all agricultural cooperatives in RS, a branch that has many restrictions on research within the cooperative; in addition, it had a broad questionnaire, covering many questions (143); and innovated in the methodology used, through a nominal questionnaire transformed into a numerical scale. Despite the good practices that already exist in the agricultural cooperatives in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, it was found that there is still a need to implement more ESG sustainability practices

Traditionally, Power Systems capacity has been determined by angular stability or thermal capacity of their elements. But factors like intense load growth, system expansion, and systems interconnections, through long transmission lines, have caused problems related to voltage instability and many voltage collapse events have been verified all over the world. As the majority of voltage collapse events are related to equipments that have a slow dynamic behavior, studies of long term voltage control are significantly affected due to the difficulty of representing these equipments in the process of load and generation variation in the system. The automatic and discrete switching of these equipments generate significant impacts on system voltage control and need to be represented accurately to perform more precise, and less conservative, load margin calculus than the ones that are traditionally performed with the majority of static analysis tools available. The present study used a simulation tool capable of implementing a control logic of these slow dynamic behavior equipments based on the bus to be controlled and on suitable voltage control ranges that were established from the experience of operating the studied system, trying to identify, through comparative studies, the impacts of these equipments on voltage security analysis. The studies were made under a wide range of generation dispatches that were applied in some specific areas of the system. It was verified that representing these slow dynamic behavior equipments using voltage control range brought significant benefits on load margins of the analyzed system.
