    Smart grids for rural conditions and e-mobility - Applying power routers, batteries and virtual power plants

    Significant reductions of greenhouse gas emission by use of renewable energy sources belong to the common targets of the European Union. Smart grids address intelligent use and integration of conventional and renewable generation in combination with controllable loads and storages. Two special aspects have also to be considered for smart grids in future: rural conditions and electric vehicles. Both, the increasing share of renewable energy sources and a rising demand for charging power by electrical vehicles lead to new challenges of network stability (congestion, voltage deviation), especially in rural distribution grids. This paper describes two lighthouse projects in Europe (“Well2Wheel” and “Smart Rural Grid”) dealing with these topics. The link between these projects is the implementation of the same virtual power plant technology and the approach of cellular grid cells. Starting with an approach for the average energy balance in 15 minutes intervals in several grid cells in the first project, the second project even allows the islanded operation of such cells as a microgrid. The integration of renewable energy sources into distribution grids primary takes place in rural areas. The lighthouse project “Smart Rural Grid”, which is founded by the European Union, demonstrates possibilities to use the existing distribution system operator infrastructure more effectively by applying an optimised and scheduled operation of the assets and using intelligent distribution power routers, called IDPR. IDPR are active power electronic devices operating at low voltage in distribution grids aiming to reduce losses due to unbalanced loads and enabling active voltage and reactive power control. This allows a higher penetration of renewable energy sources in existing grids without investing in new lines and transformers. Integrated in a virtual power plant and combined with batteries, the IDPR also allows a temporary islanded mode of grid cells. Both projects show the potential of avoiding or postponing investments in new primary infrastructure like cables, transformers and lines by using a forward-looking operation which controls generators, loads and batteries (mobile and stationary) by using new grid assets like power routers. While primary driven by physical restrictions as voltage-band violations and energy balance, these cells also define and allow local smart markets. In consequence the distribution system operators could avoid direct control access by giving an incentive to the asset owners by local price signals according to the grid situation and forecasted congestions.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Measurement-Based Monitoring and Control in Power Systems with High Renewable Penetrations

    Power systems are experiencing rapid changes in their generation mixes because of the increasing integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and the retirement of traditional generations. This opens opportunities for a cleaner energy outlook but also poses challenges to the safe operation of the power networks. Enhanced monitoring and control based on the increasingly available measurements are essential in assisting stable operation and effective planning for these evolving systems. First, awareness of the evolving dynamic characteristics is quintessential for secure operation and corrective planning. A quantified monitoring study that keeps track of the inertial response and primary frequency response is conducted on the Eastern Interconnection (EI) for the past decade with field data. Whereas the inertia declined by at least 10%, the primary frequency response experienced an unexpected increase. The findings unveiled in the trending analysis also led to an improved event MW size estimation method, as well as discussions about regional dynamics. Experiencing a faster and deeper renewable integration, the Continental Europe Synchronous Area (CESA) system has been threatened by more frequent occurrences of inter-area oscillations during light-load high-renewable periods. A measurement-based oscillation damping control scheme is proposed for CESA with reduced reliance on system models. The design, implementation, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing of the controller are discussed in detail. Despite the challenges, the increasing presence of IBRs also brings opportunities for fast and efficient controls. Together with synchronized measurement, IBRs have the potential to flexibly complement traditional frequency and voltage control schemes for improved frequency and voltage recovery. The design, implementation, and HIL testing of the measurement-based frequency and voltage control for the New York State Grid are presented. In addition to the transmission level development, IBRs deployed in distribution networks can also be valuable assets in emergency islanding situations if controlled properly. A power management module is proposed to take advantage of measurements and automatically control the electric boundaries of islanded microgrids for maximized power utilization and improved frequency regulation. The module is designed to be adaptive to arbitrary non-meshed topologies with multiple source locations for increased flexibility, expedited deployment, and reduced cost

    New topology of a hybrid, three-phase, four-wire shunt active power filter

    With a view to reducing harmonic content in electrical power systems, and, consequently, improving power quality level, filters and other harmonic compensation devices are widely used. In the category of filters, they can be distinguished into two classes that are related to the operating mode, active or passive, both widely known and applied in electrical power grids and in the most diverse industry sectors. In this sense, taking into account the use of compensating devices in four-wire electrical systems feeding single-phase, non-linear loads, this paper presents a new hybrid arrangement of harmonic compensation that incorporates both active and passive filtering, which performs all functions concerning the harmonic compensation of a four-leg shunt active power filter. In this hybrid arrangement, the harmonic filtering of positive and negative sequence components is performed by a three-leg shunt active power filter, while the filtering of zero-sequence harmonics is attributed to the electromagnetic zero-sequence suppressor. The results, which confirm the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid arrangement, are proven through simulations and experimental tests in different operating scenarios, revealing a substantial improvement in the system’s power factor, as well as a reduction in harmonic distortions.This research was funded by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia grant number UIDB/00319/2020

    Mitigating unbalance using distributed network reconfiguration techniques in distributed power generation grids with services for electric vehicles: A review

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd With rapid movement to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gases, there is an increasing trend to use more electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy sources (RES). With more EVs integration into electricity grid, this raises many challenges for the distribution service operators (DSOs) to integrate such RES-based, distributed generation (DG) and EV-like distributed loads into distribution grids. Effective management of distribution network imbalance is one of the challenges. The distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) techniques are promising to address the issue of imbalance along with other techniques such as the optimal distributed generation placement and allocation (OPDGA) method. This paper presents a systematic and thorough review of DNR techniques for mitigating unbalance of distribution networks, based on papers published in peer-reviewed journals in the last three decades. It puts more focus on how the DNR techniques have been used to manage network imbalance due to distributed loads and DG units. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to review the research works in the field using DNR techniques to mitigate unbalanced distribution networks. Therefore, this paper will serve as a prime source of the guidance for mitigating network imbalance using the DNR techniques to the new researchers in this field
