    Toward a North American Standard for Mobile Data Services

    The rapid introduction of digital mobile communications systems is an important part of the emerging digital communications scene. These developments pose both a potential problem and a challenge. On one hand, these separate market driven developments can result in an uncontrolled mixture of analog and digital links which inhibit data modem services across the mobile/Public Switched network (PSTN). On the other hand, the near coincidence of schedules for development of some of these systems, i.e., Digital Cellular, Mobile Satellite, Land Mobile Radio, and ISDN, provides an opportunity to address interoperability problems by defining interfaces, control, and service standards that are compatible among these new services. In this paper we address the problem of providing data services interoperation between mobile terminals and data devices on the PSTN. The expected data services include G3 Fax, asynchronous data, and the government's STU-3 secure voice system, and future data services such as ISDN. We address a common architecture and a limited set of issues that are key to interoperable mobile data services. We believe that common mobile data standards will both improve the quality of data service and simplify the systems for manufacturers, data users, and service providers

    Learning Mobile Communications Standards through Flexible Software Defined Radio Base Stations

    Mobile communications are today widespread and contribute to the development of our society. Every day new devices include some means of wireless transmission, which is becoming ubiquitous with the Internet of Things. These systems are standardized by international organizations such as the IEEE, 3GPP, and ETSI, among others. Even though knowledge of wireless standards is key to the understanding of these systems, wireless communications are quite often taught in engineering degrees in a traditional way, without much emphasis on the standardization. Moreover, strong focus is often placed on the theoretical performance analysis rather than on practical implementation aspects. In contrast, most of the current applications make extensive use of mobile data, and the global users' satisfaction is highly correlated with the mobile data throughput. Thus, modern wireless engineers need to have deep insight on the standards that define the mobile transmission systems, and this knowledge is not acquired following the traditional theoretical teaching schemes. In this article, a new learning approach is described. This novel paradigm is based on a new flexible hardware/software platform (FRAMED-SOFT), which is also detailed. Although the article is focused on two wireless standards, GSM and UMTS, the work discussed in this article can easily be extended to other standards of interest, such as LTE and beyond, WiFi, and WiMAX

    Efficient Channelization for PMR+4G and GSM Re-Farming Base Stations

    Current trends in mobile communications look for a better usage of the frequency spectrum by diverging from the classic frequency bands division for each standard. Instead, sharing a same frequency band by several mobile standards has been motivated by several factors: under-utilisation of some frequency bands, better electromagnetic propagation properties and provision of new capabilities to existing standards. This new way to manage the electromagnetic spectrum has an influence in the devices which form the mobile radio interface: base stations and mobiles stations. In particular for base stations, channelization represents an important challenge. In this paper efficient channelization techniques are proposed as a practical solution for real world professional and commercial mobile communication cases where frequency bands are shared. Depending on each case, the most optimal solution is based on the application of one of these channelization techniques, or a combination of several of them

    In this article is briefly reviewed the history of wireless cellular mobile communications, examined the progress in current second generation (2G) cellular standards and discussed their migration to the third generation (3G). The European 2G cellular standard GSM and its evolution phases GPRS and EDGE are described somewhat in detail. The third generation standard UMTS taking up on GSM/GPRS core network and equipped with a new advanced access network on the basis of code division multiple access (CDMA) is investigated too.     This audit assessed how Information and Communications Technology systems and processes are used to deliver an emergency service response. Overview Victorians rely on emergency services organisations during emergencies and crisis incidents, and expect a prompt and efficient response to any emergency. This audit assessed how Information and Communications Technology systems and processes are used to deliver an emergency service response. The Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) plays a critical role by taking calls for emergency assistance and dispatching emergency service resources to an incident. Performance is measured against Inspector-General for Emergency Management determined standards. The audit found that when all systems are working, ESTA is meeting call-taking standards but is consistently failing to meet its emergency ambulance dispatch standards. A computer aided dispatch system (CAD) is central to ESTA’s operations. However, when CAD fails, the backup manual card-based process is inadequate. The audit also found that, except for the StateNet Mobile Radio rural communications network, radio systems are modern with up to date technology. However, police channels on the Metropolitan Mobile Radio network can become congested at peak times and when Protective Service Officers are on duty at railway stations. A modern data network is installed in all metropolitan ambulances, but only 30 per cent of operational police vehicles. A new digital radio network for the Country Fire Authority is operating satisfactorily, but should be extended to all other emergency service organisations to overcome the limitations of the analogue rural network.&nbsp

The goal of the study is to reveal the experience of implementing mobile learning based on the example of teaching the “Fundamentals of Leadership” course.     A Reconfigurable Outer Modem Platform for Future Communications Systems

    Future mobile and wireless communications networks require flexible modem architectures with high performance. Efficient utilization of application specific flexibility is key to fulfill these requirements. For high throughput a single processor can not provide the necessary computational power. Hence multi-processor architectures become necessary. This paper presents a multi-processor platform based on a new dynamically reconfigurable application specific instruction set processor (dr-ASIP) for the application domain of channel decoding. Inherently parallel decoding tasks can be mapped onto individual processing nodes. The implied challenging inter-processor communication is efficiently handled by a Network-on-Chip (NoC) such that the throughput of each node is not degraded. The dr-ASIP features Viterbi and Log-MAP decoding for support of convolutional and turbo codes of more than 10 currently specified mobile and wireless standards. Furthermore, its flexibility allows for adaptation to future systems

    Design of DMRS schemes for 5G vehicular communications

LTE introduced a sidelink radio interface through which user equipment would communicate directly with no necessary dependence on the network, named PC5. 5G has defined its own sidelink interface, NR-Sidelink, envisaged to improve PC5. This paper analyses the use of Demodulation Reference Signals (DMRS) to estimate the channel in sidelink communications. Improving several mappings proposed by the standards, the main contribution proposed in this paper is a new DMRS mapping with a better performance.
