    Interpreting patient descriptions using distantly supervised similar case retrieval

    Biomedical natural language processing often involves the interpretation of patient descriptions, for instance for diagnosis or for recommending treatments. Current methods, based on biomedical language models, have been found to struggle with such tasks. Moreover, retrieval augmented strategies have only had limited success, as it is rare to find sentences which express the exact type of knowledge that is needed for interpreting a given patient description. For this reason, rather than attempting to retrieve explicit medical knowledge, we instead propose to rely on a nearest neighbour strategy. First, we retrieve text passages that are similar to the given patient description, and are thus likely to describe patients in similar situations, while also mentioning some hypothesis (e.g.\ a possible diagnosis of the patient). We then judge the likelihood of the hypothesis based on the similarity of the retrieved passages. Identifying similar cases is challenging, however, as descriptions of similar patients may superficially look rather different, among others because they often contain an abundance of irrelevant details. To address this challenge, we propose a strategy that relies on a distantly supervised cross-encoder. Despite its conceptual simplicity, we find this strategy to be effective in practice

Improves access and proactively recommends relevant information to each user, based on preferences and objectives. During the implementation and planning phases, designers have to cope with several issues and challenges that need proper attention. This thesis aims to show the issues and challenges in developing high-quality recommender systems. A paper solves a current research problem in the field of job recommendations using a distributed algorithmic framework built on top of Spark for parallel computation which allows the algorithm to scale linearly with the growing number of users. The final solution consists of two different recommenders which could be utilised for different purposes. The first method is mainly driven by latent topics among users, meanwhile the second technique utilises a latent factor algorithm that directly addresses the preference-confidence paradigm

    JURI SAYS:An Automatic Judgement Prediction System for the European Court of Human Rights

    In this paper we present the web platform JURI SAYS that automatically predicts decisions of the European Court of Human Rights based on communicated cases, which are published by the court early in the proceedings and are often available many years before the final decision is made. Our system therefore predicts future judgements of the court. The platform is available at jurisays.com and shows the predictions compared to the actual decisions of the court. It is automatically updated every month by including the prediction for the new cases. Additionally, the system highlights the sentences and paragraphs that are most important for the prediction (i.e. violation vs. no violation of human rights)

    Persuasiveness of social robot ‘Nao’ based on gaze and proximity

    Social Robots have widely infiltrated the retail and public space. Mainly, social robots are being utilized across a wide range of scenarios to influence decision making, disseminate information, and act as a signage mechanism, under the umbrella of Persuasive Robots or Persuasive Technology. While there have been several studies in the afore-mentioned area, the effect of non-verbal behaviour on persuasive abilities is generally unexplored. Therefore, in this research, we report whether two key non-verbal attributes, namely proximity and gaze, can elicit persuasively, compliance, and specific personality appeals. For this, we conducted a 2 (eye gaze) x 2 (proximity) between-subjects experiment where participants viewed a video-based scenario of the Nao robot. Our initial results did not reveal any significant results based on the non-verbal attributes. However, perceived compliance and persuasion were significantly correlated with knowledge, responsiveness, and trustworthiness. In conclusion, we discuss how the design of a robot could make it more convincing as extensive marketing and brand promotion companies could use robots to enhance their advertisement operations
