New Free Distance Bounds and Design Techniques for Joint Source-Channel Variable-Length Codes
International audienceThis paper proposes branch-and-prune algorithms for searching prefix-free joint source-channel codebooks with maximal free distance for given codeword lengths. For that purpose, it introduces improved techniques to bound the free distance of variable-length codes
On palimpsests in neural memory: an information theory viewpoint
The finite capacity of neural memory and the
reconsolidation phenomenon suggest it is important to be able
to update stored information as in a palimpsest, where new
information overwrites old information. Moreover, changing
information in memory is metabolically costly. In this paper, we
suggest that information-theoretic approaches may inform the
fundamental limits in constructing such a memory system. In
particular, we define malleable coding, that considers not only
representation length but also ease of representation update,
thereby encouraging some form of recycling to convert an old
codeword into a new one. Malleability cost is the difficulty of
synchronizing compressed versions, and malleable codes are of
particular interest when representing information and modifying
the representation are both expensive. We examine the tradeoff
between compression efficiency and malleability cost, under a
malleability metric defined with respect to a string edit distance.
This introduces a metric topology to the compressed domain. We
characterize the exact set of achievable rates and malleability as
the solution of a subgraph isomorphism problem. This is all done
within the optimization approach to biology framework.Accepted manuscrip
Labeling Diversity for 2x2 WLAN Coded-Cooperative Networks
Labelling diversity is an efficient technique recently proposed in the literature and aims to improve the bit error rate(BER) performance of wireless local area network (WLAN) systems with two transmit and two receive antennas without increasing the transmit power and bandwidth requirements. In this paper, we employ labelling diversity with different space-time channel codes such as convolutional, turbo and low density parity check (LDPC) for both point-to-point and coded-cooperative communication scenarios. Joint iterative decoding schemes for distributed turbo and LDPC codes are also presented. BER performance bounds at an error floor (EF) region are derived and verified with the help of numerical simulations for both cooperative and non-cooperative schemes. Numerical simulations show that the coded-cooperative schemes with labelling diversity achieve better BER performances and use of labelling diversity at the source node significantly lowers relay outage probability and hence the overall BER performance of the coded-cooperative scheme is improved manifolds
Asymptotic Estimates in Information Theory with Non-Vanishing Error Probabilities
This monograph presents a unified treatment of single- and multi-user
problems in Shannon's information theory where we depart from the requirement
that the error probability decays asymptotically in the blocklength. Instead,
the error probabilities for various problems are bounded above by a
non-vanishing constant and the spotlight is shone on achievable coding rates as
functions of the growing blocklengths. This represents the study of asymptotic
estimates with non-vanishing error probabilities.
In Part I, after reviewing the fundamentals of information theory, we discuss
Strassen's seminal result for binary hypothesis testing where the type-I error
probability is non-vanishing and the rate of decay of the type-II error
probability with growing number of independent observations is characterized.
In Part II, we use this basic hypothesis testing result to develop second- and
sometimes, even third-order asymptotic expansions for point-to-point
communication. Finally in Part III, we consider network information theory
problems for which the second-order asymptotics are known. These problems
include some classes of channels with random state, the multiple-encoder
distributed lossless source coding (Slepian-Wolf) problem and special cases of
the Gaussian interference and multiple-access channels. Finally, we discuss
avenues for further research.Comment: Further comments welcom
Self-concatenated code design and its application in power-efficient cooperative communications
In this tutorial, we have focused on the design of binary self-concatenated coding schemes with the help of EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts and Union bound analysis. The design methodology of future iteratively decoded self-concatenated aided cooperative communication schemes is presented. In doing so, we will identify the most important milestones in the area of channel coding, concatenated coding schemes and cooperative communication systems till date and suggest future research directions
A MILP approach for designing robust variable-length codes based on exact free distance computation
International audienceThis paper addresses the design of joint source-channel variable-length codes with maximal free distance for given codeword lengths. While previous design methods are mainly based on bounds on the free distance of the code, the proposed algorithm exploits an exact characterization of the free distance. The code optimization is cast in the framework of mixed-integer linear programming and allows to tackle practical alphabet sizes in reasonable computing time
