âBrave New Worldâ: The New Q, Masculinity, and the Craig Era Bond Films
This article examines the significance of the new Q in Skyfall (Dir. Sam Mendes, 2012) and Spectre (Dir. Sam Mendes, 2015). It explores some of the ways that the new take on Q in the Craig era has not only adapted the dynamic between Bond and the MI6 gadget-master by turning him into a young tech geek, but also speaks volumes about masculinity and the Bond franchise

Prunes and posses: Individuation and team cohesion in Silent Witness
© Edinburgh University Press. Silent Witness (BBC, 1996-) is a long-running and successful forensic crime drama. Although academic attention to the series has thus far focused on the iconic original protagonist Sam Ryan (Amanda Burton), an intriguing period featuring a team of three protagonists followed her departure in 2004. This article analyses this 'team era' of Silent Witness, suggesting that these later series can use their new team dynamics to dramatise a tension between individualism and communality. Until 2012, Silent Witness developed this team's bond, yet also occasionally created tension between an individual protagonist and the team - disrupting the latter's normative cohesion. To demonstrate this, this article provides a close analysis of character interaction in the team era episode 'Body of Work' (2006, series 10, episodes 5 and 6). While describing the patterns of individuation and team cohesion found therein, it also explores their connection to innovations in aesthetics and cumulative narration and to a wider cultural tension in popular neo-liberal thought. The article then indicates how such innovations have affected the series' potential ideological significance and suggests wider applications of this approach for other post-millennial British television crime teams
O âATEĂSMO NEW AGEâ? MORALIDADE E ESPIRITUALIDADE EM SAM HARRIS
This paper intents to discuss some aspects of the doctoral thesis in advance entitled âUma âNova Eraâ no ateĂsmo: ciĂȘncia moderna, espiritualidade e desencantamento religioso na perspectiva de Sam Harrisâ (A âNew Ageâ in the atheism: modern science, spirituality and religious disenchantment in the Sam Harrisâ perspective). The contour settled in this article plans to research the relations between the views of the philosopher and neuroscientist Sam Harris and the practices known as the New Age. Searching for morality and spirituality apart from religious influence and science-based, the author base his discussions in elements and discussions recurring at New Ageâs circles, promoting a so-called influence, intentionally or not, from the New Ageâs ideas in his works.O presente trabalho procura discutir certos aspectos da tese de doutorado em andamento intitulada âUma âNova Eraâ no ateĂsmo: ciĂȘncia moderna, espiritualidade e desencantamento religioso na perspectiva de Sam Harrisâ.
The London Anti-Corruption Summit: one good day is not enough
Issues of financial secrecy took centre-stage at the anti-corruption summit in London on 12 May. Sam Power reviews the progress made, arguing that the summit was a small step in the right direction, but by no means the dawn of a new era. With the limelight on the anti-corruption talks already fading away, the summitâs success will ultimately depend on the process for translating reforms into action
Zero-Shot Segmentation of Eye Features Using the Segment Anything Model (SAM)
The advent of foundation models signals a new era in artificial intelligence.
The Segment Anything Model (SAM) is the first foundation model for image
segmentation. In this study, we evaluate SAM's ability to segment features from
eye images recorded in virtual reality setups. The increasing requirement for
annotated eye-image datasets presents a significant opportunity for SAM to
redefine the landscape of data annotation in gaze estimation. Our investigation
centers on SAM's zero-shot learning abilities and the effectiveness of prompts
like bounding boxes or point clicks. Our results are consistent with studies in
other domains, demonstrating that SAM's segmentation effectiveness can be
on-par with specialized models depending on the feature, with prompts improving
its performance, evidenced by an IoU of 93.34% for pupil segmentation in one
dataset. Foundation models like SAM could revolutionize gaze estimation by
enabling quick and easy image segmentation, reducing reliance on specialized
models and extensive manual annotation.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, submitted to ETRA 2024: ACM Symposium

The Antarctic Atmospheric Energy Budget. Part I: Climatology and Intraseasonal-to-Interannual Variability
The authors present a new, observationally based estimate of the atmospheric energy budget for the Antarctic polar cap (the region poleward of 70°S). This energy budget is constructed using state-of-the-art reanalysis products from ECMWF [the ECMWF Interim Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim)] and Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative fluxes for the period 2001â10. The climatological mean Antarctic energy budget is characterized by an approximate balance between the TOA net outgoing radiation and the horizontal convergence of atmospheric energy transport, with the net surface energy flux and atmospheric energy storage generally being small in comparison. Variability in the energy budget on intraseasonal-to-interannual time scales bears a strong signature of the southern annular mode (SAM), with El NiñoâSouthern Oscillation (ENSO) having a smaller impact. The energy budget framework is shown to be a useful alternative to the SAM for interpreting surface climate variability in the Antarctic region
