Magnification Control in Winner Relaxing Neural Gas

    Get PDF
An important goal in neural map learning, which can conveniently be accomplished by magnification control, is to achieve information optimal coding in the sense of information theory. In the present contribution we consider the winner relaxing approach for the neural gas network. Originally, winner relaxing learning is a slight modification of the self-organizing map learning rule that allows for adjustment of the magnification behavior by an a priori chosen control parameter. We transfer this approach to the neural gas algorithm. The magnification exponent can be calculated analytically for arbitrary dimension from a continuum theory, and the entropy of the resulting map is studied numerically conf irming the theoretical prediction. The influence of a diagonal term, which can be added without impacting the magnification, is studied numerically. This approach to maps of maximal mutual information is interesting for applications as the winner relaxing term only adds computational cost of same order and is easy to implement. In particular, it is not necessary to estimate the generally unknown data probability density as in other magnification control approaches.Comment: 14pages, 2 figure

Both cases of differentiable and nondifferentiable time-delays are considered, and the convex polytopic description is utilized to characterize the genetic network model uncertainties. By using a Lyapunov functional approach and linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques, the stability criteria for the uncertain delayed genetic networks are established in the form of LMIs, which can be readily verified by using standard numerical software. An important feature of the results reported here is that all the stability conditions are dependent on the upper and lower bounds of the delays, which is made possible by using up-to-date techniques for achieving delay dependence. Another feature of the results lies in that a novel Lyapunov functional dependent on the uncertain parameters is utilized, which renders the results to be potentially less conservative than those obtained via a fixed Lyapunov functional for the entire uncertainty domain. A genetic network example is employed to illustrate the applicability and usefulness of the developed theoretical results

Online indexing and clustering of social media data for emergency management

Social media becomes a vital part in our daily communication practice, creating a huge amount of data and covering different real-world situations. Currently, there is a tendency in making use of social media during emergency management and response. Most of this effort is performed by a huge number of volunteers browsing through social media data and preparing maps that can be used by professional first responders. Automatic analysis approaches are needed to directly support the response teams in monitoring and also understanding the evolution of facts in social media during an emergency situation. In this paper, we investigate the problem of real-time sub-events identification in social media data (i.e., Twitter, Flickr and YouTube) during emergencies. A processing framework is presented serving to generate situational reports/summaries from social media data. This framework relies in particular on online indexing and online clustering of media data streams. Online indexing aims at tracking the relevant vocabulary to capture the evolution of sub-events over time. Online clustering, on the other hand, is used to detect and update the set of sub-events using the indices built during online indexing. To evaluate the framework, social media data related to Hurricane Sandy 2012 was collected and used in a series of experiments. In particular some online indexing methods have been tested against a proposed method to show their suitability. Moreover, the quality of online clustering has been studied using standard clustering indices. Overall the framework provides a great opportunity for supporting emergency responders as demonstrated in real-world emergency exercises

Literature Review on Big Data Analytics Methods

Companies and industries are faced with a huge amount of raw data, which have information and knowledge in their hidden layer. Also, the format, size, variety, and velocity of generated data bring complexity for industries to apply them in an efficient and effective way. So, complexity in data analysis and interpretation incline organizations to deploy advanced tools and techniques to overcome the difficulties of managing raw data. Big data analytics is the advanced method that has the capability for managing data. It deploys machine learning techniques and deep learning methods to benefit from gathered data. In this research, the methods of both ML and DL have been discussed, and an ML/DL deployment model for IOT data has been proposed
