    Actuators and sensors for application in agricultural robots: A review

    In recent years, with the rapid development of science and technology, agricultural robots have gradually begun to replace humans, to complete various agricultural operations, changing traditional agricultural production methods. Not only is the labor input reduced, but also the production efficiency can be improved, which invariably contributes to the development of smart agriculture. This paper reviews the core technologies used for agricultural robots in non-structural environments. In addition, we review the technological progress of drive systems, control strategies, end-effectors, robotic arms, environmental perception, and other related systems. This research shows that in a non-structured agricultural environment, using cameras and light detection and ranging (LiDAR), as well as ultrasonic and satellite navigation equipment, and by integrating sensing, transmission, control, and operation, different types of actuators can be innovatively designed and developed to drive the advance of agricultural robots, to meet the delicate and complex requirements of agricultural products as operational objects, such that better productivity and standardization of agriculture can be achieved. In summary, agricultural production is developing toward a data-driven, standardized, and unmanned approach, with smart agriculture supported by actuator-driven-based agricultural robots. This paper concludes with a summary of the main existing technologies and challenges in the development of actuators for applications in agricultural robots, and the outlook regarding the primary development directions of agricultural robots in the near future

    Robotic Technologies for High-Throughput Plant Phenotyping: Contemporary Reviews and Future Perspectives

    Phenotyping plants is an essential component of any effort to develop new crop varieties. As plant breeders seek to increase crop productivity and produce more food for the future, the amount of phenotype information they require will also increase. Traditional plant phenotyping relying on manual measurement is laborious, time-consuming, error-prone, and costly. Plant phenotyping robots have emerged as a high-throughput technology to measure morphological, chemical and physiological properties of large number of plants. Several robotic systems have been developed to fulfill different phenotyping missions. In particular, robotic phenotyping has the potential to enable efficient monitoring of changes in plant traits over time in both controlled environments and in the field. The operation of these robots can be challenging as a result of the dynamic nature of plants and the agricultural environments. Here we discuss developments in phenotyping robots, and the challenges which have been overcome and others which remain outstanding. In addition, some perspective applications of the phenotyping robots are also presented. We optimistically anticipate that autonomous and robotic systems will make great leaps forward in the next 10 years to advance the plant phenotyping research into a new era

    Sensor-based Collision Avoidance System for the Walking Machine ALDURO

    This work presents a sensor system develop for the robot ALDURO (Antropomorphically Legged and Wheeled Duisburg Robot), in order to allow it to detect and avoid obstacles when moving in unstructured terrains. The robot is a large-scale hydraulically driven 4-legged walking-machine, developed at the Duisburg-Essen University, with 16 degrees of freedom at each leg and will be steered by an operator sitting in a cab on the robot body. The Cartesian operator instructions are processed by a control computer, which converts them into appropriate autonomous leg movements, what makes necessary that the robot automatically recognizes the obstacles (rock, trunks, holes, etc.) on its way, locates and avoids them. A system based on ultra-sound sensors was developed to carry this task on, but there are intrinsic problems with such sensors, concerning to their poor angular precision. To overcome that, a fuzzy model of the used ultra-sound sensor, based on the characteristics of the real one, was developed to include the uncertainties about the measures. A posterior fuzzy inference builds from the measured data a map of the robot’s surroundings, to be used as input to the navigation system. This whole sensor system was implemented at a test stand, where a real size leg of the robot is fully functional. The sensors are assembled in an I2C net, which uses a micro-controller as interface to the main controller (a personal computer). That enables to relieve the main controller of some data processing, which is carried by the microcontroller on. The sensor system was tested together with the fuzzy data inference, and different arrangements to the sensors and settings of the inference system were tried, in order to achieve a satisfactory result

    Enhanced vision-based localization and control for navigation of non-holonomic omnidirectional mobile robots in GPS-denied environments

    New Zealand’s economy relies on primary production to a great extent, where use of the technological advances can have a significant impact on the productivity. Robotics and automation can play a key role in increasing productivity in primary sector, leading to a boost in national economy. This thesis investigates novel methodologies for design, control, and navigation of a mobile robotic platform, aimed for field service applications, specifically in agricultural environments such as orchards to automate the agricultural tasks. The design process of this robotic platform as a non-holonomic omnidirectional mobile robot, includes an innovative integrated application of CAD, CAM, CAE, and RP for development and manufacturing of the platform. Robot Operating System (ROS) is employed for the optimum embedded software system design and development to enable control, sensing, and navigation of the platform. 3D modelling and simulation of the robotic system is performed through interfacing ROS and Gazebo simulator, aiming for off-line programming, optimal control system design, and system performance analysis. Gazebo simulator provides 3D simulation of the robotic system, sensors, and control interfaces. It also enables simulation of the world environment, allowing the simulated robot to operate in a modelled environment. The model based controller for kinematic control of the non-holonomic omnidirectional platform is tested and validated through experimental results obtained from the simulated and the physical robot. The challenges of the kinematic model based controller including the mathematical and kinematic singularities are discussed and the solution to enable an optimal kinematic model based controller is presented. The kinematic singularity associated with the non-holonomic omnidirectional robots is solved using a novel fuzzy logic based approach. The proposed approach is successfully validated and tested through the simulation and experimental results. Development of a reliable localization system is aimed to enable navigation of the platform in GPS-denied environments such as orchards. For this aim, stereo visual odometry (SVO) is considered as the core of the non-GPS localization system. Challenges of SVO are introduced and the SVO accumulative drift is considered as the main challenge to overcome. SVO drift is identified in form of rotational and translational drift. Sensor fusion is employed to improve the SVO rotational drift through the integration of IMU and SVO. A novel machine learning approach is proposed to improve the SVO translational drift using Neural-Fuzzy system and RBF neural network. The machine learning system is formulated as a drift estimator for each image frame, then correction is applied at that frame to avoid the accumulation of the drift over time. The experimental results and analyses are presented to validate the effectiveness of the methodology in improving the SVO accuracy. An enhanced SVO is aimed through combination of sensor fusion and machine learning methods to improve the SVO rotational and translational drifts. Furthermore, to achieve a robust non-GPS localization system for the platform, sensor fusion of the wheel odometry and the enhanced SVO is performed to increase the accuracy of the overall system, as well as the robustness of the non-GPS localization system.     Mechatronics, the synergistic blend of mechanics, electronics, and computer science, has evolved over the past twenty five years, leading to a novel stage of engineering design. By integrating the best design practices with the most advanced technologies, mechatronics aims at realizing high-quality products, guaranteeing at the same time a substantial reduction of time and costs of manufacturing. Mechatronic systems are manifold and range from machine components, motion generators, and power producing machines to more complex devices, such as robotic systems and transportation vehicles. With its twenty chapters, which collect contributions from many researchers worldwide, this book provides an excellent survey of recent work in the field of mechatronics with applications in various fields, like robotics, medical and assistive technology, human-machine interaction, unmanned vehicles, manufacturing, and education. We would like to thank all the authors who have invested a great deal of time to write such interesting chapters, which we are sure will be valuable to the readers. Chapters 1 to 6 deal with applications of mechatronics for the development of robotic systems. Medical and assistive technologies and human-machine interaction systems are the topic of chapters 7 to 13.Chapters 14 and 15 concern mechatronic systems for autonomous vehicles. Chapters 16-19 deal with mechatronics in manufacturing contexts. Chapter 20 concludes the book, describing a method for the installation of mechatronics education in schools

    Autonomous navigation of a wheeled mobile robot in farm settings

    This research is mainly about autonomously navigation of an agricultural wheeled mobile robot in an unstructured outdoor setting. This project has four distinct phases defined as: (i) Navigation and control of a wheeled mobile robot for a point-to-point motion. (ii) Navigation and control of a wheeled mobile robot in following a given path (path following problem). (iii) Navigation and control of a mobile robot, keeping a constant proximity distance with the given paths or plant rows (proximity-following). (iv) Navigation of the mobile robot in rut following in farm fields. A rut is a long deep track formed by the repeated passage of wheeled vehicles in soft terrains such as mud, sand, and snow. To develop reliable navigation approaches to fulfill each part of this project, three main steps are accomplished: literature review, modeling and computer simulation of wheeled mobile robots, and actual experimental tests in outdoor settings. First, point-to-point motion planning of a mobile robot is studied; a fuzzy-logic based (FLB) approach is proposed for real-time autonomous path planning of the robot in unstructured environment. Simulation and experimental evaluations shows that FLB approach is able to cope with different dynamic and unforeseen situations by tuning a safety margin. Comparison of FLB results with vector field histogram (VFH) and preference-based fuzzy (PBF) approaches, reveals that FLB approach produces shorter and smoother paths toward the goal in almost all of the test cases examined. Then, a novel human-inspired method (HIM) is introduced. HIM is inspired by human behavior in navigation from one point to a specified goal point. A human-like reasoning ability about the situations to reach a predefined goal point while avoiding any static, moving and unforeseen obstacles are given to the robot by HIM. Comparison of HIM results with FLB suggests that HIM is more efficient and effective than FLB. Afterward, navigation strategies are built up for path following, rut following, and proximity-following control of a wheeled mobile robot in outdoor (farm) settings and off-road terrains. The proposed system is composed of different modules which are: sensor data analysis, obstacle detection, obstacle avoidance, goal seeking, and path tracking. The capabilities of the proposed navigation strategies are evaluated in variety of field experiments; the results show that the proposed approach is able to detect and follow rows of bushes robustly. This action is used for spraying plant rows in farm field. Finally, obstacle detection and obstacle avoidance modules are developed in navigation system. These modules enables the robot to detect holes or ground depressions (negative obstacles), that are inherent parts of farm settings, and also over ground level obstacles (positive obstacles) in real-time at a safe distance from the robot. Experimental tests are carried out on two mobile robots (PowerBot and Grizzly) in outdoor and real farm fields. Grizzly utilizes a 3D-laser range-finder to detect objects and perceive the environment, and a RTK-DGPS unit for localization. PowerBot uses sonar sensors and a laser range-finder for obstacle detection. The experiments demonstrate the capability of the proposed technique in successfully detecting and avoiding different types of obstacles both positive and negative in variety of scenarios

    Vision-Based navigation system for unmanned aerial vehicles

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe main objective of this dissertation is to provide Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with a robust navigation system; in order to allow the UAVs to perform complex tasks autonomously and in real-time. The proposed algorithms deal with solving the navigation problem for outdoor as well as indoor environments, mainly based on visual information that is captured by monocular cameras. In addition, this dissertation presents the advantages of using the visual sensors as the main source of data, or complementing other sensors in providing useful information; in order to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the sensing purposes. The dissertation mainly covers several research topics based on computer vision techniques: (I) Pose Estimation, to provide a solution for estimating the 6D pose of the UAV. This algorithm is based on the combination of SIFT detector and FREAK descriptor; which maintains the performance of the feature points matching and decreases the computational time. Thereafter, the pose estimation problem is solved based on the decomposition of the world-to-frame and frame-to-frame homographies. (II) Obstacle Detection and Collision Avoidance, in which, the UAV is able to sense and detect the frontal obstacles that are situated in its path. The detection algorithm mimics the human behaviors for detecting the approaching obstacles; by analyzing the size changes of the detected feature points, combined with the expansion ratios of the convex hull constructed around the detected feature points from consecutive frames. Then, by comparing the area ratio of the obstacle and the position of the UAV, the method decides if the detected obstacle may cause a collision. Finally, the algorithm extracts the collision-free zones around the obstacle, and combining with the tracked waypoints, the UAV performs the avoidance maneuver. (III) Navigation Guidance, which generates the waypoints to determine the flight path based on environment and the situated obstacles. Then provide a strategy to follow the path segments and in an efficient way and perform the flight maneuver smoothly. (IV) Visual Servoing, to offer different control solutions (Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) and PID), based on the obtained visual information; in order to achieve the flight stability as well as to perform the correct maneuver; to avoid the possible collisions and track the waypoints. All the proposed algorithms have been verified with real flights in both indoor and outdoor environments, taking into consideration the visual conditions; such as illumination and textures. The obtained results have been validated against other systems; such as VICON motion capture system, DGPS in the case of pose estimate algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithms have been compared with several previous works in the state of the art, and are results proves the improvement in the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed algorithms. Finally, this dissertation concludes that the visual sensors have the advantages of lightweight and low consumption and provide reliable information, which is considered as a powerful tool in the navigation systems to increase the autonomy of the UAVs for real-world applications.El objetivo principal de esta tesis es proporcionar Vehiculos Aereos no Tripulados (UAVs) con un sistema de navegacion robusto, para permitir a los UAVs realizar tareas complejas de forma autonoma y en tiempo real. Los algoritmos propuestos tratan de resolver problemas de la navegacion tanto en ambientes interiores como al aire libre basandose principalmente en la informacion visual captada por las camaras monoculares. Ademas, esta tesis doctoral presenta la ventaja de usar sensores visuales bien como fuente principal de datos o complementando a otros sensores en el suministro de informacion util, con el fin de mejorar la precision y la robustez de los procesos de deteccion. La tesis cubre, principalmente, varios temas de investigacion basados en tecnicas de vision por computador: (I) Estimacion de la Posicion y la Orientacion (Pose), para proporcionar una solucion a la estimacion de la posicion y orientacion en 6D del UAV. Este algoritmo se basa en la combinacion del detector SIFT y el descriptor FREAK, que mantiene el desempeno del a funcion de puntos de coincidencia y disminuye el tiempo computacional. De esta manera, se soluciona el problema de la estimacion de la posicion basandose en la descomposicion de las homografias mundo a imagen e imagen a imagen. (II) Deteccion obstaculos y elusion colisiones, donde el UAV es capaz de percibir y detectar los obstaculos frontales que se encuentran en su camino. El algoritmo de deteccion imita comportamientos humanos para detectar los obstaculos que se acercan, mediante el analisis de la magnitud del cambio de los puntos caracteristicos detectados de referencia, combinado con los ratios de expansion de los contornos convexos construidos alrededor de los puntos caracteristicos detectados en frames consecutivos. A continuacion, comparando la proporcion del area del obstaculo y la posicion del UAV, el metodo decide si el obstaculo detectado puede provocar una colision. Por ultimo, el algoritmo extrae las zonas libres de colision alrededor del obstaculo y combinandolo con los puntos de referencia, elUAV realiza la maniobra de evasion. (III) Guiado de navegacion, que genera los puntos de referencia para determinar la trayectoria de vuelo basada en el entorno y en los obstaculos detectados que encuentra. Proporciona una estrategia para seguir los segmentos del trazado de una manera eficiente y realizar la maniobra de vuelo con suavidad. (IV) Guiado por Vision, para ofrecer soluciones de control diferentes (Control de Logica Fuzzy (FLC) y PID), basados en la informacion visual obtenida con el fin de lograr la estabilidad de vuelo, asi como realizar la maniobra correcta para evitar posibles colisiones y seguir los puntos de referencia. Todos los algoritmos propuestos han sido verificados con vuelos reales en ambientes exteriores e interiores, tomando en consideracion condiciones visuales como la iluminacion y las texturas. Los resultados obtenidos han sido validados con otros sistemas: como el sistema de captura de movimiento VICON y DGPS en el caso del algoritmo de estimacion de la posicion y orientacion. Ademas, los algoritmos propuestos han sido comparados con trabajos anteriores recogidos en el estado del arte con resultados que demuestran una mejora de la precision y la robustez de los algoritmos propuestos.     Global Localization based on Evolutionary Optimization Algorithms for Indoor and Underground Environments

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorA fully autonomous robot is defined by its capability to sense, understand and move within the environment to perform a specific task. These qualities are included within the concept of navigation. However, among them, a basic transcendent one is localization, the capacity of the system to know its position regarding its surroundings. Therefore, the localization issue could be defined as searching the robot’s coordinates and rotation angles within a known environment. In this thesis, the particular case of Global Localization is addressed, when no information about the initial position is known, and the robot relies only on its sensors. This work aims to develop several tools that allow the system to locate in the two most usual geometric map representations: occupancy maps and Point Clouds. The former divides the dimensional space into equally-sized cells coded with a binary value distinguishing between free and occupied space. Point Clouds define obstacles and environment features as a sparse set of points in the space, commonly measured through a laser sensor. In this work, various algorithms are presented to search for that position through laser measurements only, in contrast with more usual methods that combine external information with motion information of the robot, odometry. Therefore, the system is capable of finding its own position in indoor environments, with no necessity of external positioning and without the influence of the uncertainty that motion sensors typically induce. Our solution is addressed by implementing various stochastic optimization algorithms or Meta-heuristics, specifically those bio-inspired or commonly known as Evolutionary Algorithms. Inspired by natural phenomena, these algorithms are based on the evolution of a series of particles or population members towards a solution through the optimization of a cost or fitness function that defines the problem. The implemented algorithms are Differential Evolution, Particle Swarm Optimization, and Invasive Weed Optimization, which try to mimic the behavior of evolution through mutation, the movement of swarms or flocks of animals, and the colonizing behavior of invasive species of plants respectively. The different implementations address the necessity to parameterize these algorithms for a wide search space as a complete three-dimensional map, with exploratory behavior and the convergence conditions that terminate the search. The process is a recursive optimum estimation search, so the solution is unknown. These implementations address the optimum localization search procedure by comparing the laser measurements from the real position with the one obtained from each candidate particle in the known map. The cost function evaluates this similarity between real and estimated measurements and, therefore, is the function that defines the problem to optimize. The common approach in localization or mapping using laser sensors is to establish the mean square error or the absolute error between laser measurements as an optimization function. In this work, a different perspective is introduced by benefiting from statistical distance or divergences, utilized to describe the similarity between probability distributions. By modeling the laser sensor as a probability distribution over the measured distance, the algorithm can benefit from the asymmetries provided by these divergences to favor or penalize different situations. Hence, how the laser scans differ and not only how much can be evaluated. The results obtained in different maps, simulated and real, prove that the Global Localization issue is successfully solved through these methods, both in position and orientation. The implementation of divergence-based weighted cost functions provides great robustness and accuracy to the localization filters and optimal response before different sources and noise levels from sensor measurements, the environment, or the presence of obstacles that are not registered in the map.Lo que define a un robot completamente autónomo es su capacidad para percibir el entorno, comprenderlo y poder desplazarse en ´el para realizar las tareas encomendadas. Estas cualidades se engloban dentro del concepto de la navegación, pero entre todas ellas la más básica y de la que dependen en buena parte el resto es la localización, la capacidad del sistema de conocer su posición respecto al entorno que lo rodea. De esta forma el problema de la localización se podría definir como la búsqueda de las coordenadas de posición y los ángulos de orientación de un robot móvil dentro de un entorno conocido. En esta tesis se aborda el caso particular de la localización global, cuando no existe información inicial alguna y el sistema depende únicamente de sus sensores. El objetivo de este trabajo es el desarrollo de varias herramientas que permitan que el sistema encuentre la localización en la que se encuentra respecto a los dos tipos de mapa más comúnmente utilizados para representar el entorno: los mapas de ocupación y las nubes de puntos. Los primeros subdividen el espacio en celdas de igual tamaño cuyo valor se define de forma binaria entre espacio libre y ocupado. Las nubes de puntos definen los obstáculos como una serie dispersa de puntos en el espacio comúnmente medidos a través de un láser. En este trabajo se presentan varios algoritmos para la búsqueda de esa posición utilizando únicamente las medidas de este sensor láser, en contraste con los métodos más habituales que combinan información externa con información propia del movimiento del robot, la odometría. De esta forma el sistema es capaz de encontrar su posición en entornos interiores sin depender de posicionamiento externo y sin verse influenciado por la deriva típica que inducen los sensores de movimiento. La solución se afronta mediante la implementación de varios tipos de algoritmos estocásticos de optimización o Meta-heurísticas, en concreto entre los denominados bio-inspirados o comúnmente conocidos como Algoritmos Evolutivos. Estos algoritmos, inspirados en varios fenómenos de la naturaleza, se basan en la evolución de una serie de partículas o población hacia una solución en base a la optimización de una función de coste que define el problema. Los algoritmos implementados en este trabajo son Differential Evolution, Particle Swarm Optimization e Invasive Weed Optimization, que tratan de imitar el comportamiento de la evolución por mutación, el movimiento de enjambres o bandas de animales y la colonización por parte de especies invasivas de plantas respectivamente. Las distintas implementaciones abordan la necesidad de parametrizar estos algoritmos para un espacio de búsqueda muy amplio como es un mapa completo, con la necesidad de que su comportamiento sea muy exploratorio, así como las condiciones de convergencia que definen el fin de la búsqueda ya que al ser un proceso recursivo de estimación la solución no es conocida. Estos algoritmos plantean la forma de buscar la localización ´optima del robot mediante la comparación de las medidas del láser en la posición real con lo esperado en la posición de cada una de esas partículas teniendo en cuenta el mapa conocido. La función de coste evalúa esa semejanza entre las medidas reales y estimadas y por tanto, es la función que define el problema. Las funciones típicamente utilizadas tanto en mapeado como localización mediante el uso de sensores láser de distancia son el error cuadrático medio o el error absoluto entre distancia estimada y real. En este trabajo se presenta una perspectiva diferente, aprovechando las distancias estadísticas o divergencias, utilizadas para establecer la semejanza entre distribuciones probabilísticas. Modelando el sensor como una distribución de probabilidad entorno a la medida aportada por el láser, se puede aprovechar la asimetría de esas divergencias para favorecer o penalizar distintas situaciones. De esta forma se evalúa como difieren las medias y no solo cuanto. Los resultados obtenidos en distintos mapas tanto simulados como reales demuestran que el problema de la localización se resuelve con éxito mediante estos métodos tanto respecto al error de estimación de la posición como de la orientación del robot.
