Survey on Neuro-Fuzzy systems and their applications in technical diagnostics and measurement

    Get PDF
Both fuzzy logic, as the basis of many inference systems, and Neural Networks, as a powerful computational model for classification and estimation, have been used in many application fields since their birth. These two techniques are somewhat supplementary to each other in a way that what one is lacking of the other can provide. This led to the creation of Neuro-Fuzzy systems which utilize fuzzy logic to construct a complex model by extending the capabilities of Artificial Neural Networks. Generally speaking all type of systems that integrate these two techniques can be called Neuro-Fuzzy systems. Key feature of these systems is that they use input-output patterns to adjust the fuzzy sets and rules inside the model. The paper reviews the principles of a Neuro-Fuzzy system and the key methods presented in this field, furthermore provides survey on their applications for technical diagnostics and measurement. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd

Adaptive neuro-fuzzy model with fuzzy clustering for nonlinear prediction and control

Nonlinear systems have more complex manner and profoundness than linear systems. Thus, their analyses are much more difficult. This paper presents the use of neuro-fuzzy networks as means of implementing algorithms suitable for nonlinear black-box prediction and control. In engineering applications, two attractive tools have emerged recently. These two attractive tools are: the artificial neural networks and the fuzzy logic system. One area of particular importance is the design of networks capable of modeling and predicting the behavior of systems that involve complex, multi-variable processes. To illustrate the applicability of the neuro-fuzzy networks, a case study involving air-fuel ratio is presented here.Air- fuel ratio represents complex, nonlinear and stochastic behavior. To monitor the engine conditions, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is used to capture the nonlinear connections between the air- fuel ratio and control parameters such manifold air pressure, throttle position, manifold air temperature, engine temperature, engine speed, and injection opening time. This paper describes a fuzzy clustering method to initialize the ANFIS

Load forecasting has many applications for power systems, including energy purchasing and generation, load switching, contract evaluation, and infrastructure development. Load forecasting is a complex mathematical process characterized by random data and a multitude of input variables. To solve load forecasting, two different approaches are used, the traditional and the intelligent one.Intelligent systems have proved their efficiency in load forecasting domain. Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS) are a combination of two intelligent techniques where we can get neural networks and fuzzy logics advantages simultaneously. In this paper, we will forecast night load peak of Algerian power system using multivariate input adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) introducing the effect of the temperature and type of the day as input variables

Feasibility of Using Neuro-Fuzzy Subject-Specific Models for Functional Electrical Stimulation Induced Hand Movements

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a technique that artificially elicits muscle contractions and it is used to restore motor/sensory functions in both assistive and therapeutic applications. The use of multi-field surface electrodes is a novel popular approach in transcutaneous FES applications. Lately, hybrid systems that combine artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic have also been proposed for many applications in different areas. This paper presents the possibility of combining both approaches for obtaining subject-specific models of FES induced hand movements for grasping applications. Data of the hand and finger motion from two subjects affected by acquired brain injury were used to train two different approaches: coactive neuro-fuzzy inference system and recurrent fuzzy neural network. Preliminary results show that these approaches can be considered in modelling applications for their ability to learn and predict main characteristics of the system, as well as providing useful information from the original system that could be interpreted as subject-specific knowledge

Fuzzy Logic and Its Uses in Finance: A Systematic Review Exploring Its Potential to Deal with Banking Crises

    Get PDF
The major success of fuzzy logic in the field of remote control opened the door to its application in many other fields, including finance. However, there has not been an updated and comprehensive literature review on the uses of fuzzy logic in the financial field. For that reason, this study attempts to critically examine fuzzy logic as an effective, useful method to be applied to financial research and, particularly, to the management of banking crises. The data sources were Web of Science and Scopus, followed by an assessment of the records according to pre-established criteria and an arrangement of the information in two main axes: financial markets and corporate finance. A major finding of this analysis is that fuzzy logic has not yet been used to address banking crises or as an alternative to ensure the resolvability of banks while minimizing the impact on the real economy. Therefore, we consider this article relevant for supervisory and regulatory bodies, as well as for banks and academic researchers, since it opens the door to several new research axes on banking crisis analyses using artificial intelligence techniques
