Self-tuning run-time reconfigurable PID controller
Digital PID control algorithm is one of the most commonly used algorithms in the control systems area. This algorithm is very well known, it is simple, easily implementable in the computer control systems and most of all its operation is very predictable. Thus PID control has got well known impact on the control system behavior. However, in its simple form the controller have no reconfiguration support. In a case of the controlled system substantial changes (or the whole control environment, in the wider aspect, for example if the disturbances characteristics would change) it is not possible to make the PID controller robust enough. In this paper a new structure of digital PID controller is proposed, where the policy-based computing is used to equip the controller with the ability to adjust it's behavior according to the environmental changes. Application to the electro-oil evaporator which is a part of distillation installation is used to show the new controller structure in operation
Analysis and Application of Advanced Control Strategies to a Heating Element Nonlinear Model
open4siSustainable control has begun to stimulate research and development in a wide range of industrial communities particularly for systems that demand a high degree of reliability and availability (sustainability) and at the same time characterised by expensive and/or safety critical maintenance work.
For heating systems such as HVAC plants, clear conflict exists between ensuring a high degree of availability and reducing costly maintenance times.
HVAC systems have highly non-linear dynamics and a stochastic and uncontrollable driving force as input in the form of intake air speed, presenting an interesting challenge for modern control methods. Suitable control methods can provide sustainable maximisation of energy conversion efficiency over wider than normally expected air speeds and temperatures, whilst also giving a degree of “tolerance” to certain faults, providing an important impact on maintenance scheduling, e.g. by capturing the effects of some system faults before they become serious.This paper presents the design of different control strategies applied to a heating element nonlinear model. The description of this heating element was obtained exploiting a data driven and physically meaningful nonlinear continuous time model, which represents a test bed used in passive air conditioning for sustainable housing applications. This model has low complexity while achieving high simulation performance. The physical meaningfulness of the model provides an enhanced insight into the performance and functionality of the system. In return, this information can be used during the system simulation and improved model based and data driven control designs for tight temperature regulation. The main purpose of this study is thus to give several examples of viable and practical designs of control schemes with application to this heating element model. Moreover, extensive simulations and Monte Carlo analysis are the tools for assessing experimentally the main features of the proposed control schemes, in the presence of modelling and measurement errors. These developed control methods are also compared in order to evaluate advantages and drawbacks of the considered solutions. Intelligent Active Vibration Control for a Flexible Beam System

development of an intelligent active vibration control
(AVC) system. Evolutionary Genetic algorithms (GAs)
and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference system (ANFIS)
algorithms are used to develop mechanisms of an AVC
system, where the controller is designed on the basis of
optimal vibration suppression using the plant model. A
simulation platform of a flexible beam system in
transverse vibration using finite difference (FD) method
is considered to demonstrate the capabilities of the AVC
system using GAs and ANFIS. MATLAB GA tool box for
GAs and Fuzzy Logic tool box for ANFIS function are
used for AVC system design. The system is then
implemented, tested and its performance assessed for GAs
and ANFIS based design. Finally a comparative
performance of the algorithm in implementing AVC
system using GAs and ANFIS is presented and discussed
through a set of experiments
PAC: A Novel Self-Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Controller for Micro Aerial Vehicles
There exists an increasing demand for a flexible and computationally
efficient controller for micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) due to a high degree of
environmental perturbations. In this work, an evolving neuro-fuzzy controller,
namely Parsimonious Controller (PAC) is proposed. It features fewer network
parameters than conventional approaches due to the absence of rule premise
parameters. PAC is built upon a recently developed evolving neuro-fuzzy system
known as parsimonious learning machine (PALM) and adopts new rule growing and
pruning modules derived from the approximation of bias and variance. These rule
adaptation methods have no reliance on user-defined thresholds, thereby
increasing the PAC's autonomy for real-time deployment. PAC adapts the
consequent parameters with the sliding mode control (SMC) theory in the
single-pass fashion. The boundedness and convergence of the closed-loop control
system's tracking error and the controller's consequent parameters are
confirmed by utilizing the LaSalle-Yoshizawa theorem. Lastly, the controller's
efficacy is evaluated by observing various trajectory tracking performance from
a bio-inspired flapping-wing micro aerial vehicle (BI-FWMAV) and a rotary wing
micro aerial vehicle called hexacopter. Furthermore, it is compared to three
distinctive controllers. Our PAC outperforms the linear PID controller and
feed-forward neural network (FFNN) based nonlinear adaptive controller.
Compared to its predecessor, G-controller, the tracking accuracy is comparable,
but the PAC incurs significantly fewer parameters to attain similar or better

A novel technique for load frequency control of multi-area power systems
In this paper, an adaptive type-2 fuzzy controller is proposed to control the load frequency of a two-area power system based on descending gradient training and error back-propagation. The dynamics of the system are completely uncertain. The multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network structure is used to extract Jacobian and estimate the system model, and then, the estimated model is applied to the controller, online. A proportional–derivative (PD) controller is added to the type-2 fuzzy controller, which increases the stability and robustness of the system against disturbances. The adaptation, being real-time and independency of the system parameters are new features of the proposed controller. Carrying out simulations on New England 39-bus power system, the performance of the proposed controller is compared with the conventional PI, PID and internal model control based on PID (IMC-PID) controllers. Simulation results indicate that our proposed controller method outperforms the conventional controllers in terms of transient response and stability
Torque Ripple Minimization in a Switched Reluctance Drive by Neuro-Fuzzy Compensation
Simple power electronic drive circuit and fault tolerance of converter are
specific advantages of SRM drives, but excessive torque ripple has limited its
use to special applications. It is well known that controlling the current
shape adequately can minimize the torque ripple. This paper presents a new
method for shaping the motor currents to minimize the torque ripple, using a
neuro-fuzzy compensator. In the proposed method, a compensating signal is added
to the output of a PI controller, in a current-regulated speed control loop.
Numerical results are presented in this paper, with an analysis of the effects

Development of c-means Clustering Based Adaptive Fuzzy Controller for A Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle
Advanced and accurate modelling of a Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle (FW MAV)
and its control is one of the recent research topics related to the field of
autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). In this work, a four wing
Natureinspired (NI) FW MAV is modeled and controlled inspiring by its advanced
features like quick flight, vertical take-off and landing, hovering, and fast
turn, and enhanced manoeuvrability when contrasted with comparable-sized fixed
and rotary wing UAVs. The Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering algorithm is utilized
to demonstrate the NIFW MAV model, which has points of interest over first
principle based modelling since it does not depend on the system dynamics,
rather based on data and can incorporate various uncertainties like sensor
error. The same clustering strategy is used to develop an adaptive fuzzy
controller. The controller is then utilized to control the altitude of the NIFW
MAV, that can adapt with environmental disturbances by tuning the antecedent

This paper presents an investigation into the comparative performance of intelligent system identification and control algorithms within the framework of an active vibration control (AVC) system.
