    Cyclic proof systems for modal fixpoint logics

    This thesis is about cyclic and ill-founded proof systems for modal fixpoint logics, with and without explicit fixpoint quantifiers.Cyclic and ill-founded proof-theory allow proofs with infinite branches or paths, as long as they satisfy some correctness conditions ensuring the validity of the conclusion. In this dissertation we design a few cyclic and ill-founded systems: a cyclic one for the weak Grzegorczyk modal logic K4Grz, based on our explanation of the phenomenon of cyclic companionship; and ill-founded and cyclic ones for the full computation tree logic CTL* and the intuitionistic linear-time temporal logic iLTL. All systems are cut-free, and the cyclic ones for K4Grz and iLTL have fully finitary correctness conditions.Lastly, we use a cyclic system for the modal mu-calculus to obtain a proof of the uniform interpolation property for the logic which differs from the original, automata-based one

    Fragments and frame classes:Towards a uniform proof theory for modal fixed point logics

    This thesis studies the proof theory of modal fixed point logics. In particular, we construct proof systems for various fragments of the modal mu-calculus, interpreted over various classes of frames. With an emphasis on uniform constructions and general results, we aim to bring the relatively underdeveloped proof theory of modal fixed point logics closer to the well-established proof theory of basic modal logic. We employ two main approaches. First, we seek to generalise existing methods for basic modal logic to accommodate fragments of the modal mu-calculus. We use this approach for obtaining Hilbert-style proof systems. Secondly, we adapt existing proof systems for the modal mu-calculus to various classes of frames. This approach yields proof systems which are non-well-founded, or cyclic.The thesis starts with an introduction and some mathematical preliminaries. In Chapter 3 we give hypersequent calculi for modal logic with the master modality, building on work by Ori Lahav. This is followed by an Intermezzo, where we present an abstract framework for cyclic proofs, in which we give sufficient conditions for establishing the bounded proof property. In Chapter 4 we generalise existing work on Hilbert-style proof systems for PDL to the level of the continuous modal mu-calculus. Chapter 5 contains a novel cyclic proof system for the alternation-free two-way modal mu-calculus. Finally, in Chapter 6, we present a cyclic proof system for Guarded Kleene Algebra with Tests and take a first step towards using it to establish the completeness of an algebraic counterpart

    Investigating the learning potential of the Second Quantum Revolution: development of an approach for secondary school students

    In recent years we have witnessed important changes: the Second Quantum Revolution is in the spotlight of many countries, and it is creating a new generation of technologies. To unlock the potential of the Second Quantum Revolution, several countries have launched strategic plans and research programs that finance and set the pace of research and development of these new technologies (like the Quantum Flagship, the National Quantum Initiative Act and so on). The increasing pace of technological changes is also challenging science education and institutional systems, requiring them to help to prepare new generations of experts. This work is placed within physics education research and contributes to the challenge by developing an approach and a course about the Second Quantum Revolution. The aims are to promote quantum literacy and, in particular, to value from a cultural and educational perspective the Second Revolution. The dissertation is articulated in two parts. In the first, we unpack the Second Quantum Revolution from a cultural perspective and shed light on the main revolutionary aspects that are elevated to the rank of principles implemented in the design of a course for secondary school students, prospective and in-service teachers. The design process and the educational reconstruction of the activities are presented as well as the results of a pilot study conducted to investigate the impact of the approach on students' understanding and to gather feedback to refine and improve the instructional materials. The second part consists of the exploration of the Second Quantum Revolution as a context to introduce some basic concepts of quantum physics. We present the results of an implementation with secondary school students to investigate if and to what extent external representations could play any role to promote students’ understanding and acceptance of quantum physics as a personal reliable description of the world

    This fifth volume on Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion collects theoretical and applied contributions of researchers working in different fields of applications and in mathematics, and is available in open-access. The collected contributions of this volume have either been published or presented after disseminating the fourth volume in 2015 in international conferences, seminars, workshops and journals, or they are new. The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered. First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modified Proportional Conflict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classifiers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes. Because more applications of DSmT have emerged in the past years since the apparition of the fourth book of DSmT in 2015, the second part of this volume is about selected applications of DSmT mainly in building change detection, object recognition, quality of data association in tracking, perception in robotics, risk assessment for torrent protection and multi-criteria decision-making, multi-modal image fusion, coarsening techniques, recommender system, levee characterization and assessment, human heading perception, trust assessment, robotics, biometrics, failure detection, GPS systems, inter-criteria analysis, group decision, human activity recognition, storm prediction, data association for autonomous vehicles, identification of maritime vessels, fusion of support vector machines (SVM), Silx-Furtif RUST code library for information fusion including PCR rules, and network for ship classification. Finally, the third part presents interesting contributions related to belief functions in general published or presented along the years since 2015.     Stochastic Mathematical Systems

    We introduce a framework that can be used to model both mathematics and human reasoning about mathematics. This framework involves {stochastic mathematical systems} (SMSs), which are stochastic processes that generate pairs of questions and associated answers (with no explicit referents). We use the SMS framework to define normative conditions for mathematical reasoning, by defining a ``calibration'' relation between a pair of SMSs. The first SMS is the human reasoner, and the second is an ``oracle'' SMS that can be interpreted as deciding whether the question-answer pairs of the reasoner SMS are valid. To ground thinking, we understand the answers to questions given by this oracle to be the answers that would be given by an SMS representing the entire mathematical community in the infinite long run of the process of asking and answering questions. We then introduce a slight extension of SMSs to allow us to model both the physical universe and human reasoning about the physical universe. We then define a slightly different calibration relation appropriate for the case of scientific reasoning. In this case the first SMS represents a human scientist predicting the outcome of future experiments, while the second SMS represents the physical universe in which the scientist is embedded, with the question-answer pairs of that SMS being specifications of the experiments that will occur and the outcome of those experiments, respectively. Next we derive conditions justifying two important patterns of inference in both mathematical and scientific reasoning: i) the practice of increasing one's degree of belief in a claim as one observes increasingly many lines of evidence for that claim, and ii) abduction, the practice of inferring a claim's probability of being correct from its explanatory power with respect to some other claim that is already taken to hold for independent reasons.Comment: 43 pages of text, 6 pages of references, 11 pages of appendice

El ejercicio del razonamiento es un elemento esencial en el envejecimento activo y en esta asignatura, en primer lugar, se estudia la fundamentación del alcance de los distintos tipos de razonamiento sobre la mente que envejece. En segundo lugar se aportan simplificadamente los instrumentos técnicos de producción y evaluación de razonamientos de tipo deductivo, probabilístico, ordinario, rebatible, y práctico. Finalmente, en tercer lugar, se elaboran para los profesionales cuadernos de razonamiento que se integran en programas de envejecimiento activo. La labor de fundamentación teórica se resume en (1).     Plithogenic sets coined by Smarandache in the year 2018 has unveiled new research opportunities in the field of Multi criteria decision making (MCDM). The contributions and developments of new decision making approaches based on plithogeny is gaining high momentum presently. The theoretical conceptualization of different phenomenon with plithogenic sets are also applied in designing optimal solutions to the decision making problems. This review paper presents the applications of plithogenic MCDM from the year 2018 to till date in almost all the spheres of decision making scenario. The literature works of the researchers presented in this paper will certainly portray the compatibility and flexibility of plithogenic sets, operators and other decision making tools. Though the time span considered for counting on the plithogeny based works is short, the applications of plithogenic sets are growing many in number and also plithogeny based theories are amplifying in a speedy manner. This has motivated the authors to investigate on the proliferation of plithogeny applications in decision making. This review paper has focused on the dimensions of different fields to which plithogeny is applied, new plithogeny based theories, extension of plithogeny, plithogenic based operators and measures. In addition to it the data on the publications of plithogeny based articles and interests of researchers are also presented as a part of this review work. The overall impact of plithogeny in the arena of decision making science and on the researchers of the same field is well sketched in this paper with the intention and hope of inspiring plithogenic researchers

    Multicriteria Consensus Models to Support Intelligent Group Decision-Making

    The development of intelligent systems is progressing rapidly, thanks to advances in information technology that enable collective, automated, and effective decision-making based on information collected from diverse sources. Group decision-making (GDM) is a key part of intelligent decision-making (IDM), which has received considerable attention in recent years. IDM through GDM refers to a decision-making problem where a group of intelligent decision-makers (DMs) evaluate a set of alternatives with respect to specific attributes. Intelligent communication among DMs aims to give orders to the available alternatives. However, GDM models developed for IDM must incorporate consensus support models to effectively integrate input from each DM into the final decision. Many efforts have been made to design consensus models to support IDM, depending on the decision problem or environment. Despite promising results, significant gaps remain in research on the design of such support models. One major drawback of existing consensus models is their dependence on the type of decision environment, making them less generalizable. Moreover, these models are often static and cannot respond to dynamic changes in the decision environment. Another limitation is that consensus models for large-scale decision environments lack an efficient communication regime to enable DM interactions. To address these challenges, this dissertation proposes developing consensus models to support IDM through GDM. To address the generalization issue of existing consensus models, reinforcement learning (RL) is proposed. RL agents can be built on the Markov decision process to enable IDM, potentially removing the generalization issue of consensus support models. Contrary to most consensus models, which assume static decision environments, this dissertation proposes a computationally efficient dynamic consensus model to support dynamic IDM. Finally, to facilitate secure and efficient interactions among intelligent DMs in large-scale problems, Blockchain technology is proposed to speed up the consensus process. The proposed communication regime also includes trust-building mechanisms that employ Blockchain protocols to remove enduring and limitative assumptions on opinion similarity among agents
