    Neural-Networks Control for Hover to High-Speed-Level-Flight Transition of Ducted Fan UAV With Provable Stability

    In this paper, we focus on the transition control of a ducted fan vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). To achieve a steady transition from hover to high-speed flight, a neural-networks-based controller is proposed to learn the system dynamics and compensate for the tracking error between the aircraft dynamics and the desired dynamic performance. In prior, we derive the nonlinear system model of the aircraft full-envelope dynamics. Then, we propose a novel neural-networks-based control scheme and apply it on the underactuated aircraft system. Key features of the proposed controller consist of projection operator, state predictor and dynamic-formed adaptive input. It is proved and guaranteed that the tracking errors of both state predictor and neural-networks weights are upper bounded during the whole neural-networks learning procedure. The very adaptive input is formed into a dynamic structure that helps achieve a reliable fast convergence performance of the proposed controller, especially in high-frequency disturbance conditions. Consequently, the closed-loop system of the aircraft is able to track a certain trajectory with desired dynamic performance. Satisfactory results are obtained from both simulations and practical flight test in accomplishing the designed flight course

    Validation of Quad Tail-sitter VTOL UAV Model in Fixed Wing Mode

    Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) is a type of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that is growing rapidly because its ability to take off and land anywhere in tight spaces. One type of VTOL UAV, the tail-sitter, has the best efficiency. However, besides the efficiency offered, some challenges must still be overcome, including the complexity of combining the ability to hover like a helicopter and fly horizontally like a fixed-wing aircraft. This research has two contributions: in the form of how the analytical model is generated and the tools used (specifically for the small VTOL quad tail-sitter UAV) and how to utilize off-the-shelf components for UAV empirical modeling. This research focuses on increasing the speed and accuracy of the UAV VTOL control design in fixed-wing mode. The first step is to carry out analysis and simulation. The model is analytically obtained using OpenVSP in longitudinal and lateral modes. The next step is to realize this analytical model for both the aircraft and the controls. The third step is to measure the flight characteristics of the aircraft. Based on the data recorded during flights, an empirical model is made using system identification technique. The final step is to vali-date the analytical model with the empirical model. The results show that the characteristics of the analytical mode fulfill the specified requirements and are close to the empirical model. Thus, it can be concluded that the analytical model can be implemented directly, and consequently, the VTOL UAV design and development process has been shortened

    Using learning from demonstration to enable automated flight control comparable with experienced human pilots

    Modern autopilots fall under the domain of Control Theory which utilizes Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controllers that can provide relatively simple autonomous control of an aircraft such as maintaining a certain trajectory. However, PID controllers cannot cope with uncertainties due to their non-adaptive nature. In addition, modern autopilots of airliners contributed to several air catastrophes due to their robustness issues. Therefore, the aviation industry is seeking solutions that would enhance safety. A potential solution to achieve this is to develop intelligent autopilots that can learn how to pilot aircraft in a manner comparable with experienced human pilots. This work proposes the Intelligent Autopilot System (IAS) which provides a comprehensive level of autonomy and intelligent control to the aviation industry. The IAS learns piloting skills by observing experienced teachers while they provide demonstrations in simulation. A robust Learning from Demonstration approach is proposed which uses human pilots to demonstrate the task to be learned in a flight simulator while training datasets are captured. The datasets are then used by Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to generate control models automatically. The control models imitate the skills of the experienced pilots when performing the different piloting tasks while handling flight uncertainties such as severe weather conditions and emergency situations. Experiments show that the IAS performs learned skills and tasks with high accuracy even after being presented with limited examples which are suitable for the proposed approach that relies on many single-hidden-layer ANNs instead of one or few large deep ANNs which produce a black-box that cannot be explained to the aviation regulators. The results demonstrate that the IAS is capable of imitating low-level sub-cognitive skills such as rapid and continuous stabilization attempts in stormy weather conditions, and high-level strategic skills such as the sequence of sub-tasks necessary to takeoff, land, and handle emergencies

    Multi-robot coordination and safe learning using barrier certificates

    The objective of this research is to develop a formal safety framework for collision-free and connectivity sustained motion in multi-robot coordination and learning based control. This safety framework is designed with barrier certificates, which provably guarantee the safety of dynamical systems based on the set invariance principle. The barrier certificates are enforced on the system using an online optimization-based controller such that minimal changes to the existing control strategies are required to guarantee safety. The proposed safety barrier certificates are validated on real multi-robot systems consisting of multiple Khepera robots, Magellan Pro robot, GRITS-Bots, and Crazyflie quadrotors.Ph.D
