Meso-scale FDM material layout design strategies under manufacturability constraints and fracture conditions
In the manufacturability-driven design (MDD) perspective, manufacturability of the product or system is the most important of the design requirements. In addition to being able to ensure that complex designs (e.g., topology optimization) are manufacturable with a given process or process family, MDD also helps mechanical designers to take advantage of unique process-material effects generated during manufacturing. One of the most recognizable examples of this comes from the scanning-type family of additive manufacturing (AM) processes; the most notable and familiar member of this family is the fused deposition modeling (FDM) or fused filament fabrication (FFF) process. This process works by selectively depositing uniform, approximately isotropic beads or elements of molten thermoplastic material (typically structural engineering plastics) in a series of pre-specified traces to build each layer of the part. There are many interesting 2-D and 3-D mechanical design problems that can be explored by designing the layout of these elements. The resulting structured, hierarchical material (which is both manufacturable and customized layer-by-layer within the limits of the process and material) can be defined as a manufacturing process-driven structured material (MPDSM). This dissertation explores several practical methods for designing these element layouts for 2-D and 3-D meso-scale mechanical problems, focusing ultimately on design-for-fracture. Three different fracture conditions are explored: (1) cases where a crack must be prevented or stopped, (2) cases where the crack must be encouraged or accelerated, and (3) cases where cracks must grow in a simple pre-determined pattern. Several new design tools, including a mapping method for the FDM manufacturability constraints, three major literature reviews, the collection, organization, and analysis of several large (qualitative and quantitative) multi-scale datasets on the fracture behavior of FDM-processed materials, some new experimental equipment, and the refinement of a fast and simple g-code generator based on commercially-available software, were developed and refined to support the design of MPDSMs under fracture conditions. The refined design method and rules were experimentally validated using a series of case studies (involving both design and physical testing of the designs) at the end of the dissertation. Finally, a simple design guide for practicing engineers who are not experts in advanced solid mechanics nor process-tailored materials was developed from the results of this project.U of I OnlyAuthor's request
Fast Charging of Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Deep Bayesian Optimization with Recurrent Neural Network
Fast charging has attracted increasing attention from the battery community
for electrical vehicles (EVs) to alleviate range anxiety and reduce charging
time for EVs. However, inappropriate charging strategies would cause severe
degradation of batteries or even hazardous accidents. To optimize fast-charging
strategies under various constraints, particularly safety limits, we propose a
novel deep Bayesian optimization (BO) approach that utilizes Bayesian recurrent
neural network (BRNN) as the surrogate model, given its capability in handling
sequential data. In addition, a combined acquisition function of expected
improvement (EI) and upper confidence bound (UCB) is developed to better
balance the exploitation and exploration. The effectiveness of the proposed
approach is demonstrated on the PETLION, a porous electrode theory-based
battery simulator. Our method is also compared with the state-of-the-art BO
methods that use Gaussian process (GP) and non-recurrent network as surrogate
models. The results verify the superior performance of the proposed fast
charging approaches, which mainly results from that: (i) the BRNN-based
surrogate model provides a more precise prediction of battery lifetime than
that based on GP or non-recurrent network; and (ii) the combined acquisition
function outperforms traditional EI or UCB criteria in exploring the optimal
charging protocol that maintains the longest battery lifetime
Neural Architecture Search: Insights from 1000 Papers
In the past decade, advances in deep learning have resulted in breakthroughs
in a variety of areas, including computer vision, natural language
understanding, speech recognition, and reinforcement learning. Specialized,
high-performing neural architectures are crucial to the success of deep
learning in these areas. Neural architecture search (NAS), the process of
automating the design of neural architectures for a given task, is an
inevitable next step in automating machine learning and has already outpaced
the best human-designed architectures on many tasks. In the past few years,
research in NAS has been progressing rapidly, with over 1000 papers released
since 2020 (Deng and Lindauer, 2021). In this survey, we provide an organized
and comprehensive guide to neural architecture search. We give a taxonomy of
search spaces, algorithms, and speedup techniques, and we discuss resources
such as benchmarks, best practices, other surveys, and open-source libraries
Quantifying the retention of emotions across story retellings
Story retelling is a fundamental medium for the transmission of information between individuals and among social groups. Besides conveying factual information, stories also contain affective information. Though natural language processing techniques have advanced considerably in recent years, the extent to which machines can be trained to identify and track emotions across retellings is unknown. This study leverages the powerful RoBERTa model, based on a transformer architecture, to derive emotion-rich story embeddings from a unique dataset of 25,728 story retellings. The initial stories were centered around five emotional events (joy, sadness, embarrassment, risk, and disgust—though the stories did not contain these emotion words) and three intensities (high, medium, and low). Our results indicate (1) that RoBERTa can identify emotions in stories it was not trained on, (2) that the five emotions and their intensities are preserved when they are transmitted in the form of retellings, (3) that the emotions in stories are increasingly well-preserved as they experience additional retellings, and (4) that among the five emotions, risk and disgust are least well-preserved, compared with joy, sadness, and embarrassment. This work is a first step toward quantifying situation-driven emotions with machines
Countermeasures for the majority attack in blockchain distributed systems
Pretrained Embeddings for E-commerce Machine Learning: When it Fails and Why?
The use of pretrained embeddings has become widespread in modern e-commerce
machine learning (ML) systems. In practice, however, we have encountered
several key issues when using pretrained embedding in a real-world production
system, many of which cannot be fully explained by current knowledge.
Unfortunately, we find that there is a lack of a thorough understanding of how
pre-trained embeddings work, especially their intrinsic properties and
interactions with downstream tasks. Consequently, it becomes challenging to
make interactive and scalable decisions regarding the use of pre-trained
embeddings in practice.
Our investigation leads to two significant discoveries about using pretrained
embeddings in e-commerce applications. Firstly, we find that the design of the
pretraining and downstream models, particularly how they encode and decode
information via embedding vectors, can have a profound impact. Secondly, we
establish a principled perspective of pre-trained embeddings via the lens of
kernel analysis, which can be used to evaluate their predictability,
interactively and scalably. These findings help to address the practical
challenges we faced and offer valuable guidance for successful adoption of
pretrained embeddings in real-world production. Our conclusions are backed by
solid theoretical reasoning, benchmark experiments, as well as online testings
Hi4D: 4D Instance Segmentation of Close Human Interaction
We propose Hi4D, a method and dataset for the automatic analysis of
physically close human-human interaction under prolonged contact. Robustly
disentangling several in-contact subjects is a challenging task due to
occlusions and complex shapes. Hence, existing multi-view systems typically
fuse 3D surfaces of close subjects into a single, connected mesh. To address
this issue we leverage i) individually fitted neural implicit avatars; ii) an
alternating optimization scheme that refines pose and surface through periods
of close proximity; and iii) thus segment the fused raw scans into individual
instances. From these instances we compile Hi4D dataset of 4D textured scans of
20 subject pairs, 100 sequences, and a total of more than 11K frames. Hi4D
contains rich interaction-centric annotations in 2D and 3D alongside accurately
registered parametric body models. We define varied human pose and shape
estimation tasks on this dataset and provide results from state-of-the-art
methods on these benchmarks.Comment: Project page: https://yifeiyin04.github.io/Hi4D
Application of fuzzy controllers in automatic ship motion control systems
Automatic ship heading control is a part of the automatic navigation system. It is charged with the task of maintaining the actual ship’s course angle or actual ship’s course without human intervention in accordance with the set course or setting parameter and maintaining this condition under the effect of disturbing influences. Thus, the corrective influence on deviations from a course can be rendered by the position of a rudder or controlling influence that leads to the rotary movement of a vessel around a vertical axis that represents a problem, which can be solved with the use of fuzzy logic. In this paper, we propose to consider the estimation of the efficiency of fuzzy controllers in systems of automatic control of ship movement, obtained by analysis of a method of the formalized record of a logic conclusion and structure of the fuzzy controller. The realization of this allows to carry out effective stabilization of a course angle of a vessel taking into account existing restrictions
Examples of works to practice staccato technique in clarinet instrument
Klarnetin staccato tekniğini güçlendirme aşamaları eser çalışmalarıyla uygulanmıştır. Staccato
Sekiz özgün eser çalışmasının her
