Carbon Nanotube Gas Sensor Using Neural Networks
The need to identify the presence and quantify the concentrations of gases and vapors is ubiquitous in NASA missions and societal applications. Sensors for air quality monitoring in crew cabins and ISS have been actively under development (Ref. 1). In particular, measuring the concentration of CO2 and NH3 is important because high concentrations of these gases pose a risk to ISS crew health. Detection of fuel and oxidant leaks in crew vehicles is critical for ensuring mission safety. Accurate gas and vapor concentrations can be measured, but this typically requires bulky and expensive instrumentation. Recently, inexpensive sensors with low power demands have been fabricated for use on the International Space Station (ISS). Carbon Nanotube (CNT) based chemical sensors are one type of these sensors. CNT sensors meet the requirements for low cost and ease of fabrication for deployment on the ISS. However, converting the measured signal from the sensors to human readable indicators of atmospheric air quality and safety is challenging. This is because it is difficult to develop an analytical model that maps the CNT sensor output signal to gas concentration. Training a neural network on CNT sensor data to predict gas concentration is more effective than developing an analytic approach to calculate the concentration from the same data set. With this in mind a neural network was created to tackle this challenge of converting the measured signal into CO2 and NH3 concentration values
Intelligent identification of vehicle’s dynamics based on local model network
This paper proposes an intelligent approach for dynamic identification of the vehicles. The proposed approach is based on the data-driven identification and uses a high-performance local model network (LMN) for estimation of the vehicle’s longitudinal velocity, lateral acceleration and yaw rate. The proposed LMN requires no pre-defined standard vehicle model and uses measurement data to identify vehicle’s dynamics. The LMN is trained by hierarchical binary tree (HBT) learning algorithm, which results in a network with maximum generalizability and best linear or nonlinear structure. The proposed approach is applied to a measurement dataset, obtained from a Volvo V70 vehicle to estimate its longitudinal velocity, lateral acceleration and yaw rate. The results of identification revealed that the LMN can identify accurately the vehicle’s dynamics. Furthermore, comparison of LMN results and a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network demonstrated the far-better performance of the proposed approach
Empirical Study of Car License Plates Recognition
The number of vehicles on the road has increased drastically in recent years. The license plate is an identity card for a vehicle. It can map to the owner and further information about vehicle. License plate information is useful to help traffic management systems. For example, traffic management systems can check for vehicles moving at speeds not permitted by law and can also be installed in parking areas to se-cure the entrance or exit way for vehicles. License plate recognition algorithms have been proposed by many researchers. License plate recognition requires license plate detection, segmentation, and charac-ters recognition. The algorithm detects the position of a license plate and extracts the characters. Various license plate recognition algorithms have been implemented, and each algorithm has its strengths and weaknesses. In this research, I implement three algorithms for detecting license plates, three algorithms for segmenting license plates, and two algorithms for recognizing license plate characters. I evaluate each of these algorithms on the same two datasets, one from Greece and one from Thailand. For detecting li-cense plates, the best result is obtained by a Haar cascade algorithm. After the best result of license plate detection is obtained, for the segmentation part a Laplacian based method has the highest accuracy. Last, the license plate recognition experiment shows that a neural network has better accuracy than other algo-rithm. I summarize and analyze the overall performance of each method for comparison
Detection of Lying Electrical Vehicles in Charging Coordination Application Using Deep Learning
The simultaneous charging of many electric vehicles (EVs) stresses the
distribution system and may cause grid instability in severe cases. The best
way to avoid this problem is by charging coordination. The idea is that the EVs
should report data (such as state-of-charge (SoC) of the battery) to run a
mechanism to prioritize the charging requests and select the EVs that should
charge during this time slot and defer other requests to future time slots.
However, EVs may lie and send false data to receive high charging priority
illegally. In this paper, we first study this attack to evaluate the gains of
the lying EVs and how their behavior impacts the honest EVs and the performance
of charging coordination mechanism. Our evaluations indicate that lying EVs
have a greater chance to get charged comparing to honest EVs and they degrade
the performance of the charging coordination mechanism. Then, an anomaly based
detector that is using deep neural networks (DNN) is devised to identify the
lying EVs. To do that, we first create an honest dataset for charging
coordination application using real driving traces and information revealed by
EV manufacturers, and then we also propose a number of attacks to create
malicious data. We trained and evaluated two models, which are the multi-layer
perceptron (MLP) and the gated recurrent unit (GRU) using this dataset and the
GRU detector gives better results. Our evaluations indicate that our detector
can detect lying EVs with high accuracy and low false positive rate
Using Machine Learning for Handover Optimization in Vehicular Fog Computing
Smart mobility management would be an important prerequisite for future fog
computing systems. In this research, we propose a learning-based handover
optimization for the Internet of Vehicles that would assist the smooth
transition of device connections and offloaded tasks between fog nodes. To
accomplish this, we make use of machine learning algorithms to learn from
vehicle interactions with fog nodes. Our approach uses a three-layer
feed-forward neural network to predict the correct fog node at a given location
and time with 99.2 % accuracy on a test set. We also implement a dual stacked
recurrent neural network (RNN) with long short-term memory (LSTM) cells capable
of learning the latency, or cost, associated with these service requests. We
create a simulation in JAMScript using a dataset of real-world vehicle
movements to create a dataset to train these networks. We further propose the
use of this predictive system in a smarter request routing mechanism to
minimize the service interruption during handovers between fog nodes and to
anticipate areas of low coverage through a series of experiments and test the
models' performance on a test set
DeepSignals: Predicting Intent of Drivers Through Visual Signals
Detecting the intention of drivers is an essential task in self-driving,
necessary to anticipate sudden events like lane changes and stops. Turn signals
and emergency flashers communicate such intentions, providing seconds of
potentially critical reaction time. In this paper, we propose to detect these
signals in video sequences by using a deep neural network that reasons about
both spatial and temporal information. Our experiments on more than a million
