The Next Generation CATV Tester for Ease of Monitoring and Maintenance in Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Network

    Get PDF
Fiber-to-the Home (FTTH) network system is a broadband network system which can transmit video, data and voice signals. To ensure good signals condition, a CATV tester device is proposed. The CATV tester device is designed to measure CATV signals passing through the optical network unit (ONU) at users’ premises. A single mode optical fiber signal entering the ONU will be obtained by ‘tapping’ method and the signal will then be fed into the CATV tester device through optical cable connection. A wireless technology is applied through the implementation of audio video transmitter and receiver. Then, this tester will display the received signal on the display panel. Although the signal received is accompanied by undesired signals and noises, it will then indicate that the status of main FTTH drop line, the possible damages and action needed that can be easily determined afterwards. By the application of wireless technology, signal transmitted through the fiber optic cable located underground can be easily detected and determined whether it is functioning or no

Designing a Situational Awareness Information Display: Adopting an Affordance-Based Framework to Amplify User Experience in Environmental Interaction Design

User experience remains a crucial consideration when assessing the successfulness of information visualization systems. The theory of affordances provides a robust framework for user experience design. In this article, we demonstrate a design case that employs an affordance-based framework and evaluate the information visualization display design. SolarWheels is an interactive information visualization designed for large display walls in computer network control rooms to help cybersecurity analysts become aware of network status and emerging issues. Given the critical nature of this context, the status and performance of a computer network must be precisely monitored and remedied in real time. In this study, we consider various aspects of affordances in order to amplify the user experience via visualization and interaction design. SolarWheels visualizes the multilayer multidimensional computer network issues with a series of integrated circular visualizations inspired by the metaphor of the solar system. To amplify user interaction and experience, the system provides a three-zone physical interaction that allows multiple users to interact with the system. Users can read details at different levels depending on their distance from the display. An expert evaluation study, based on a four-layer affordance framework, was conducted to assess and improve the interactive visualization design

Implementation and testing of a Neighborhood Office Center (NOC) and integration of the NOC with an administrative correspondence management information system

    Get PDF
The application of telecommunications and telecomputing was investigated as a means of reducing NASA's consumption of natural resources and the proliferation of paper copies of correspondence. The feasibility, operational advantages, and limitations of decentralized (remote) neighborhood offices (NOC) linked through an electronic network are demonstrated. These offices are joined to a management information system for correspondence tracking, and to an administrative office center service based on the use of magnetic medium word processing typewriters which handle the daily typing load. In connection with an augmented teleconference network, a uniform means is provided for creating, storing, and retrieving administrative documents, records, and data, while simultaneously permitting users of the system to track their status. Information will be transferred without using paper - merely through digital electronic communication and display, as a step toward the establishment of an agency-wide electronic mail system

A Monitoring System for the BaBar INFN Computing Cluster

Monitoring large clusters is a challenging problem. It is necessary to observe a large quantity of devices with a reasonably short delay between consecutive observations. The set of monitored devices may include PCs, network switches, tape libraries and other equipments. The monitoring activity should not impact the performances of the system. In this paper we present PerfMC, a monitoring system for large clusters. PerfMC is driven by an XML configuration file, and uses the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) for data collection. SNMP is a standard protocol implemented by many networked equipments, so the tool can be used to monitor a wide range of devices. System administrators can display informations on the status of each device by connecting to a WEB server embedded in PerfMC. The WEB server can produce graphs showing the value of different monitored quantities as a function of time; it can also produce arbitrary XML pages by applying XSL Transformations to an internal XML representation of the cluster's status. XSL Transformations may be used to produce HTML pages which can be displayed by ordinary WEB browsers. PerfMC aims at being relatively easy to configure and operate, and highly efficient. It is currently being used to monitor the Italian Reprocessing farm for the BaBar experiment, which is made of about 200 dual-CPU Linux machines.Comment: Talk from the 2003 Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics (CHEP03), La Jolla, Ca, USA, March 2003, 10 pages, LaTeX, 4 eps figures. GNOSIS: Global Network Operations Status Information System

    Get PDF
Monitoring the global state of a network is a continuing challenge for network operators and users. It has become still harder with increases in scale and heterogeneity. Monitoring requires status information for each node and to construct the global picture at a monitoring point. GNOSIS, the Global Network Operations Status Information System, achieves a global view by careful extraction and presentation of locally available node data. The GNOSIS model improves on the traditional polling model of monitoring schemes by 1.) collecting accurate data 2.) decreasing the granularity with which network applications can detect change in the network and 3.) displaying status information in near real-time. We define the Network Snapshot as the basic unit of information capture and display in GNOSIS. A Network Snapshot is a visualization of locally available state collected during a common time interval. A sequence of these Network Snapshots over time represent the evolution of network state. In this paper, we motivate the need for a network monitoring system that can detect global problems, in spite of both scale and heterogeneity. We present three design criteria, Accuracy, Continuity and Timeliness for a global monitoring system. Finally, we present the GNOSIS architecture and demonstrate how it better detects network problems which are currently of concern. The goal of GNOSIS is to present a stream of consistent, accurate local data in a timely manner

Network, system, and status software enhancements for the autonomously managed electrical power system breadboard. Volume 4: Graphical status display

This volume (4 of 4) contains the description, structured flow charts, prints of the graphical displays, and source code to generate the displays for the AMPS graphical status system. The function of these displays is to present to the manager of the AMPS system a graphical status display with the hot boxes that allow the manager to get more detailed status on selected portions of the AMPS system. The development of the graphical displays is divided into two processes; the creation of the screen images and storage of them in files on the computer, and the running of the status program which uses the screen images

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN A MULTICHANNEL AUDIO ACQUISITION AND AN INFORMATION SYSTEM IN A HEALTH SMART HOME FOR DATA FUSION

    No full text
International audienceThe Health Integrated Smart Home Information System (HIS²) has been developed in the TIMC laboratory for the remote monitoring of the health status of an elderly person during daily life at home. This aims at improving patients' life conditions and at reducing the costs of the long hospitalization. The design of this system is based on a CAN network linked to volumetric, physiological and environment sensors. In addition, a collaboration between the TIMC and the CLIPS laboratories permitted to replace the video camera, not well accepted by the patients by a system based on a multichannel Sound Acquisition. The coupling between both systems will enable to detect if the person is in a situation of distress or not. Both systems locally processe in real time the incoming data and communicate using a CAN network to display the health status. This article describes the system architecture of both systems, practical solutions for their communication and the evaluation results

In modern polyhouse, several sensors are required for its automation. Nowadays soil nutrient problem affects plants growth. In this paper various sensing system have been developed for nutrient testing. This technology combines mapping of PH and electric conductivity for soil nutrient management. In agriculture field water is a main source to increase yield of crop. At present irrigation system is fully automated and controlled by the farmers. The proposed system is controlled and monitored as per soil moisture status. Sensors detect soil moisture, water tank level and depending on that solenoid valve are turned ON/OFF automatically. By using wireless sensor network, all sensors data are stored in database and monitored through local display as well as web service (http client/server)
