    Network reputation-based quality optimization of video delivery in heterogeneous wireless environments

    The mass-market adoption of high-end mobile devices and increasing amount of video traffic has led the mobile operators to adopt various solutions to help them cope with the explosion of mobile broadband data traffic, while ensuring high Quality of Service (QoS) levels to their services. Deploying small-cell base stations within the existing macro-cellular networks and offloading traffic from the large macro-cells to the small cells is seen as a promising solution to increase capacity and improve network performance at low cost. Parallel use of diverse technologies is also employed. The result is a heterogeneous network environment (HetNets), part of the next generation network deployments. In this context, this thesis makes a step forward towards the “Always Best Experience” paradigm, which considers mobile users seamlessly roaming in the HetNets environment. Supporting ubiquitous connectivity and enabling very good quality of rich mobile services anywhere and anytime is highly challenging, mostly due to the heterogeneity of the selection criteria, such as: application requirements (e.g., voice, video, data, etc.); different device types and with various capabilities (e.g., smartphones, netbooks, laptops, etc.); multiple overlapping networks using diverse technologies (e.g., Wireless Local Area Networks (IEEE 802.11), Cellular Networks Long Term Evolution (LTE), etc.) and different user preferences. In fact, the mobile users are facing a complex decision when they need to dynamically select the best value network to connect to in order to get the “Always Best Experience”. This thesis presents three major contributions to solve the problem described above: 1) The Location-based Network Prediction mechanism in heterogeneous wireless networks (LNP) provides a shortlist of best available networks to the mobile user based on his location, history record and routing plan; 2) Reputation-oriented Access Network Selection mechanism (RANS) selects the best reputation network from the available networks for the mobile user based on the best trade-off between QoS, energy consumptions and monetary cost. The network reputation is defined based on previous user-network interaction, and consequent user experience with the network. 3) Network Reputation-based Quality Optimization of Video Delivery in heterogeneous networks (NRQOVD) makes use of a reputation mechanism to enhance the video content quality via multipath delivery or delivery adaptation

    Internet of Underwater Things and Big Marine Data Analytics -- A Comprehensive Survey

    The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is an emerging communication ecosystem developed for connecting underwater objects in maritime and underwater environments. The IoUT technology is intricately linked with intelligent boats and ships, smart shores and oceans, automatic marine transportations, positioning and navigation, underwater exploration, disaster prediction and prevention, as well as with intelligent monitoring and security. The IoUT has an influence at various scales ranging from a small scientific observatory, to a midsized harbor, and to covering global oceanic trade. The network architecture of IoUT is intrinsically heterogeneous and should be sufficiently resilient to operate in harsh environments. This creates major challenges in terms of underwater communications, whilst relying on limited energy resources. Additionally, the volume, velocity, and variety of data produced by sensors, hydrophones, and cameras in IoUT is enormous, giving rise to the concept of Big Marine Data (BMD), which has its own processing challenges. Hence, conventional data processing techniques will falter, and bespoke Machine Learning (ML) solutions have to be employed for automatically learning the specific BMD behavior and features facilitating knowledge extraction and decision support. The motivation of this paper is to comprehensively survey the IoUT, BMD, and their synthesis. It also aims for exploring the nexus of BMD with ML. We set out from underwater data collection and then discuss the family of IoUT data communication techniques with an emphasis on the state-of-the-art research challenges. We then review the suite of ML solutions suitable for BMD handling and analytics.     UAV IoT frameworks views and challenges : towards protecting drones as "things"

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have enormous potential in enabling new applications in various areas, ranging from military, security, medicine, and surveillance to traffic-monitoring applications. Lately, there has been heavy investment in the development of UAVs and multi-UAVs systems that can collaborate and complete missions more efficiently and economically. Emerging technologies such as 4G/5G networks have significant potential on UAVs equipped with cameras, sensors, and GPS receivers in delivering Internet of Things (IoT) services from great heights, creating an airborne domain of the IoT. However, there are many issues to be resolved before the effective use of UAVs can be made, including security, privacy, and management. As such, in this paper we review new UAV application areas enabled by the IoT and 5G technologies, analyze the sensor requirements, and overview solutions for fleet management over aerial-networking, privacy, and security challenges. Finally, we propose a framework that supports and enables these technologies on UAVs. The introduced framework provisions a holistic IoT architecture that enables the protection of UAVs as "flying" things in a collaborative networked environment

A definição de QoS como uma simples verificação de se um nĂł corre risco de falha devido ao nĂșmero de acessos, como faziam, na Ă©poca do levantamento bibliomĂ©trico desta tese, alguns sistemas comerciais, era uma simplificação exagerada para englobar um conceito tĂŁo complexo. Outros trabalhos que dizem lidar com estes conceitos tambĂ©m nĂŁo sĂŁo exatos, em termos matemĂĄticos, e nĂŁo possuem definiçÔes concretas ou com qualidade passĂ­vel de utilização ou replicação, o que torna inviĂĄvel sua aplicação ou mesmo verificação. O foco deste estudo Ă© direcionado Ă  bases de dados distribuĂ­das (BDDs), de maneira que a conceitualização aqui desenvolvida Ă© tambĂ©m compatĂ­vel, ao menos parcialmente, com modelos nĂŁo distribuĂ­dos de BDs. As novas definiçÔes de QoS desenvolvidas sĂŁo utilizadas para se lidar com o conceito correlacionado de qualidade de experiĂȘncia (QoE), em uma abordagem em nĂ­vel de sistema focada em completude de QoS. Mesmo sendo QoE um conceito multidimensional, difĂ­cil de ser mensurado, o foco Ă© mantido em uma abordagem passĂ­vel de mensuramento, de maneira a permitir que sistemas de BDDs possam lidar com autoavaliação. A proposta de autoavaliação surge da necessidade de identificação de problemas passĂ­veis de autocorreção. Tendo-se QoS bem definida, de maneira estatĂ­stica, pode-se fazer anĂĄlise de comportamento e tendĂȘncia comportamental de maneira a se inferir previsĂŁo de estados futuros, o que permite o inĂ­cio de processo de correção antes que se alcance estados inesperados, por predição estatĂ­stica. Sendo o objetivo geral desta tese a definição de mĂ©tricas de QoS e QoE, com foco em BDDs, lidando com a hipĂłtese de que Ă© possĂ­vel se definir QoE estatisticamente com base em QoS, para propĂłsitos de nĂ­vel de sistema. Ambos os conceitos sendo novos para BDDs quando lidando com mĂ©tricas mensurĂĄveis exatas. E com estes conceitos entĂŁo definidos, um modelo de recuperação arquitetural Ă© apresentado e testado para demonstração de resultados quando da utilização das mĂ©tricas definidas para predição comportamental.Abstract : The hitherto lack of quality of service (QoS) congruent conceptualization to databases (DBs) was the factor that drove the initial development of this thesis. To define QoS as a simple verification that if a node is at risk of failure due to memory over-commitment, as did some commercial systems at the time that was made the bibliometric survey of this thesis, it is an oversimplification to encompass such a complex concept. Other studies that quote to deal with this concept are not accurate and lack concrete definitions or quality allowing its use, making infeasible its application or even verification. Being the focus targeted to distributed databases (DDBs), the developed conceptualization is also compatible, at least partially, with models of non-distributed DBs. These newfound QoS settings are then used to handle the correlated concept of quality of experience (QoE) in a system-level approach, focused on QoS completeness. Being QoE a multidimensional concept, hard to be measured, the focus is kept in an approach liable of measurement, in a way to allow DDBs systems to deal with self-evaluation. The idea of self-evaluation arises from the need of identifying problems subject to self-correction. With QoS statistically well-defined, it is possible to analyse behavior and to indetify tendencies in order to predict future states, allowing early correction before the system reaches unexpected states. Being the general objective of this thesis the definition of metrics of QoS and QoE, focused on DDBs, dealing with the hypothesis that it is possible to define QoE statistically based on QoS, for system level purposes. Both these concepts being new to DDBs when dealing with exact measurable metrics. Once defined these concepts, an architectural recovering model is presented and tested to demonstrate the results when using the metrics defined for behavioral prediction

In this keynote, we are going to look at the success stories of smart city-related projects and analyse the factors that led them to success. The development of interactive, reliable and secure systems, both connectionist and symbolic, is often a time-consuming process in which numerous experts are involved. However, intuitive and automated tools like “Deep Intelligence” developed by DCSc and BISITE, facilitate this process. Furthermore, in this talk we will analyse the importance of complementary technologies such as IoT and Blockchain in the development of intelligent systems, as well as the use of edge platforms or fog computing

    This talk presents an efficient cyberphysical platform for the smart management of smart buildings http://www.deepint.net. It is efficient because it facilitates the implementation of data acquisition and data management methods, as well as data representation and dashboard configuration. The platform allows for the use of any type of data source, ranging from the measurements of a multi-functional IoT sensing devices to relational and non-relational databases. It is also smart because it incorporates a complete artificial intelligence suit for data analysis; it includes techniques for data classification, clustering, forecasting, optimization, visualization, etc. It is also compatible with the edge computing concept, allowing for the distribution of intelligence and the use of intelligent sensors. The concept of smart building is evolving and adapting to new applications; the trend to create intelligent neighbourhoods, districts or territories is becoming increasingly popular, as opposed to the previous approach of managing an entire megacity. In this paper, the platform is presented, and its architecture and functionalities are described. Moreover, its operation has been validated in a case study at Salamanca - Ecocasa. This platform could enable smart building to develop adapted knowledge management systems, adapt them to new requirements and to use multiple types of data, and execute efficient computational and artificial intelligence algorithms. The platform optimizes the decisions taken by human experts through explainable artificial intelligence models that obtain data from IoT sensors, databases, the Internet, etc. The global intelligence of the platform could potentially coordinate its decision-making processes with intelligent nodes installed in the edge, which would use the most advanced data processing techniques

    Monte Carlo Method with Heuristic Adjustment for Irregularly Shaped Food Product Volume Measurement

    Volume measurement plays an important role in the production and processing of food products. Various methods have been proposed to measure the volume of food products with irregular shapes based on 3D reconstruction. However, 3D reconstruction comes with a high-priced computational cost. Furthermore, some of the volume measurement methods based on 3D reconstruction have a low accuracy. Another method for measuring volume of objects uses Monte Carlo method. Monte Carlo method performs volume measurements using random points. Monte Carlo method only requires information regarding whether random points fall inside or outside an object and does not require a 3D reconstruction. This paper proposes volume measurement using a computer vision system for irregularly shaped food products without 3D reconstruction based on Monte Carlo method with heuristic adjustment. Five images of food product were captured using five cameras and processed to produce binary images. Monte Carlo integration with heuristic adjustment was performed to measure the volume based on the information extracted from binary images. The experimental results show that the proposed method provided high accuracy and precision compared to the water displacement method. In addition, the proposed method is more accurate and faster than the space carving method
