Engineered Connective Tissue Scar Model for Regenerative Medicine Applications
Axonal extension through the site of a peripheral neural degenerative injury is severely limited by the formation of a mature scar. Presently, there are few clinically relevant and cost-effective methods for testing regenerative therapies in mature peripheral neuronal scars. This project aims to design a proof-of-concept cellular connective tissue scar model to evaluate the efficacy of neuroregenerative therapies. To accomplish this, a small-diameter 3D collagen cylinder seeded with NIH-3T3 fibroblasts was prototyped to favor collagen fiber alignment. The tissue was supplemented with ascorbic acid to induce collagen production, simulating an in-vivo scar environment
