    Applications of satellite technology to broadband ISDN networks

    Two satellite architectures for delivering broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) service are evaluated. The first is assumed integral to an existing terrestrial network, and provides complementary services such as interconnects to remote nodes as well as high-rate multicast and broadcast service. The interconnects are at a 155 Mbs rate and are shown as being met with a nonregenerative multibeam satellite having 10-1.5 degree spots. The second satellite architecture focuses on providing private B-ISDN networks as well as acting as a gateway to the public network. This is conceived as being provided by a regenerative multibeam satellite with on-board ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) processing payload. With up to 800 Mbs offered, higher satellite EIRP is required. This is accomplished with 12-0.4 degree hopping beams, covering a total of 110 dwell positions. It is estimated the space segment capital cost for architecture one would be about 190Mwhereasthesecondarchitecturewouldbeabout190M whereas the second architecture would be about 250M. The net user cost is given for a variety of scenarios, but the cost for 155 Mbs services is shown to be about $15-22/minute for 25 percent system utilization

    Onboard baseband processing architectures for future satellite broadband integrated services digital networks (B-ISDN's) are addressed. To assess the feasibility of implementing satellite B-ISDN services, critical design issues, such as B-ISDN traffic characteristics, transmission link design, and a trade-off between onboard circuit and fast packet switching, are analyzed. Examples of the two types of switching mechanisms and potential onboard network control functions are presented. A sample network architecture is also included to illustrate a potential onboard processing system

    Efficient redundancy in wired and wireless S2A architectures for NCS

    This thesis focuses on the integration of wired and wireless nodes running on top of Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi respectively in Networked Control Systems. Such a networked control system investigated in this work consists of two wireless sensors, two wireless actuators, 14 wired sensors, two wired actuators and one wired supervisor. The architecture is based on Sensor-To-Actuator model. It is revealed through OMNeT++ simulations that the wired and wireless packet end-to-end delays in the developed model satisfy system requirements with no packet loss. Moreover, wired, wireless and mixed interferences are studied and quantified. The amount of interference that the model can withstand is determined. All results are subjected to a 95% confidence analysis. Additionally, the thesis focuses on reliability in the design of networked control systems that is becoming greatly important. Fault-tolerance is often used to increase system reliability. In this work, Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) and Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) are both applied to a Sensor-to-Actuator architecture with 16 sensors, four Actuators and one Supervisor. Two of the 16 sensors as well as two of the four actuators are wireless while the rest of the nodes are wired. It is first shown that this NCS succeeds in meeting all control system requirements (zero packet loss and bounded end-to-end delay). Reliability models are then developed to help designers choose the appropriate mix of fault-tolerant techniques in order to maximize lifetime while at the same time minimizing the extra cost due to the added redundancy

    On the Reliability Assessment of Artificial Neural Networks Running on AI-Oriented MPSoCs

    Nowadays, the usage of electronic devices running artificial neural networks (ANNs)-based applications is spreading in our everyday life. Due to their outstanding computational capabilities, ANNs have become appealing solutions for safety-critical systems as well. Frequently, they are considered intrinsically robust and fault tolerant for being brain-inspired and redundant computing models. However, when ANNs are deployed on resource-constrained hardware devices, single physical faults may compromise the activity of multiple neurons. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the reliability of the entire neural computing system, including both the software and the hardware components. This article systematically addresses reliability concerns for ANNs running on multiprocessor system-on-a-chips (MPSoCs). It presents a methodology to assign resilience scores to individual neurons and, based on that, schedule the workload of an ANN on the target MPSoC so that critical neurons are neatly distributed among the available processing elements. This reliability-oriented methodology exploits an integer linear programming solver to find the optimal solution. Experimental results are given for three different convolutional neural networks trained on MNIST, SVHN, and CIFAR-10. We carried out a comprehensive assessment on an open-source artificial intelligence-based RISC-V MPSoC. The results show the reliability improvements of the proposed methodology against the traditional scheduling

    Hierarchical fault tolerance in wireless networked control systems

    Wireless Networked Control Systems (WNCS) have recently emerged as a replacement for wired control networks. Wireless networked control systems are more suitable for environments that require higher flexibility and robustness. In previous literature a wireless manufacturing line was proposed. The work-cells communication was through IEEE 802.11 technologies and a switched Ethernet backbone. This thesis is aiming to improve the current solution by adding a supervisor to the existing system. The supervisor could be either in passive or active mode. Passive supervisor would intervene when all controllers in the network fail, while active supervisor would act once any controller on the line fail. The system was simulated using OPNET software with 95% confidence analysis. The ability of the system to withstand external interference was assessed through adding a single band jammer to the OPNET simulation. The system was able to hold up to 8KB interfering file sent from a single band jammer affecting the full Wi-Fi spectrum. All results were subjected to a 95% confidence analysis The performability of passive and active supervisor systems was compared. A Markov model of both systems was built. It was shown that by time, the performability of a passive supervisor system is enhanced while that of an active supervisor system degraded. However, the active supervisor showed a better performability in all cases

    Dual protocol performance using WiFi and ZigBee for industrial WLAN

    The purpose of this thesis is to study the performance of a WNCS based on utilizing IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.11 in meeting industrial requirements as well as the extent of improvement on the network level in terms of latency and interference tolerance when using the two different protocols, namely WiFi and ZigBee, in parallel. The study evaluates the optimum performance of WNCS that utilizes only IEEE 802.15.4 protocol (which ZigBee is based on) without modifications as an alternative that is low cost and low power compared to other wireless technologies. The study also evaluates the optimum performance of WNCS that utilizes only the IEEE 802.11 protocol (WiFi) without modifications as a high bit network. OMNeT++ simulations are used to measure the end-to-end delay and packet loss from the sensors to the controller and from the controller to the actuators. It is demonstrated that the measured delay of the proposed WNCS including all types of transmission, encapsulation, de-capsulation, queuing and propagation, meet real-time control network requirements while guaranteeing correct packet reception with no packet loss. Moreover, it is shown that the demonstrated performance of the proposed WNCS operating redundantly on both networks in parallel is significantly superior to a WNCS operating on either a totally wireless ZigBee or WiFi network individually in terms of measured delay and interference tolerance. This proposed WNCS demonstrates the combined advantages of both the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol (which ZigBee is based on) without modifications being low cost and low power compared to other wireless technologies as well the advantages of the IEEE 802.11 protocol (WiFi) being increased bit rate and higher immunity to interference.     Fault tolerance in WBAN applications

    One of the most promising applications of IoT is Wireless Body Area Net-works (WBANs) in medical applications. They allow physiological signals monitoring of patients without the presence of nearby medical personnel. Furthermore, WBANs enable feedback action to be taken either periodically or event-based following the Networked Control Systems (NCSs) techniques. This thesis first presents the architecture of a fault tolerant WBAN. Sensors data are sent over two redundant paths to be processed, analyzed and monitored. The two main communication protocols utilized in this system are Low power Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11n) and Long Term Evolution (LTE). Riverbed Modeler is used to study the system’s behavior. Simulation results are collected with 95% confidence analysis on 33 runs on different initial seeds. It is proven that the system is fully operational. It is then shown that the system can withstand interference and system’s performance is quantified. Results indicate that the system succeeds in meeting all required control criteria in the presence of two different interference models. The second contribution of this thesis is the design of an FPGA-based smart band for health monitoring applications in WBANs. This FPGA-based smart band has a softcore processor and its allocated SRAM block as well as auxiliary modules. A novel scheme for full initial configuration and Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration through the WLAN network is integrated into this design. Fault tolerance techniques are used to mitigate transient faults such as Single Event Upsets (SEUs) and Multiple Event Upsets (MEUs). The system is studied in a normal environment as well as in a harsh environment. System availability is then obtained using Markov Models and a case study is presented

    Future benefits and applications of intelligent on-board processing to VSAT services

    The trends and roles of VSAT services in the year 2010 time frame are examined based on an overall network and service model for that period. An estimate of the VSAT traffic is then made and the service and general network requirements are identified. In order to accommodate these traffic needs, four satellite VSAT architectures based on the use of fixed or scanning multibeam antennas in conjunction with IF switching or onboard regeneration and baseband processing are suggested. The performance of each of these architectures is assessed and the key enabling technologies are identified
